Boundaries
Fic prompt: Alex struggling with her over protectiveness during Kelly's first (or several) outing(s) as Guardian - Requested by @dtowngurl4488

“I’ve been calling and texting you.”
Alex walked through the door of the apartment relieved to find that her girlfriend was home. Today was the team’s first mission with Guardian fighting alongside them. She held her own but wasn’t completely satisfied with how things had gone. When they met back at the tower to debrief, she had very little to say, still taking it all in. As soon as they wrapped up, she snuck away without anyone noticing. Hence, the slew of unread texts and missed calls on her phone.
Kelly was sitting on the couch, balled up in the corner with a blanket. Her head was resting on the arm of the chair as she mindlessly watched the news coverage from the scene she’d left hours ago.
When Alex didn’t get a response to her comment she came over and sat on the opposite end of the couch. It was clear that Kelly was upset. She just wasn’t sure why, so she tested the waters.
“You kicked ass today.”
Again, nothing. She just stared blankly ahead.
“Kelly, what’s going on?” Alex asked, raising her voice slightly as she grabbed the remote and paused the tv.
They sat there in silence and Alex waited patiently to be acknowledged, but once again, she was given nothing. Not even a glance.
“Babe, please. You have to give me something. Are you ok? Was today too much? Did I do something wro-”
“Alex!” Kelly finally broke, turning her head and looking at her girlfriend for the first time since she’d walked through the door. Not meaning to sound so sharp, she took a deep breath and lowered her tone. “I just need space. Please.”
Deep down Alex wanted to do the exact opposite. She wanted to pull Kelly into her arms and get to the bottom of whatever was bothering her. But she respected her request and fought the urge to say another word, giving Kelly the space she’d asked for. After grabbing a bite to eat and taking a shower, Alex got in bed.
Meanwhile, Kelly didn’t move from her spot on the couch. Alex laid down with zero intention of falling asleep until her other half was laying next to her. Even if she wanted to, her thoughts weren’t going to let her fall asleep. The psychologist never let them go to bed angry or with unresolved issues. This had led them to a handful of sleepless nights in the time they’d been dating but it was always worth it.
It was one in the morning before Kelly finally got in bed that night. She pulled back the covers and sat with her back against the headboard. It was only a matter of seconds before Alex did the same.
The darker woman let out a deep sigh before starting the conversation. “You and I need to set some boundaries.”
“Okay…”
“Alex, I love you. And I love that we get to work together. But we can’t do this… I can’t be a vigilante if you’re going to babysit me every time I g-”
“Babysit you? Kelly, I was protecting you!”
“I would not be out there fighting alongside you if I needed protecting! You were more concerned about me than the mission we were sent there to do. Civilians almost got seriously hurt today because you chose to help me over them.”
“Ah. Ok,” Alex bit back, taking the passive aggressive route. “So I was just supposed to let a car fall on top of you?”
“Of course not. You were supposed to let me do my job so that you could do yours. Your job is not to protect me. Your job is to protect our city.”
“I know that! But I refuse to let you get hurt on my watch. Or even worse. I can’t lose you, Kelly!”
“You aren’t going to lose me, Alex. I know I’m new to this whole superhero thing but I can handle myself. I’m no stranger to combat.” The brunette paused to take a deep breath.
The frustration was evident in both of their tones and she didn’t want this to escalate into something bigger. They sat in silence for a minute before Kelly spoke up again.
“Did you forget who’s been training me for the past three months?”
Kelly waited for a response but Alex continued to look down and fidget with her hands.
“Would you have let me suit up today if I wasn’t ready?”
“Whether or not you suit up and join the fight is not up to m-”
“Would you have let me?”
“No,” the redhead mumbled.
“Exactly. I need you to remember that the next time you’re worried I might end up trapped under a car. I know how much you love me and want to keep me safe, but you have to turn that off when duty calls.”
Alex looked up and nodded apologetically. “Boundaries.”
“Yes, boundaries,” Kelly repeated. “I can't be your girlfriend when we’re on the field.”
“I hate the way that sounds.”
“I only meant it metaphorically.”
“Yeah, I know. I get it. And you’re right.”
The room filled with silence again, but Kelly knew Alex had more to say, so she waited.
“I overstepped today and I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have interfered like that. It was never my intention to make you feel like you couldn’t handle yourself out there. You’d think having Supergirl for a sister I’d know how to set my feelings aside, but with you- I don’t know. It’s just… different. But I promise I will work on it. I’ll do better.”
“That’s all I can ask for.”
Alex pulled Kelly into her arms and kissed her forehead. “Don’t be afraid to give me a good knock on the head with your shield the next time I get in your way.”
The darker woman let out a soft laugh. Alex’s favorite sound. “There won’t be any need for that.”
“In all seriousness though, you really did kick ass today.”
“You think so?”
It wasn’t lost on Alex the amount of doubt behind that question. And if it wasn’t clear enough by the sound of Kelly’s voice, it was written all over her face. The psychologist always gave so much of herself to others, making sure they knew they were enough, but she often forgot to do that for herself. It didn’t help that since her debut, she’s had to deal with constant comparison to the “original” guardian.
“I absolutely think so. Did you see the way those kids looked at you when we showed up to the scene today? And the little girl with the braids? She got to see a real life superhero that looked just like her. That was priceless.”
“She looked at me like I hung the moon.” Kelly started to tear up just thinking about it. “If I ever feel like quitting I will remember that moment.”
Alex smiled, lifting her girlfriend’s chin. “I love you. And I’m so fucking proud of you.”
Kelly responded by leaning in for a long, slow kiss. A tear fell down her cheek as the emotions she was holding in earlier resurfaced.
“Ditto.”
