Canyon Moon analysis
So recently I was listening to canyon moon and came up with this;Ā
My belief is that Harry tells the story of a trip he has to take for work. A time he has to spend away from Louis while he is doing different things necessary for his career. To cope with missing him, he thinks about the time spent together in thisĀ āCanyon Moonā which we donāt know if it is a specific place or an idea but itās the happy thought that helps him while heās away.Ā
On to the lyrics:Ā
āYou gotta see it to believe it Sky never looked so blue So hard to leave it That's what I always doāĀ
Here I have the weird theory that heās talking about the sky back home. Heās talking about England and how the sky is finally blue (which doesnāt usually happen in the UK) and how itās unbelievable (āgotta see it to believe itā) and how he feels guilty about leaving (āThatās what I always doā) even though it is difficult for him to leave the UK and what it represents = home = Louis.Ā
āSo I keep thinking back to A time under the canyon moonā
So to cope with the feeling of leaving Louis behind and missing him, he thinks about the time they spent together under the canyon moon.Ā
The world's happy waiting Doors yellow, broken, blue I heard Jenny saying "Go get the kids from school"
Harry isĀ now in LA, heās working on some music. Kid Harpoonās wife is called Jenny so we can interpret that he is spending time with him, working on some music while being exposed to another relationship; to two people who love each other. He is a witness to the domesticity of a friendās relationship.Ā
And I keep thinking back to A time under the canyon moon I'll be gone too long from you And that exposure to a relationship makes him miss his own relationship; makes him go back to his happy place and also be saddened by the fact that there is still a long while to go before he can go back to his own partner (āIāll be gone too long from youā).Ā
Staring at the ceiling Two weeks and I'll be home Carry the feeling Through Paris, all through Rome
Now thereās only two week left of this distance, this trip. He is closer to going back home and that hope, that feeling is what carries him through his travels.Ā
And I'm still thinking back to A time under the canyon moon
I'm going, oh, I'm going I'm going, oh, I'm going I'm going, oh, I'm going home
I'm going, oh, I'm going I'm going, oh, I'm going I'm going, oh, I'm going home
He is clearly excited by the prospect of going home soon and that is the mantra that keeps him motivated and strong through the final two weeks.Ā
Quick pause in conversation She plays songs I've never heard An old lover's hippie music Pretends not to know the words I do think in this paragraph he is talking about Camille. However, I donāt think it makes sense if it was about a real relationship with Camille. Here, he is talking about spending time with her; they have to go out and be seen together, talk and get to know each other. However, the conversation doesnāt flow as easily (āQuick pause in conversationā) and they don't really have a lot in common (āPlays songs Iāve never heardā).Ā
And I keep thinking back to A time under the canyon moon I'll be gone too long from you
So, while he is spending time with Camille, doing his job, he is thinkingĀ back to that happy place; to Louis. And hereās where it wouldnāt make sense if it was about a real relationship between him and Camille; Why would he beĀ thinking about a time spentĀ together with his lover, wishing to go back home, to go back to that place, when he is already spending time with his lover? He has to be talking about a different person when heĀ talksĀ about the canyon moon for it to make sense. Ā It wouldn't make sense for him to be sad about beingĀ āgone fromā his loved one if he is already with them.Ā
I'm going, oh, I'm going I'm going, oh, I'm going I'm going, oh, I'm going home I'm going, oh, I'm going I'm going, oh, I'm going I'm going, oh, I'm going home I'm going, oh, I'm going I'm going, oh, I'm going I'm going, oh, I'm going home (hey)
And again, the idea of going home prevails, it is his mantra, he repeats it all throughout the song, whenever he is missing his happy place and the person he shares it with.Ā Even without considering how important the concept ofĀ āhomeā has been to Larry and both of their discographies, it is significant because of the mining within the song.Ā
