The Dark Aether had a habit of throwing people across realities—forcing them to witness things no human mind was meant to endure. 

Weaver was seconded away from threatening bodily harm when the radio cracked to life—static, gunfire, shouting. 

“Zombies are moving in massive herds,” Dempsey barked. “Way more aggressive than usual. We need backup—now.”

“This is the culprit.” 

Dempsey dragged the girl forward—no older than twenty-one. Maya’s karambit hovered at her throat, the sharp tip pressing just enough to promise damage. 

Richtofen nearly bounced on his heels. 

“Such a delicate area, Maya,” he said brightly. “The larynx. The trachea. An artery runs right there.” 

Somehow the sanest among them, Weaver finally looked at the so-called culprit. 

“Eden.” 

The word stole the rest of his voice. 

He shoved Dempsey and Maya aside. “She’s my kid. Back off.” 

The baby-faced pre-teen he used to rough up with noogies was gone. 

The girl staring back at him wore his stare—cold, guarded, carved by hardship. The same stoic expression he’d earned the hard way. 

Eden pushed him away. Too close. 

No thank you. No relief. 

She didn’t seem to care that a zombie had nearly torn her apart earlier. Blood—dark and drying—was smeared across her face, none of it slowing her breathing. 

Whatever the Dark Aether had done to her, it hadn’t left her fragile. 

“A new experiment!” 

Richtofen clapped and stepped closer, peering at Eden with open fascination. He reached out, fingers hovering near the drying blood on her face. 

Smack. 

His hand snapped back. 

Richtofen stared at her, genuinely offended. “You dare strike me?” 

“My fourth wife used to smack me,” Nikolai slurred, cutting in. “She dead now.” He took another pull from his flask. 

Richtofen scowled at him. 

“I smack you—” Eden started, then stopped. 

Her eyes dropped to the gold medals on Richtofen’s chest. 

She stepped back instantly, pressing in beside Weaver. 

Disgust crossed her face. “Gross. I’m not talking to a Nazi.” 

She stayed close to her father—not afraid, just repulsed. 

Richtofen laughed softly. 

“Not a pleasant experiment,” he said, gesturing toward her as if she weren’t standing there. “But perfect all the same.” 

His eyes gleamed with calculation. 

“Conflict creates the illusion of choice,” he continued calmly. “And illusions…” 

 A smile crept across his face. 

 “They are remarkably easy to break.”
