On April 5th, 2005 Tom Mauser, the father of Daniel Mauser, was arrested outside of the NRA headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia for trespassing. He made the trek to hand deliver a letter he wrote that expressed his concerns about a bill the NRA was promoting that would grant immunity to the gun industry from civil lawsuits. When employees refused to talk, Mauser began to protest by marching on the NRA’s driveway as he shouted out, “Why can’t you answer my letter?”
Soon, the authorities were called in. He was told that he needed to take the protest off private property and continue on the sidewalk, which was considered to be a public area. Mauser refused, stating that the NRA would surely not listen if he backed own. He was then arrested for trespassing.
The sign in Tom Mauser’s hands is the same one he held during a protest for a NRA convention. That convention took places eleven days after his son was shot and killed during the Columbine school shooting. After the arrest, Mauser and a friend returned to the NRA’s headquarters to retrieve the sign. The officer at the scene had left it sitting outside of the building, but what happened to it after that is unknown.
