He couldn’t find the words for it when he was kneeling in the mud of Normandy, head tilted up to watch the tracers find their targets with no radio, no weapon, and no allies. He especially couldn’t in Holland, his hands and mind fully occupied by his assigned task and the disaster of it all. Even now, sitting in a frozen foxhole and watching smoke drift up from the defunct hunk of explosives and metal lodged in its side, he couldn’t describe what it was. But he knew whatever internal battle it was he was fighting until now, he’d lost.
