It’s been dawning on me that many people in fandom just have different definitions for what shipping is. And that’s a big reason it causes friction.
When I say different definitions I mean that the divide between antis and darkshippers is largely based on antis assuming that the shippers think of their abusive ships as desirable in real life. When that really is the opposite of the point for most of them.
When someone reads a horror novel, they can be fans of the killer for being horrifying. Maybe they are even sexually attracted to the killer because of sadism or masochism. And because it’s a fictional story, that’s okay. That person isn’t a threat to real life people if they’ve never shown abusive or violent tendencies beyond their taste in fiction. And they aren’t a threat to themselves either if they don’t pursue violent people in real life.
We often don’t question the appeal of a fictional man with a knife covered in blood the same way we question the appeal of abusive ships, but it comes from the same morbid fascination and psychological triggers. And anyway, it just makes a story more engaging when there’s conflict and things get scary.
It's time to settle this once and for all.

The reason why darkshipping is inherently harmful because even if you know that the topics you’re reading is bad, it desensitises and normalises it to you which is incredibly dangerous.
At first you know that this is bad but if you tell yourself you’re just coping, eventually you stop seeing those things as bad. Even if you don’t go around hurting people it makes you more vulnerable to be hurt yourself because you don’t know what a healthy relationship is anymore.
And at the end of the day, there is a difference between safely exploring your trauma through fiction and glorifying and romanticising forms of abuse.
