BUT. if I said derek then I would have to take qui gon to the airport, and I, as someone who brings along all the documents in a dedicated file folder and has a strict itinerary, would fully scream at qui gon when we finally leave an hour late, especially when he hands me a lit joint to smoke "so I'll calm down" WHILE I'm driving. so i'd help qui gon move. because carrying 145034290895 plants is better than the alternative

I ship it! (lol duh)

What made you ship it: Like a lot of people, five minutes of the Mandalorian made me get into Din/Luke and reawakened my massive Star Wars love (I grew up on the original trilogy and those damn Ewok movies), and then tumblr started randomly showing me things from that tag, so I ran across a story that I really liked, and I ended up checking out the author’s AO3 account. I ended up reading a Bobadinluke story she was also writing, and then joined her newly created discord server on a whim, and one thing just led to another. Plus, like, Tem’s voice.

What are your favorite things about the ship? I like how it‘s three dudes who all have very weird and super intense father/parent issues, and yet all of them manage to have unique father/parent issues, which makes it all the more interesting when those three collide. I also like how it includes a lot of bonus tropes in addition to the daddy issues. Enemies to lovers! Strangers to lovers! Reluctant allies! Age difference! Size difference! Loaded history! Found family! It gives you the opportunity for big ol’ emotional exchanges, and also characters fucking nasty. I like a wide spectrum like that.

I also like the parallels that accompany all three characters, not just in terms of losing family at an early age and how that fundamentally changes their life direction, but also in terms of being thrust into a role or identity that they didn’t necessarily ask for or know how to handle. I like how each of them struggles with how to grow or develop a culture or place that’s had a lot of history. I like how their three personalities would fit (and clash) and how each of them has strengths and weaknesses that the other two supplement or draw upon.

Also as mentioned, I was into SW from an early age, so Luke is one of the OG members of my Short Blond Over Powered Twink That I Enjoy Seeing Get Wrecked group. Why settle for watching him get wrecked by one Mando when I can have two, yknow.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I think fandom in general tends to target Han as having the most issues with Luke shacking up with Din and Boba, or use him as the comic relief, but I think it would actually be Leia who’d have the hardest time giving approval or who would dig her heels in on accepting it. I don’t think Han would necessarily like it, but I think Han’s more likely to be pragmatic about it.

Leia, on the other hand-- I don’t really see her easily getting over or forgiving Boba for working for Vader, hunting Luke, turning Han over to Jabba, and standing by and witnessing her captivity and humiliation at Jabba’s. (In fact, I think the bit in Tales of the Bounty Hunters where she and Boba have a hilariously hateful little sleepover together and discuss their respective moral codes doesn’t mean she’d respect him; I think if anything, it would raise her contempt.) So, scenarios or set ups where Leia has no problem with Boba or is dismissive of Han’s feelings about him tend to make me skeptical. Plus, like, the optics of being a senator and trying not to let your career be sunk from your dumbass twin who is also the last Jedi having relationships with a crime lord and the king of a bunch of militant warriors going stir-crazy.

you know what I wanted sexy negotiations for this, and all I got is “if sw was an action flick” dialogue (featuring some competence kink if you squint really hard).

Din lowers his scope, exhaling in frustration. “Ok. We’ll go from up top. See if we can’t find another way in.”

“The cliff-side windows?” Boba snorts, disproving. “Too noisy. Might as well just blast the doors.”

“We don’t know how many—”

“Eleven,” Luke chimes in, helpful.

“Alright, so eleven smugglers who know we’re coming and will have all their firepower concentrated on the door if we slice it open. Dozens more will come crawling out from underground when they hear the commotion.”

“Not if we blast it hard enough,” Boba grumbles. “We could bring the roof down on them. Bit messier but saves time.”

“If we can’t control the collapse, we have no guarantee there won’t be innocent casualties.”

“Well why don’t you come up with a better plan then, Mand’alor?”

“I did. We find another way in.”

“And I said, they’ll hear us coming before we can even get one shot in. Better to go in blasters blazing.”

“We don’t have enough firepower to keep them blazing until we can get out of here with the targets secured.”

“Isn’t that why we brought a Jedi? Have him hold them back until we’re out.”

“It’s too risky.”

“What’s risky is staying here for much longer without doing anything.”

“Then let’s move up top and get this over with—”

A loud clank beyond the doors and the muffled sounds of blaster-fire interrupt their argument, but it lasts only for a few seconds before falling silent. The durasteel then slides apart, and Din and Boba both lift their blasters only to lower them again when the cloaked form of their Jedi emerges from the sparks and smoke, calm and triumphant—an easy smile on his face, but eyes glittering with the exertion of combat and something like mischief.

(And because this isn’t the first time, neither of them is really all that surprised.)

“I hope you don’t mind if I cut your negotiations short, but I just finished my own,” Luke quips, clipping his lightsaber back onto his belt. “You were both right, by the way. The windows were a good call. And the two of you would have been too noisy.”

I asked a few writers ( @willowcrowned, @shey-elizabeth, @tessiete) and also took a crack at answering myself. The post got a little long, but I hope you’ll find it as interesting as I did to see how different writers engage with what they are reading.... DarkIsRising:​

I read a LOT of fanfic in a ton of different fandoms that I’d never write in, constantly looking for the very best writing that fandom has to offer. I’m always asking for recs from people, trying to find the writing that makes my brain purr. From there it’s a process of getting lost in a new writer’s way of developing story and character, falling in love with how they did what they did, and then rereading to see if I can find out why those words in that order made my mind melt or my heart speed up or my skin get that sickly dread feeling that comes when the angst is high and hitting just right. What happens next depends on my mood.

Dark! This is such a good question!

Ok two great things I watched recently that were VERY different from each other and I loved both:

1. Kiki’s Delivery Service- I had somehow never seen this before and decided to check it out recently on a night when the Husband had fallen asleep on the couch and I didn’t have to account for what would interest him. Like all Ghibli movies it was visually beautiful and the story was lovely. I also loved that the kid protagonist went off to have adventures on her own without her parents dying (wrote about that here). My kid is VERY conflict averse and can’t watch most movies but I think I’m going to try this one with her.

2. Severance- Ok, complete opposite end of the spectrum. This show was dark and twisty and So Freakin Weird. I finished it weeks ago and I can’t stop thinking about it. I haven’t watched something that was as much of a wild ride for my brain in a while. Real life is pretty stressful so I gravitate towards media that is fun or comforting and this was not even slightly either of those things but it was fantastic brain food and I’m so glad I watched it. I highly highly recommend this show.

I’m not sure that I have a “worst” but we recently started watching Stargate SG-1 and 4 episodes in I’m struggling with it a bit. The first season aired in 1997 and … hoo boy that was a while ago. The gender dynamics in particular feel super dated. Like the show has this “strong female character” but in the third episode they go to a world where women are completely subjugated in part to show how much of a “strong female character” the team member is. Part of it is probably the fact that we’re watching the first episodes of a show that hasn’t quite found it’s footing at this point in the series, but the writing feels so clunky. I do really like the character of Teal’c and I’m giving it a few more episodes to reel me in but the jury is still out for me.

F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

most recently, from Cords of Honour: 

“I am not sure I understand you,” Obi-Wan said at last. “Surely you do not wish to play loyal subject to the man who killed so many of your people, perhaps even your family.”

“And I suppose your father would rather your people die than bend the knee to a more skilled warrior?”

Obi-Wan tilted his head. “That is the general idea, yes. I am intrigued by the distinction you are making—that this is my father’s wish and not my own.”

“You didn’t strike me as the sort to accept death,” Qui-Gon said with a shrug. “Death rather than defeat… that is not the mind of a man who stays to the very last to allow his wounded to get away.”

“I would not disrespect those loyal to me by throwing their lives away,” Obi-Wan said, a touch sharply.

“Then a distinction between you and your father is not ill-placed,” Qui-Gon noted.

Obi-Wan stood up so sharply the chair clattered to the floor beside him.

He was a sight to behold, breathing fast like he’d been running, eyes flashing with anger. “I marvel,” Obi-Wan said, voice level and even quiet, “at how elegant and economical that was. You pay me a compliment and insult my parentage in a single phrase.”

That last line 😆 it came out of the blue and I love it so much. This scene overall is for Qui and Obi to get to know each other, or for Obi-Wan to get to know his captor on a more intimate level than they’ve had, laying the grounds for sympathy. 

(I am actually extremely proud of most of the dialogue in Sound the Abyss, because it drove the fic on. the balcony scene was key to the fic’s existence, but the awkward first interaction even more so. I love incomplete resolutions, ones where something is unlocked, but not everything.) 

R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?

My goodness, yes. I am an absolute magpie and everybody has a shiny. This is not really an answer, but I promise to finish my fic rec post soon.

There are ppl who build worlds out of what Star Wars gave us and I sit there starry eyed picking out every little thing they pulled into an au or ar, no matter how far it is from original canon sw. there are ppl who create a certain tone in their writing that I am still trying to figure out how to mimic, with little to no success that I can see. I love seeing ppl balance contrasts like gut-wrenching and soft.

I would say a major influence in the beginning was Oscar Wilde with his exceptionally descriptive sentences. Le Guin is unparalleled, un-mimickable. Bradbury appears sometimes 😊 god I love the Martian Chronicles.
