I was arguing with an anti online and as usual when you disagree with them they pull out the typical thought terminating cliché; 'ok pedo' or 'Epstein something something'. I informed them that I was asexual and therefore incapable of meeting the diagnostic criteria for Pedophilia, and they replied with something around the lines of 'excuses excuses, I know you're a pedo'.
Someone else came to my defense, but the antis' thought process summarized to; because you (I) like shota, I am a pedophile. (I'm studying abnormal psychology btw, so they are arguing with me and I've got my literal psychology textbook open lol) It's a personal pet peeve of mine that people are completely misinformed about what paraphilias are. (For those who don't know, paraphilias are an atypical sexual interest. And there's a difference between a paraphilia and a paraphilic disorder as well.)
What makes pedophilia a paraphilia isn't attraction to 'things that look like children' or 'childlike traits'; it's the fact that children can't consent to a relationship with an adult because of their mental developmental stage. And in fact, being in an adult relationship will detrimentally harm them psychologically.
What makes pedophilia atypical is the harm that comes (or may come) from the dynamic between a real adult and a real child. That's why it's not pedophilia for kids to be attracted to other kids, or older teens to sleep with other older teens. They are developmentally on (approximately) the same stage physiologically even if technically they are attracted to the so-called 'child-like traits'.
This is also why being attracted to: big eyes, flat or small chests, short height, blond hair, braces, skinny bodies, certain hairstyles and clothing, or other 'childlike characteristics', isn't actually pedophilia. You can like and be attracted to someone with small tits and short height; as long as there isn't
2 the non-consensual harm that comes from the dynamic of an adults sexual relationship with that child.
Without those two things it doesn't qualify as pedophilia.
Depending on the person, kodacon may be a paraphilia, but it maps onto objects and doesn't typically involve non-consensual acts.
Basically a pedophile can be a kodacon but most kodacon's are not pedophiles. So tying this back to the beginning; No, me being a shotacon doesn't make me (or you) a pedophile :D
