âThe discovery of large gas planets within the inner regions of other solar systems has prompted a whole new set of questions. If these giant planets formed beyond the ice line, then migrated inward, could Jupiter have followed a similar path?âÂ
Having just begun to doze off, Danny snaps his attention back to the glowing screen before him, dragging his hand down his face to further wake himself. âTo test this idea, scientists used a supercomputer to reproduce the early evolution of our solar system.â How much did I miss-? I remember a good 10 or 15 minutes of the beginning, and none of this makes sense, so I must be almost finished, right?Â
Danny pauses the documentary, and his mouth falls open as he can do nothing but stare at the time stamp with glassy eyes. 22 fucking minutes?? Out of 45? Quickly clicking away from the film, Danny makes a mental note to finish it the next morning, only hoping that the daylight would help him sit through the rest of it without falling asleep. Checking the time, he begins scrolling the top-rated movies, knowing that his sleepiness had only been caused by the film. Â
It was stupid that he was even trying to watch it, really. Sam had mentioned that he found it âextremely interestingâ in conversation, and when Danny replied that heâd have to check it out sometime, the other man's entire face had lit up. Danny found it adorable how enthusiastic his boyfriend was when talking about nerdy space stuff, but with their relationship still in its honeymoon phase, he hadnât considered that he was a different type of space nerd than Sam. Â
Sure, he could sit through a Star Wars marathonâthe prequels, Solo, Rogue One, the originals, AND the sequels (strictly in that order)âlike it was nothing. But 45 minutes of some proper British dude talking about Jupiter? Count him out.
Feeling his phone vibrate against the couchâs worn upholstery, Danny checks it to find a singular text from Austin. âYou home?âÂ
âYeah, whatâs up?â Quickly typing out his response and sending it, Danny watches the three little dots at the top, left side of his keyboard disappear and reappear, and his worry only grows with each passing second. After two minutes of waiting, Danny finally sends another message, his heart hammering against his ribcage in fearful anticipation. âYou ok?âÂ
The dots vanish. When they finally pop back up, theyâre only there for a second before his words come through. âCan I come in?â Â
Danny shoots out of his seat, nearly tripping over the rug in his small living room as he scrambles to the door, not bothering to put on shoes as he rushes out into the hallway with his keys in hand. Austin only ever showed up like this when he got into arguments with his family or his current boyfriend, Tobi. But every other time, he had always given more warning before heading over. And he had never asked this late. Â
Flying down the stairs, Danny canât get to the building door fast enough, especially when he sees Austin shivering in the rain through the glass. Thankfully, he remembers to slow down just before he makes contact with it, but he still nearly slams it open, desperate to get the other man inside as soon as he could. âWhat happened?â The words barely leave his lips before Danny all but drags Austin into the building, already ushering him towards the stairs and back to his apartment.Â
âTobi.â Â
He's been screaming, I can hear it in his voice. At least he doesnât look hurt. Swear to god, if that asshole hit him- Danny says nothing more as he takes the lead, thankful that even though there werenât any elevators, he only lived on the second floor. It isnât until he locks the door securely behind them, watching Austin kick his shoes off as he takes a deep breath before Danny speaks again. âWine? Something stronger?âÂ
Even in the low light of the entryway, Danny can see just how bloodshot Austinâs eyes were as he looks up at the question, how the skin around it was raw and red like he had been crying for hours. âSomethinâ stronger.âÂ
âAny preferences?âÂ
âGot any whiskey?â His voice is tired, broken as they move to the kitchen, and he leans against the counter as Danny searches through the alcohol cabinet for the right bottle. Â
âHoney Jack Daniels. That work?âÂ
âI could kiss ya.â Though his tone was still thick with exhaustion, a smile breaks onto his features as he wipes away the remaining raindrops dotting his face. âAnd I- I hate to ask this of ya, âspecially on such short notice but I- can I crash on your couch tonight? And maybe borrow a pair of sweatpants anâ a t-shirt?âÂ
âCourse you can, youâre always welcome here. But you are not sleeping on the couch, do you know how old it is? That thing lived in the Kiszkaâs garage until we all moved away and I got stuck with it. I have a queen and usually stick to one side, we can just share my bed if youâre comfortable.â Â
For a moment, Danny fears that the other would burst into tears as he blinks up at him through heavy lids, his voice cracking when he speaks. âI am, thank you. Again, Iâm sorry to intrude or ruin anyâa your plans for the night.âÂ
âBelieve me, youâre not ruining anything.â Laughing the words out, Danny turns to grab two glasses, setting them on the counter next to the bottle. âBefore you texted, I was falling asleep to some documentary about Jupiter that Sam recommended. It's no intrusion, promise.âÂ
âAlright...âÂ
âWant yours on the rocks? I have those fancy sphere ice molds we can use.â Pausing as he opens the freezer, Danny does a once-over of Austin, all the way from his downcast stare hidden beneath dripping curls to the soaked edges of his jeans. âWhy donât you go change into something dry while I get the drinks. Then we can talk about what happened, yeah?âÂ
âYeah. And uh- yeah, rocks. Rocks is good. Can you make it a double, please?âÂ
âMhm. Sweats are in the dresserâs bottom drawer, t-shirts are in the closet. Should be a few towels under the bathroom sink if you need any and thereâs a clothesline in the shower if you want to let your things dry overnight.â Resuming his previous task, Danny grabs the molds from the freezer, beginning to pick off the small pieces that had formed on the top of the silicone lid.Â
âThank you, Daniel. I canât- I canât tell ya how thankful I am to have ya in my life.âÂ
Though his heart breaks ever so slightly, both at the sentiment and the look of utter defeat written across the other manâs face, Danny offers him a small, but genuine smile. âBack at you. Youâre one of my best friends, Austin, my family. Now go get changed before you get hypothermia.â Â
Offering him one last smile, Austin turns to make his way through the apartment, finding Dannyâs room in no time and closing the door to change. Focusing on getting the ice out, Danny finds himself unable to ignore the ball of anxiety growing in the pit of his stomach that he knew wouldnât go away until Austin told him everything. The drinks are made in no time as he mutes his racing thoughts, allowing himself to go through the familiar motions mindlessly. Â
Just when he sits down drinks in hand, Austin emerges from the room, bundled in a pair of black sweatpants and a shirt that Danny knew was oversized on even his own frame. Quick to join him, Austin plops down on the couch, immediately making himself comfortable as he yanks a blanket off the back of it and draws his knees up to his chest. Offering him his glass, Danny waits as the other man situates himself fully before handing it to him, watching as he takes more than a few large sips before resting it on his knee.Â
âTobi anâ I broke up.âÂ
âReally??â Thankfully, Danny manages to conceal the excitement from creeping into his tone, and he forces himself to keep the smile from his face as he twists his expression into one of surprise and concern. Â
âYup. Kicked âim out, too. Told âim he better be gone by the time I get back tâmorrow morninâ. Gave âim the night to pack.âÂ
âHoly shit-â Thank fucking GOD. I thought heâd never escape that relationship unless Tobi broke up with him. âWhat happened?â Dannyâs words are quiet, gentle as he recognizes he could be treading on thin ice.Â
Austin takes a deep breath, sipping his drink once more as he looks down at the threadbare fabric beneath them. âCaught âim cheatinâ on me with some boy thatâs barely legal. The fucker left their messages open on the table when he went to the bathroom, like he-â His voice cuts out, and he brings the edge of the cool glass to his lips, swallowing hard before continuing with watery words. âLike he wanted me to see it.âÂ
Dannyâs jaw clenches as rage begins to rapidly grow within him, finding himself grasping at every curse he could use towards the man. âAnd that ainât even the worst part. Worst part is, I found texts to 'im where- where he said that I meant nothinâ to âim. That he was only with me âcause I was lettinâ âim live with me. Planned to dump me the second he saved enough to get his own place anâ then they could- they could finally be together.âÂ
âAustin, I-â His words escape him, and heâs quick to redirect his anger, knowing that it wouldnât be helpful for either of them. Closing the distance between them as the first of the other manâs tears fall, Danny wraps an arm around him, pulling Austin against his side. âIâm so sorry. He doesnât deserve you, never did.âÂ
âItâs my own damn fault.â Austin shakes his head, roughly wiping the tears from his cheeks and sniffling as he avoids Dannyâs eye. âI was so stupid lettinâ âim into my life so fast, lettinâ âim move in with me âcause he ain't got nowhere else'tuh go.âÂ
âHe took advantage of your kindness, you canât blame yourself for that.â Â
âI can if itâsuh pattern.â Anger flashes behind his eyes when he finally rips his gaze up to meet Dannyâs, burning with self-hatred and regret as another wave of tears pours down his cheeks. âI put myself in these relationships knowinâ full well that the guyâs scum on Godâs fuckinâ green Earth! I always know the endinâ, but I dive right inâtuh a relationship anyway. Why do I do this to myself, Daniel?âÂ
Taking a deep breath, Danny exhales it through his nose as he fights the urge to look away, his nerves turning his stomach upside down. âDo you want me to be honest?âÂ
âPlease.âÂ
Though Austin had asked for the truth, Danny hesitates, worried about how the other man would take it in the state he was in. âIt- it hurts, it really fucking hurts when you find out that the âniceâ guy youâre with is actually a piece of shit. Just having to accept that it was all an act to get you to trust him before- before showing his true colors. I think youâre scared of having to go through that. Of being blindsided just when you thought you were safe. You canât be blindsided if you already knew they were a bad guy going into the relationship.âÂ
Danny stops, watching the other man for any reaction, for any anger at his words. But Austin only blinks the water from his lashes, looking over at Danny with wide eyes as the gears turn within his head. âAnd I think- I think that youâre scared to truly open yourself up to a partner, to trust them like that. With shit guys, you donât have to worry about that because they just donât- they donât care about the relationship, about- about you, enough to ask or- or make themselves available for those conversations. Y'know?âÂ
Taking a deep breath, Austinâs eyes find the screensaver now occupying Dannyâs TV, becoming still as a statue. Danny waits with bated breath for the other shoe to drop, for Austin to say or do anything at all. Just when heâs about to speak up, Austinâs eyes find Dannyâs once more, stopping his words in their tracks. âReckon youâre right.âÂ
âWhat?âÂ
âI said, youâre right. Didnât haveâtuh read me like that but-â A small, sad smile splits his lips, and Danny feels his anxieties shrink knowing that he hadnât further upset him. âThank you, Daniel. You- you didnât hold back, just gave it to me straight, and I âpreciate that. And congratulations, you just did what my therapist tried ân failed to do.âÂ
âOh yeah, and whatâs that?âÂ
âGet me to talk âbout my feelinâs, the real bad parts of my datinâ life; like actually talk âbout it. And figure out what the fuck is wrong with me.âÂ
âThereâs nothing wrong with you, Austin. Sure, thereâs a few things you might want to work on for your own wellbeing, but thereâs nothing wrong with you. And if you havenât been actually talking to your therapist, then itâs no wonder why theyâve âfailedâ.âÂ
âI guess weâll never know.â For a moment, Austin appears to relax ever so slightly, but as his eyes drop to the rugged edges of his cuticles, tension slowly seeps back into his body. âHow do I stop doinâ this?âÂ
Danny draws in a long breath, exhaling it through his nose sharper than he intended, and he offers the other man a gentle squeeze to his shoulder. âTake a break from dating. Like I said, I think thereâs some self-work and reflection that can be done. Which is hard, I know; but the alternative is to keep- to keep hurting yourself with these kinds of relationships. I donât want you to put yourself through that, Austin.â His voice cracks, and Danny swallows the lump forming in his throat as he feels his eyes sting with tears. âIf you want to break this pattern, Iâll be right here beside you along the way. And when- and when you can see your value, how much youâre truly worth, then we find you a partner whoâs gonna show you all the love and care you deserve.âÂ
âWe sure that thereâs even men âround these parts that fit that description?â Wiping the last of his tears from his cheeks, Austin offers Danny a halfhearted smile.Â
âGuarantee it. Iâll help you find one, donât you worry.âÂ
âWell thank ya kindly. Youâre- youâre one of the good ones. I ainât ever met a kinder soul than you, Daniel Wagner, and I mean it. Samuelâs lucky to have you.âÂ
âThank you, that- that means a lot. And itâs more like Iâm lucky to have him. He's one of the good ones too. And so are you, Austin.âÂ
âAh!â Dramatically clasping his hand over his heart, Austin goes limp on the cushions beside Danny, his other hand moving up to delicately rest the back against his forehead as his expression twists into one of mostly feigned sorrow. âWhen is it my turn to fall mad in love!?âÂ
âAwww, donât worry, your time will come.â Austin sits up again, shrugging as he glances over at Danny before his eyes dart down to his fingertips, beginning to pick at the rough edges of his cuticles. Offering the other man a gentle nudge, Danny moves his free hand to rest over Austinâs. âBelieve me, if Sam hadnât already set up camp in my heart, you wouldâve stolen it right out of my chest when we met.âÂ
The words cause Austin to snort, and Danny canât help but grin back at him as he watches the otherâs fear slowly slip away, replaced quickly by his exhausted amusement. âMhm, right. And how long was Samuel in there âfore I came along?âÂ
â...9, 10 years? Give or take.â Feeling his cheeks heat, he gives him a light shove as Austin breaks down into laughter, but Danny canât fight his smile from returning to his lips. âWhat can I say, Iâm really good at playing the long game.âÂ
âShould I even be takinâ datinâ advice from a man who waited 10 years to tell âis best friend that he loved âim?âÂ
âYes, yes you should. Iâm no expert, but Iâve always found that the best relationships start as friendships. You get to know them without the pressure of a new relationship, get to see who they are before committing like that. Just let yourself feel whatever you feel towards them without any expectations of how you âshouldâ feel or where the relationship will go to overwhelm you.âÂ
âYeah, anâ who am I gonna be friends with? I ainât been in the city that long, anâ you know I ainât good at meetinâ new people.âÂ
âWe can go to Bradleyâs together, just mingle, see if we meet anyone. And I can introduce you to my friends, then you can be friends with them.âÂ
âAh yes,â Austin pauses, making eye contact as a mischievous smile twists his lips. âYour three friends, two if you ainât countinâ Samuel.âÂ
âListen, all Iâm saying is that Karen and Kelly did a great job at raising them. I think you and Josh would really get along...âÂ
âI thought you said I should take a break from datinâ, anâ now youâre tryna set me up with your boyfriendâs brother?âÂ
âAm not-â Laughing the words out, Danny shakes his head before meeting the otherâs eye. âIâm saying that you should take your dating break, do that self-work while making new friends. Even if they donât become something more when youâre ready to get back out there, you still have those friendships. Lord knows you could use more of those, and yes, I know that Iâm one to talk.âÂ
For a moment, Danny fears that the other had drifted back into the corners of his mind as Austin stares at the half-melted ice in his drink, abandoned and forgotten on the coffee table at some point of their conversation. âRight, again, Mr. Wagner. Jesus Christ,â Austin drags his hands down his face, letting out a frustrated groan. âCoulda saved myself months of torture if I had just come to you in the first place.âÂ
âDonât beat yourself up over it, youâre asking for help now, and thatâs what matters.âÂ
âThanks for beinâ here for me.âÂ
âAny time. I love you, man.â Offering his shoulder one final squeeze, Danny unwraps his arm from around Austin, straightening himself out as he reaches for his glass and takes a quick sip. âNow, did you wanna talk about anything else, get into anything deeper, or are you good for the night?âÂ
âLord knows Iâm good. Thanks again for listeninâ.âÂ
âThatâs what Iâm here for.â Glancing at his phone, Danny grabs the remote, waking the TV from its sleep mode before looking back at the other man. âWell, itâs only 12:15 so we could go to sleep or watch something, I donât have work tomorrow so Iâm good with either.â  Â
âCan we watch somethinâ? Donât know if I can sleep yet...âÂ
âMhm, any ideas?âÂ
Austinâs eyes grow distant, losing himself within another world as a smile begins to break onto his lips. âCould watch Mary Poppins if you got Disney.â Suddenly snapping back to attention, a blush paints his cheeks as his gaze grows bashful. âJulie Andrews isâuh icon. And I may or may notâa had the fattest fuckinâ crush on Dick Van Dyke startinâ when I was 5 all the way âtill I was 12.âÂ
âOh my god-â Laughing the words out, Dannyâs hand moves up to cover the grin that had quickly found his features, just barely avoiding Austinâs swat.Â
âLook me in the eyes anâ tell me Bert ainât cute, at least in the 60âs way. Heâs a jack of all trades, fun anâ artistic, an' heâs a gentleman to Mary Poppins. He got the looks, personality, allâa it. Sure, his accentâs a lilâ goofy, but he makes up for it with the restâa his performance.âÂ
âMhm.â Unable to conceal the smile from his face, Danny says nothing more as he queues the movie up, hitting play before grabbing a blanket and making himself comfortable. âWell, Iâll let you know if I agree, itâs been so long since I watched this, I canât even begin to remember what he looks like.â Â
Austin lets out a light laugh as the title sequence begins, his eyes soon locking on the screen when the painted London cityscape fades into view, followed quickly by gentle orchestral music. Though he knew he would soon need to pay attention to the movie, Danny canât help but hold his gaze on the other man, and the last of his fears melt away as he sees Austinâs spirit's lift. Sure, he looked exhausted, and Danny knew that he was surely still hurting, but everything that happened no longer occupied the front of his mind, and he couldnât miss the small, content smile that settles onto his lips. Iâd call that a win for the night.Â
Finding his glass and sipping on his watery whiskey, Danny settles into the couch, feeling Austinâs head come to gently rest on his shoulder as he turns his attention to the screen. With each song, Austin hums along quietly, and Danny canât help but feel the light tug of sleep on his eyelids within thirty minutes. Talk, thatâll wake me up. âHow do you think they did that trick? The whole Mary Poppins reaching into her bag. I mean itâs not like they had modern CGI in 1964, so it had to be an optical-â Â
Glancing over at Austin, Danny cuts himself off, finding the other fast asleep against him with his empty glass nestled into the blanket in his lap. With slow, calculated movements, Danny grabs it, trying as hard as he can to not disturb Austin as he places it on the coffee table beside his own. He'll be fine, he needs the sleep anyway. Â
Though he knew his back would surely be sore the next day if he fell asleep on the couch, Danny makes no attempt to move, figuring that Austin would wake by the end of the movie and they could stumble to bed half asleep then. Besides, Danny would feel bad leaving Austin, the last thing he wanted was for him to wake up alone in his living room in the middle of the night. Looking back to the TV, Danny allows his body to fully relax, letting his focus be consumed by the technicolor images dancing across his screen. And with each passing minute, he finds himself agreeing more and more with Austin.Â
Julie Andrews really was an icon, and as much as heâd hate to eventually admit it to the other man, Bert was kind cute...at least in the 60âs kind of way.Â

Danny loved that his band was finally getting at least some recognition, he just hadnât imagined that their first live gig would be doing covers at a local bar overrun with college students. It wasnât the students that bugged him, in fact he was thankful for them. Because so many of their favorite bands were some of the greats- Kiss, Zepplin, Def Leppard, Metallica- that bar remained unchanged even as more and more surrounding establishments caved into the âpopâ craze and turned into neon nightclubs. And although he never went to college, Danny had spent enough time in the bar scene over the last few years to know that no one tips musicians better than newly 21-year-olds legally drunk for the first time. Â
No, it was the fact that they were only doing covers that bothered him. He and the other guys in Archer had worked so hard to get their band âout thereâ more. They had spent countless hours writing, practicing, and perfecting original songs, had contacted every local radio station and record label, but only got doors slammed in their faces. One day the world would hear their music, but no record labels wanted to sign new rock artists, unsure of whether to take the risk that they would go unheard over the stream of constant pop slowly consuming every radio station. Â
Pushing his thoughts to the back of his mind, Danny tunes back into the cacophony of noise surrounding him, taking a sip of his room temperature Budweiser and cringing at the taste of it. Having lost track of time and being too anxious to remember he had it, his drink had grown flat and too-warm, the fizz of it uncomfortable on his tongue. Is this gig even worth it? I mean, itâs our first live show, but it feels wrong that itâs only covering other real artists. Maybe we should just quit while weâre ahead.Â
The panic coursing through his mind immediately derails when he sees a flash of soft chestnut waves catch the light halfway across the bar from him, and he canât help but let his eyes wander down to the deep maroon silk blouse cascading from the ownerâs frame. And by the looks of it, she was set on a path straight to Danny, somehow making her way through the crowd easily even as she kept her head turned away, speaking to two beautiful men following close behind. Maybe Iâll stay a little longer. God, I hope one of those guys isnât her boyfriend or something. Â
Turning away from the approaching group, Danny signals down one of the bartenders, tapping his ring against the glass of his ruined beer to ask for another. Suddenly, someone leans against the bar at his side, and he barely has a chance to register the momentary glimpse of maroon silk and long brown hair before they speak. âMake that two.âÂ
Looking over at his company, Danny finds that the âwomanâ that had caught his eye across the bar wasnât a woman at all, but a gorgeous young man looking up at him through his lashes with a glint in his eye that Danny knew meant nothing but trouble. Oh- that works too. Â
âCan I pay for your drink?âÂ
âWhy?â The word leaves his lips before Danny can think, and embarrassment tinges his cheeks as he struggles to keep his expression from wavering.Â
âBecause my brothers saw you eyeing me and I think youâre cute.â Although the man offers him a smile thick with charm, Danny doesnât miss the way the corners of his lips falter ever so slightly or that all too familiar glimmer of fear in his eyes. âIf that isnât too bold of me to say.âÂ
âIt isnât.âÂ
âAlright then, can I buy you a drink?âÂ
âOnly if you tell me your name.â The second the bartender sets their glasses down in front of them, the man already has his cash in hand, immediately paying for the drinks before Danny can even move to stop him.Â
âSam. What about you? Anything I can call you, other than handsome?â Â
Surprised at the cheesy pick-up attempt and the sudden rush of warmth at the sight of Samâs lopsided grin, Danny snorts, finally allowing his smile to shine through the cool expression he had trained his face into. âDoes that line usually work on guys?âÂ
âOh, youâd be surprised. Some guys are just way too stupid and horny to see through my bullshit.â Â
âAnd do you think Iâm just another stupid, horny guy?â Cocking his eyebrow at Sam, something flares deep within his chest as Danny watches the other man grow shy at his question, a slightly nervous smile replacing his confident grin slowly.Â
âNo, I just use it to see if a guy is worth my time or not.âÂ
âAm I worth your time?â Despite his words, Danny makes sure to tinge his tone with sultry amusement, slowly letting the smile creep back onto his face so Sam knew he meant nothing by it.Â
âI guess weâll find out. Câmon, letâs go to a quieter corner.â Before Sam even takes a step, Danny feels his slender fingers wrap around his wrist, his cool skin a relief against his own in the muggy bar. Allowing Sam to guide him through the small crowds of people, they finally stop in what seemed to be the only uninhabited corner of the venue, far enough away from any speakers so that they could just barely hear each other without yelling.Â
âWhat about your brothers? Wonât they come looking for you?âÂ
âNa, I wouldnât worry about them. Theyâre probably right in front of the stage enjoying the show already. They only come for the alcohol and live music.âÂ
âHow about you? You here for the music too or just got dragged along?âÂ
Sam all but rolls his eyes at the question, scoffing lightly before taking a drink. âJust got dragged along. The only people that play at places like this are just shitty cover bands.â Â
Fighting the grin trying to overtake his lips, Danny coughs to muffle a laugh that he canât keep in, hoping that Sam wouldnât notice or read too much into it. It would be much funnier if he didnât realize just who he said that to until Danny stepped onto that stage. Stage. Shit, how long have I got? Checking his watch, Danny curses himself, realizing that he only had about five minutes before their band was introduced. I can stay for a little longer⊠I mean, the stage is right there. Just change the subject. âYou must be new in town, I havenât seen you at Mirador before.âÂ
âYup, just moved here from Michigan, decided I wanted to try the big city life for a change. My brothers have been here for ages, though, so they picked the bar.âÂ
âOh shit, Iâm from Michigan too.âÂ
âReally?âÂ
âBorn and raised.âÂ
âWhat brought you to LA then?âÂ
What brought me to LA? The need to escape, just go anywhere else? The inability to ignore that pit that grew in my stomach every day I stayed, knowing that my life would be meaningless if I didnât go? You canât say that, Danny, youâll fucking scare him off. Just- just play it off. âSex.â Refocusing his emotional energy, Danny grins wolfishly at Sam as he watches his eyes go wide at the word. âDrugs. Rock and Roll, baby. Thatâs what itâs all about, right?â Â
âRight.â Although Sam smiles at him, something lurks beneath it that Danny canât quite place. Was it confusion, surprise, or judgement? I mean he canât judge me for that considering the bar weâre in right now. âHow long you been living here?âÂ
âAlmost four years. Timeâs really flown by though.â Time. Fuck. Looking down at his watch and seeing that he had only three minutes left, Dannyâs heart sinks as he turns his attention back to Sam, not wanting to leave that corner, not wanting to leave him so soon. âWell, Sam, Iâve really, really liked talking to you, but I gotta go.â Grabbing a discarded pen and napkin off a nearby table, Danny scrawls out his landline number before handing it to Sam while trying to ignore the disappointment clear on his face. âCall me tonight? Or tomorrow, just not before noon.âÂ
âWhat, you have a hot date you gotta get to?âÂ
âNo,â Danny grins, clearly confusing the other man as the hurt on his face becomes muddled momentarily. âMy shitty cover band is about to go on.â As much as he wanted to stay and watch Sam process his confession, Danny allows himself only a second to watch the realization and embarrassment mix in his expression before turning away and all but sprinting to the small âbackstageâ area. Â
The second Dave sees him, he all but jumps Danny, his eyes wide and wild as he scrambles to make sure everything was ready. âWhere the fuck have you been, man? What are you wearing??âÂ
âWhat do you mean?â Glancing down, Danny canât find anything wrong with his flannel, t-shirt, and black jeans, and confusion overtakes him as Dave throws a metallic silver shirt at him. Â
âPut this on. I want your eyeliner done and hair teased at least a foot higher in the next thirty seconds.â Danny has no time to respond as Dave shoves a can of hairspray and an eyeliner pencil into his hand before scurrying off, no doubt to check on the state of their other bandmates. Â
Jesus Christ, how am I supposed to play in this? Shedding his layers despite him being extremely aware of the lack of privacy he had, Danny squeezes into the shirt Dave had given him, thankful that the material, although still tight, seemed to stretch to accommodate his shoulders, chest, and biceps. As the band on stage says their goodbyes, Danny rushes over to a small, dirty mirror in the corner, hastily smearing the pencil liner on his lower lash line before smudging it with his fingers quickly and moving on to his hair. With how frizzed out it had become in the humidity of the bar, he barely has to tease it before locking the curls into place with an ungodly amount of hairspray. He has mere seconds to adjust his bangs before Daveâs at his side again, all but throwing his guitar into his hands just to run over to the edge of the stage with the rest of the band. Â
Alright Danny, it may just be covers but this is still the largest crowd weâve played for. Donât fuck this up. Making his way to the others, he walks up just in time to hear Daveâs last run through of their set list. âOpening with Welcome to the Jungle, next is Pour Some Sugar On Me, Sweet Child Oâ Mine, Whole Lotta Love, and ending with I Was Made for Lovinâ You. Danny, thatâs a lot of guitar solos, think you can handle it?âÂ
All eyes find Danny, and anxiety spikes in the pit of his stomach, suddenly overcome with nausea. Not now, Danny. Not fucking right now. âYeah, I got it.âÂ
âYou sure?â Nodding his response, Dave slaps Danny lightly on the shoulder with a grin before pulling him into a side hug. âYou got this, man. Cool with doing backup vocals too?âÂ
âYep.â Before he can say anything more, Danny registers a man introducing them, their band, over the microphone, and in that moment, pride fills Danny. Taking a deep breath, he follows his bandmates out onto the stage, momentarily blinded by the lights as adrenaline courses through his veins. Daveâs introduction goes unheard as Danny situates himself on stage, plugging his guitar into the amplifier and finding himself disappointed at the lack of pedals.Â
Dave is looking at me; why is he looking at me like that. FUCK. Welcome to the Jungle- I start this one off. Forcing himself to move, Danny somehow steadies his hands enough to take a ready position, and he feels his heart stop in that second of silence before he blasts the intro riff over the speakers. âOh, my God.â Even over the sheer volume of his guitar, Danny can clearly hear Dave whine the words into his microphone, and it isnât long before their drummer and rhythm guitarist join in, finally followed by their bassist plucking that familiar beat out on the other side of the stage. Â
What happens next, Danny canât even begin to explain. As their volume grows, overlapping and building off each other, Danny feels himself grow lighter and lighter. But at the same time, he was entirely aware of his surroundings; of the heat radiating off the lights, the music rattling his brain and vibrating the very floor beneath him. He was there, but not. He was free, lost in the notes blasting from the rough strings beneath his fingertips. This. This is what I was born to do.  Â
âSex.â Samâs heart skips a beat at the word, his breath catching in his throat at the hungry smile twisting the manâs lips. âDrugs. Rock and Roll, baby. Thatâs what itâs all about, right?âÂ
âRight.â Heâs living. Really truly living in the moment. What I would give to have that same confidence. âHow long you been living here?âÂ
âAlmost four years. Timeâs really flown by though.â Panic twists in Samâs chest as he catches the other man glance down at his watch, a scowl twisting his features as he looks back up. âWell, Sam, Iâve really, really liked talking to you, but I gotta go.â Watching as he hastily scrawls something onto a napkin before holding it out for him to take, Sam tries to not let himself be too disappointed now that he had his number. âCall me tonight? Or tomorrow, just not before noon.âÂ
âWhat, you have a hot date you gotta get to?â Could you sound more pathetic? God, itâs like youâve never had a guy blow you off before.Â
âNo,â What-? With the manâs answer and smile causing the anxious thoughts consuming his mind to completely screech to a stop, Sam can do nothing but freeze. âMy shitty cover band is about to go on.âÂ
He canât be serious. Heâs not- Oh my God, he is serious. Sam feels as if his heart had stopped beating in his very chest as he watches the man grin at him before sprinting towards the backstage area, almost immediately yanked into the hustle and bustle of it. I look like an ass now, Iâm surprised he even gave me his number. Glancing down at the scrap in his hand, Sam curses himself as he realizes that he never got the strangerâs name; he had never given it thanks to Samâs shitty pickup line, and he hadnât written it along with his number. Usually this is when I sneak off, but maybe I should just stay, try to find him after the show. I mean it wouldnât hurt to see if his cover band is in fact shitty.Â
Using his slight build to his advantage, Sam weaves through the crowds surrounding the stage as the current band says their final goodbyes before making their exit, and he picks up his pace for fear of getting caught in the middle of the crowd when the next band came on. Thankfully, Sam manages to push himself to the front, right up to his brothersâ sides, and he taps them on their shoulders to let them know he had joined them.Â
âSammyyyy! Youâre hanging out with us tonight instead of hiding in the corner with random boys?â Looping his arm around Samâs shoulder clumsily, it was clear that Josh hadnât decided to pace himself with his drinks, his rosy cheeks, cheery smile, and slightly slurred lisp a dead giveaway to his sobriety. Â
âWhat happened to that guy? He was looking at you like he wanted to eat you alive earlier, Iâm surprised youâre not tonguing in the corner.âÂ
Flicking Jakeâs ear, Sam resists the urge to roll his eyes, his cheeks growing warm under his brothersâ teasing. âHe had to go, gave me his number though.âÂ
When the twins exchange a knowing look, Sam can immediately tell exactly what they were thinking. âNo, he didnât make up an excuse to blow me off. Or at least I hope he didnât, weâll find out soon.âÂ
âWhat do you mean?âÂ
âPlease welcome, the one, the only, Archer!â With his attention ripped to the stage, Sam waits with bated breath as he watches each member of the band take their place until finally, he was standing right in front of him. With his teased curls, smudged eyeliner, and that tight, silver shirt that clung to his muscles, he looked like an honest to god rockstar. The lead singerâs introduction fizzles into nothingness as Samâs attention stays on his rockstar completely, watching as he readied his instrument with shaking hands. Â
When silence falls over the crowd, each band memberâs eyes locked on his rockstar expectantly, fear for the man overcomes Sam. Heâs lead guitar. He must be starting the song, and heâs freezing up. Itâs- unexpected, what with how confident he seemed. Taking a deep breath, the man finally gets his fingers to move, and as the first few notes blare over the speakers, it was like the music took him over completely. His rockstar had so easily allowed the music to consume him, and he looked oh so good doing it. Â
With his attention fully on fixed on the other man, Sam barely notices the other instruments joining in, their volume only building as they near the first verse. The second their singer finally adds his vocals, Sam watches his rockstarâs confidence grow, his movements becoming more bold and the forced smile on his face slowly transforming into a wide grin. And as the song progresses, a pit begins to grow within Sam, overtaking his body and mind as disappointment crashes over him in waves. Â
There has to be something between them, no one can have that much chemistry on stage unless theyâre fooling around off stage. Forcing himself away from his spiraling thoughts, Samâs breath catches in his throat at the sight of his rockstar, still completely lost within the music. Â
Sam didnât know how to explain it, but he felt absolutely filthy watching him so intently. With his curls bouncing with the beat, his tongue poking out between his teeth in focused exhilaration, and each slight jut of his hips as he moved to the music, Sam felt like he was watching pure pornography. And when it came time for the guitar solo, Sam is filled with pure lust and jealousy when he lifts his guitar to play it in front of him, allowing their singer to grind into the air just beside (and nearly against) his leg. Â
Their set flies by faster than Sam can process it, his cheeks surely bright red and his jeans becoming tight at the crotch with each solo. Sam knew he could watch him play forever, he wanted to watch him play forever; everything he did seemed to lure Sam deeper and deeper into his trance. Every time he stuck his tongue out, licking the air suggestively, Sam wanted to know what it would feel like against his skin. He needed to see his eyes roll back in not just pleasure of the music, but pleasure of the flesh as well; needed to know what those curls felt like tangled in his grasp. Sam knew he would give anything to have his muscular biceps on either side of his head, holding his body up as he-Â
âWeâve got one last song for you tonight Mirador! Thank you for coming out, can I get some fucking noise one last time for Archer!?â And just like that, Samâs train of thought is completely derailed by the lead singerâs words and the eruption of cheers around him. âWe got one more song for you tonight, and then we're doing shots at the barrrrrr!â The bar. I can find him after the show and- and what, Sam? Watch him do shots with his âbandmateâ. I should just leave. Â
The second the thought crosses his mind, his rockstar seems to finally notice him in the audience, his eyes locking on Samâs as an exhilarated grin overtakes his features, freezing Sam in his spot. When the bassist starts them off, followed shortly by the drums as well as both him and the other guitarist, his rockstarâs eyes stay trained on Sam. When their frontman takes the microphone to sing, trying to catch the guitaristâs eye, he still refused to look away and Sam wasnât about to be the one to break their eye contact. Even if he wanted to, he knew that he physically couldnât tear his eyes from the other man. It was as if a spell had been put over him, and in that moment, Sam felt like they were the only two people in the room.Â
Even though his rockstar had already done the backup vocals for every other song, Sam canât help but feel a rush of excitement as the other man makes his way over to his microphone, his stare still locked on Sam. Â
âI was made for lovinâ you, babyÂ
You were made for lovinâ me.Â
And I canât get enough of you, babyÂ
Can you get enough of me?âÂ
Samâs eyes donât even need to leave him to see the look the twins exchange, no doubt having followed the musicianâs line of sight straight back to their brother. But he canât care enough to think about the teasing he knew he would endure later; all he could think, feel, smell, even fucking taste was his rockstar. Fuck the chemistry he had with the lead singer, the other man was looking at Sam like he wanted to eat him alive the second he got off that stage. With each passing minute neither look away until finally, the other man takes a moment to glance down at his guitar for the brief solo, unintentionally poking his tongue out between his teeth in concentration.Â
The moment it ends, his eyes are back on Sam, as if he was physically drawn to him. Losing all concept of time and space, Sam is surprised when the music fades to nothing and is replaced by cheers and applause around him, ripping himself back to reality abruptly. âGoodnight Mirador, we have been Archer!â Samâs rockstar takes one last look at him before making his way off the stage and being swept up into an excited celebration with the rest of the band, and it doesn't take long for the crowd around them to dissipate as people refill their drinks and go back to their conversations. Â
âAlright Sam, I think Jake and I are gonna head over to the Caravel, wanna join us?â Mischief glimmers behind Joshâs eyes as he asks, surely knowing what Samâs answer would be yet wanting to hear it for himself. Â
âActually, I think Iâm gonna stick around here for a while, maybe get another drink.âÂ
âHmmmm, this is very out of character for you, Sammy boy.â Slinging his arm around Samâs shoulders, Jake tries to keep the amused grin from his face, but the corners of his lips give him away as they twitch in protest. âCould it have anything to do with a certain guitarist?â Â
âNo.â Fuck. Feeling his cheeks burn, Sam only prayed that it was still dim enough in the bar to hide it from his brothers. âMaybe Iâm just trying to do what I moved here for; yâknow, get out there and have a little fun. Why do you care anyway?âÂ
âAwww donât get butthurt, Sammy. Itâs ok to have a crush.âÂ
Shoving Jakeâs arm off himself, Sam canât help but roll his eyes at the words, annoyance flaring in his chest at his brothersâ teasing. âFuck off.âÂ
âYou know we mean nothing by it. Just stay safe, call the apartment to let us know where you are at the end of the night, and try not to get killed. And for the love of god, wear protection.â A serious sadness flashes behind Joshâs eyes, breaking Samâs heart ever so slightly, and he tries to push the thought to the back of his mind quickly. Â
âI will, promise.â Realizing that even though his words were meant to ease his brothersâ anxieties, they also still implied something else that sends a new wave of heated embarrassment to his cheeks. âI- I mean, not like I intend to- with- with anyone. I- I donât know, weâll see where the night takes me.â Can they please just leave, already? Hearing a rowdy set of cheers erupt from the bar, Sam glances over to see his rockstar and the rest of his band âtoastingâ, each holding a lime with a sprinkle of salt on the back of one hand, and a shot of what Sam assumed to be tequila in the other.Â
âRight. Have fun, Sammy.â As the twins turn to leave him, Sam hears Jake whisper something under his breath, just loud enough for Sam to hear it. âLord knows he deserves it.âÂ
Jesus Christ. Alright, forget them, just- just what, Sam? Go up to him and flirt with him in front of his entire band? What do you even want to happen? Samâs question is answered almost immediately as he watches his rockstar recover from his shot, barely wincing and sticking his tongue out with a grin at the bite of the alcohol. Anything. I want anything to happen with him.Â
Danny didnât even know how to begin to describe how he had felt on that stage. If he was being honest, he didnât remember most of it, the rush of pure adrenaline coursing through his body wiping his mind clean. Even if he couldnât remember their performance, he knew they had done good- maybe even great by the volume of the crowdâs applause and the excitment of his bandmates. It- it was like the music- the sound, was coming straight from me. I could feel it everywhere- pounding in my ears, vibrating through the strings and numbing my fingertips, the pulse of it on the floor. It was incredible. Â
The second he had stepped off that stage, he felt as if his senses had all been ripped back, no longer needing to focus on his instrument alone. And although he couldnât help that twinge of anxiety in the back of his mind telling him he needed to look for Sam, he chooses to ignore it and lets Dave drag him to the bar with the others. âFive shots of tequila, on me!âÂ
âWhy so generous, huh? What happened to being âdirt poorâ, David, hm?â Speaking over the cheers from his bandmates, Danny grins at Dave, his tone full of nothing but amusement. Â
âThat was before the gig, now itâs after! Do we not deserve a celebratory shot, Daniel?âÂ
Raising his hands in defeat, Danny shrugs, moving closer to their group as a bartender sets down their shots alongside a bowl of lime slices and a saltshaker. âAs long as youâre actually paying.â Grabbing a slice and licking the back of his hand before shaking salt onto the wet skin, Danny takes the shot glass in his other hand, trying to keep it from spilling in the increasingly populated bar.Â
âTo our first gig.â Raising their shots, each member repeats Daveâs words before clinking their glasses together and tapping them on the bar top. Licking the salt, Danny downs the tequila before shoving the lime in his mouth, immediately feeling the heat of the alcohol run down his throat. Trying to keep a straight face, Danny sticks his tongue out, the humid air somehow âcoolingâ the lingering burn. âGentlemen, youâre all officially off the clock. Go enjoy the rest of your night. But donât enjoy it so much you miss practice tomorrow afternoon.â Â
As the others split off, Dave stays at Dannyâs side, draping his arm around his shoulder comfortably. âSo, Daniel. What do you think youâll do with the rest of tonight?âÂ
Find that guy, Sam. If heâs even still here. What if he hated the band and decided to leave before I saw him again? âDunno. Maybe stick around you if thatâs cool.âÂ
âNo can-do, Danno. I have a hot date to get to.â Something glimmers behind Daveâs eye, and Danny canât help but feel a twinge of amusement, knowing his friend was up to no good. âBesides, it looks like youâve got a shadow.â Following Daveâs small gesture to something behind Danny, he casually glances behind himself until his eyes finally land on Sam about 15 feet from them, seemingly very interested in the bar top in front of him. âGo get, âem tiger.âÂ
Before Danny can respond, Dave slaps him on the back encouragingly before leaving in a hurry, making his way through the crowd in an impressive amount of time until he finally disappears within the sea of heads. Fuck. What do I do? Do I look over at him? Do I go talk to him? Should I wait for him to come to me? He came up to me the first time, itâs only fair that I do it this time. Taking a deep breath, Danny turns around, forcing himself to move even as his mind spirals. Slipping into the vacant space beside Sam, Danny is instantly consumed by his presence alone, his mind full of nothing but him. Â
âYou stayed for the show.â Clearly surprising the other man, Danny offers him a small smile as his eyes go wide momentarily, like he hadnât expected him to see him, let alone come up to talk. Â
âOh- uh, yeah. Had to see if your band was shit or not.â Snorting at his response, Danny sees Samâs instant regret melt away slowly, relaxing against the bar comfortably. Â
âAnd were we?âÂ
âNo.â An air of awe hangs in his tone, causing a light blush to settle on Dannyâs cheeks. âYou guys were amazing- you were amazing. Whereâd you learn to play like that?âÂ
âDad taught me acoustic growing up, then I got myself an electric one and figured it out as I went.â  Â
âThatâs so cool.â As admiration takes over Samâs face, glimmering behind his eyes and lighting up his smile, Danny canât ignore the warmth that blooms in his chest. âSo uh, I never got your name.âÂ
âItâs Danny; Danny Wagner,â Extending his hand, anxiety spikes in his chest as Samâs skin meets his, worried that his hands would be uncomfortably sweaty after their set in the humid bar. Fortunately for him, if Sam had felt how clammy he feared his skin would be, he doesnât show it, only offering Danny a small smile at their âofficialâ introduction. âNice to meet you.âÂ
âThe pleasure is mine, Mr. Wagner.â Overplaying his actions, Samâs free hand comes to rest on his chest, batting his eyelashes up at the other man before dropping his act. Focusing on that lopsided grin Danny was becoming very fond of seeing, he tries not to read too much into the fact that Sam still hadnât dropped his hand. âSo uh, do you maybe want to⊠I donât knowâŠâÂ
He wants to leave but is too nervous to suggest it- how cute. âIt is getting a bit crowded in here. Plus, Iâd like to have a conversation with you where I donât have to shout over the music.â With a gentle smile, Danny offers Samâs hand a light squeeze, seeming to cause his anxieties to screech to a halt. âWe could go to another bar, or one of our places. Think itâs too late for any restaurants to be open.âÂ
Although it was too dim to be sure, Danny could swear that Samâs cheeks went bright pink at the suggestion of going back to one of their homes, watching as the other man swallows hard before trying to match his smile. âIâm currently crashing on my brotherâs couch right now soâŠâÂ
âMy place it is.â Still sensing the other manâs nerves, Danny is filled with fear momentarily that he was making Sam feel forced into going back to his place. The last thing he wanted to do was to make Sam uncomfortable. âYou sure? We donât have to.âÂ
âMhm. Can I use your phone to call my brothers, let them know that Iâm at yours for at least a little bit?âÂ
âCourse you can. You drive here?âÂ
âTaxi. We knew that none of us would be sober enough to drive home. Is your place far?âÂ
Ever so slightly shifting his fingers so that they intertwine with Samâs, Danny offers him another small smile as he tries to remember exactly where he had left his guitar and clothes backstage, wanting to leave as soon as possible. âNa, itâs about a five-minute walk if youâre alright with that.âÂ
âLead the way, Danny.â Needing no other persuasion, Danny barely catches the grin flash across Samâs face before he all but drags him through the sea of people. He doesnât stop their path until theyâre fully backstage, doing his best to collect his things without getting in the way of the other bands bustling around the space. Deciding to give the shirt back to Dave the next day, Danny grabs his t-shirt and flannel with one hand as the other finds the handle of his guitar case, trying not to be too disappointed by the fact that both his hands were now full.Â
But before he can get too upset, Samâs slender fingers circle his wrist as they weave back through the crowd and towards the exit, his touch sending electricity coursing through his veins. The freshness of the cool night air is almost too much for his lungs as they finally make their way onto the street, but he takes a deep breath anyway, using the burn as a distraction from his growing stream of worries. What is he expecting from this? What does he want from this night, from me? Â
Unfortunately for Danny, their walk back to his place is slightly awkward as they remain silent, neither knowing what to say to fill the âquietâ of the city night. After what felt like ages, they finally arrive at Dannyâs apartment complex, and with every passing flight of stairs up to his floor, he feels as if his stomach was doing somersaults as he tries to remember how clean the main areas of the apartment were. With five musicians who all worked long hours during the day and filled their nights with practice, it was common that their living room looked as if a tornado had blown through it. Â
Moving his shirts to sandwich them between his arm and ribs, Danny unlocks the door, and relief floods him at the sight. The apartment was still a mess, and Danny felt that undeniable tinge of embarrassment as Sam follows him in, but it wasnât as bad as it couldâve been. There were only a few empty beer and liquor bottles scattered around the living room and kitchen, but the couches and floors were mostly free of their many discarded attempts at gig outfits. âSorry about the mess, phone is in the kitchen, Iâm gonna go put my guitar away. My roomâs the one straight down at the end of the hall to the left, right across from the bathroom.â Â
Unable to decipher the small smile that Sam offers him before turning to find the phone, Danny does all he can to keep himself from sprinting down to his room, even more worried about the state it was in than he had been about the shared area. As soon as he plugs in the old Christmas lights strung around the ceiling and sets his guitar case down, Danny darts around the room as quietly as possible, finding every dirty piece of laundry he had thrown on the floor or his bed in laziness or exhaustion and chucking them into his hamper. He barely has enough time to straighten the last of his room out before the floorboards creak mere feet from his door, and Danny whips around with what he hoped was a cool smile to see Sam standing in the doorway, his eyes sweeping over every inch of the space.Â
He's not- he isnât saying anything. Is it bad? Does he not like it? He follows Samâs eyes carefully as they roam over the multitude of band posters and paraphernalia covering the walls, over to his overflowing vinyl collection, and finally stop on his acoustic and spare electric guitar hanging by his door. âThis is- itâs- so cool. My roomâs never been this⊠personal. Not even when I actually had one.âÂ
âYou like it?â Hope flares in Dannyâs chest momentarily, and he canât help but blush at his apparent need for approval from the other man, only hoping that Sam hadnât noticed it yet.Â
âI love it.â Wandering over to the vinyl's, Sam begins flipping through them and Dannyâs breath catches in his throat watching those slender fingers carefully dance across the thick paper. Suddenly, Samâs eyebrows shoot up as he stops, looking over to Danny with amused surprise clear on his face. âDidnât peg you as the kind of guy thatâd listen to Neil Young.â Flipping away from Harvest, Samâs smile only grows when he sees American Fool. âAnd John Cougar. I mean the KISS, Metallica, Guns Nâ Roses and all that makes sense, but country music? You?âÂ
âFolk- folk rock; I donât do country music. And John Cougar is rock, just not hard rock. Just because Iâm in a âhardâ rock band doesnât mean I canât branch out.â Matching Samâs smile, Danny closes the distance between them as Sam resumes his flipping. Â
After a few seconds, Sam pauses again, tilting the album cover so that Danny could see it. âWhatâs this one? Never heard of them before.âÂ
Fuck. Ok, yeah that one is technically kind of âcountryâ, but not in the way heâd assume. âThatâs uh- Our Mother the Mountain, Townes Van Zandt. Itâs- ok that one is kind of bluesy folk/country.â Seeing the smug grin already twisting Samâs lips, Danny rushes to continue. âBut it isnât like mainstream country, not like Dolly Parton or Willie Nelson⊠which are both bad examples because I like them too- anyway-â What now? What happens next? âDo you uh- what do you want to do?â As hard as he tries, Danny was sure that his nerves had seeped into his tone, trying to silence the anxieties plaguing his mind that he was being too forward or assuming too much.Â
Saying nothing, Sam saunters over to Dannyâs bed, plopping down onto the edge of it before patting the comforter beside him. âTo talk. If thatâs alright.âÂ
âYeah, yeah of course it is.â Awkwardly placing himself at Samâs side, Danny feels every muscle in his body tense, unsure on how physically close he should be for whatever conversation the other man wanted to have. âTalk about what?âÂ
âJust talk.â Moving his hands behind him to lean back, Danny relaxes ever so slightly at Samâs comforting smile and calm demeanor, figuring that if it was a bad conversation, Sam wouldnât be so laid-back. âI like to get to know guys before we do anything, I hope thatâs not a problem.âÂ
Feeling his cheeks heat, Dannyâs eyes shoot up to Samâs, completely entranced by the mischievous glimmer behind them that seemed to beacon him in. âNo- yeah, no thatâs not a problem.â Ok, take that need to rip his clothes off right now and just- just turn it into something else, Danny. Donât make him uncomfortable. âWant me to put some music on? I have some wine somewhere, but itâs probably cheap. I got some grass if you smoke.âÂ
âNothing else?â Does he think I use other drugs? That Iâm just another coked-up rocker?Â
âNope. I donât trust anything else. Weedâs a natural plant, and the only negative side affects Iâll probably ever experience is from smoking, but I already smoke cigarettes so.â Unsure on if Sam had given an answer to his offer, Danny glances around his room just in case, looking for the ash tray that he knew had most of a joint in it. âHave you smoked before?âÂ
âMy brothers let me join them the day I turned 15.â Sam almost laughs the words out, and Danny takes that as a sign that it was safe to assume he would be fine grabbing the joint. Leaving Sam momentarily, Danny finds the ash tray on his dresser, thankful that he had left a lighter right next to it. Â
Sitting back down slightly closer to Sam, Danny reaches behind himself to crack the window open before setting in on lighting the twisted paper at the end. âYou the youngest?â Finally seeing the tip go red, Danny takes a long drag, letting the smoke settle in his lungs, sending the tiniest waves of relaxation through his body. Â
âYup. My brothers are the oldest, twins, then I have an older sister too. What about you, you got any siblings?â Passing the joint to Sam, Dannyâs eyes wander to his lips, watching as the other man brings the filter up to meet them. Â
âYeah, little sister. Sheâs off at Harvard studying law, making something of her life and all that.âÂ
âYour parents donât approve of you being a rockstar?âÂ
Trying not to scoff at his words, Danny takes another hit, thankful that he had finally begun to feel his first hit settle into his bones. âI donât know if Iâd call myself a ârockstarâ, Sammy. Not yet at least. And- and no, but also yes? They thought it was cute when I played guitar in my middle and high school bands, but then when Senior year rolled around and I didnât have a âbackup planâ, they found out I had no intention of going to college and kind of freaked out. They didnât directly say that our band wasnât good enough to actually âmake itâ, but I know thatâs how they felt.â Realizing how heavy their conversation had become because of his words, Danny takes another drag from the joint, trying not to meet Samâs eyes as he passes it to him again. Â
âThatâs why you came to LA.â His words come off as a statement rather than a question, causing Danny to finally tear his gaze back up to Samâs.Â
âYeah. We knew that if we stayed in Michigan, we wouldnât go anywhere. Figured that LA would be the best place to finally get noticed.â Clearing his throat in hopes of at least breaking the silence that hung heavy in the air, Danny forces a smile onto his face. âIsnât as good of a story as moving here for âsex, drugs, or rock and rollâ though. Gotta preserve my stage image, yâknow.âÂ
âI like this Danny better.â Samâs words are earnest, and Danny feels a pang in his chest from the way the other man was looking at him. There was no judgement, no disappointment like Danny worried there would be. Instead, Samâs eyes shone with kindness and understanding, a soft comfort deep within his gaze that truly put Danny at ease. Â
âWhat about you? Iâve talked so much about myself, now itâs your turn. You really move here to try the city life, or did you need to escape the Midwest too?â Â
Absentmindedly offering the joint back to Danny, Sam picks at the throw blanket covering the bed. âBoth I guess. Life wasnât bad back in Michigan; my family was accepting that I wanted to major in Theology even though itâs not exactly a âsafeâ choice, didnât charge me rent or anything. I just knew I wanted to see more, experience more, yâknow? And I missed my brothers, but donât tell them I said that.â Â
Danny takes one last drag before turning the filter towards Sam, holding it out for him to do the same. âDonât worry, your secretâs safe with me.â Instead of taking the joint from Danny, Sam makes direct eye contact with him before leaning in, his lips brushing Dannyâs fingertips as he holds it, trying to keep his jaw from dropping at the sight before him. Samâs time at Mirador had slightly frizzed his waves, and the weed coursing through him left his eyes droopy and tired, a lazy smile playing across his lips as he pulls away, exhaling the smoke. He is absolutely gorgeous. Â
For a moment, Sam drops his defenses, allowing his eyes to drift back to Dannyâs lips as the thought of kissing him right then and there nearly consumes his mind. Donât let your heart get broken again, Sam. You need- you need to be sure he isnât some rocker asshole thatâs just playing vulnerable to get in your pants. Forcing himself off the bed suddenly, Sam strolls over to his vinyl collection, his plan slowly forming in his head as he flips through the records. âMind if we put something on?âÂ
âNo- uh, thatâs fine.â He sounds hesitant, nervous⊠Sam focuses on his task completely, not allowing himself even one glance over at the other man even as he got up to put the ashtray aside, stretching to reach it and causing his tight shirt to ride up ever so slightly, exposing the curve of his- Fuck. Focus, focus. Find a fucking album to play. Wait, what was that one? Flipping back to the previous LP to find Our Mother the Mountain, Sam knew he just had to hear this ânot countryâ music Danny seemed to like so much. Â
âI guess Iâll be the judge if itâs just country music or âbluesy/folk countryâ.â Lowering the needle, Sam glances over at Danny with a small grin as the first few notes play. When the singerâs voice croons through the speaker, Sam almost canât contain his grin, his cheeks already beginning to feel sore. I really have been smiling a lot tonight. Itâs just the weed, I always get smiley and giggly. Or- or itâs because of him. âI hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is country music, Danny.âÂ
Sam catches the other man roll his eyes before his own gaze gravitates to Dannyâs lips, his grin shining bright even in the dim lighting. âThis songâs a bad example.âÂ
âRight. I didnât say it was bad, just that it was country.â Beginning to sway to the music, an idea slowly forms in Samâs head, needing a few seconds to process it in his inebriated state until he finally gets his body to move. Extending his hand towards Danny, he watches as the other manâs confusion flits across his relaxed expression. âDance with me.âÂ
âWhat?âÂ
âYou heard me,â Sam closes the distance between them, his laugh resembling more of a giggle as he nearly collides with the bed. âI said dance with me. Please?âÂ
âIâm a bad dancer.âÂ
âSo am I.âÂ
âIâm high.âÂ
âSo am I.â Grasping his hands, he halfheartedly tries to encourage Danny to stand, fearing that it came off as desperate pleas. âNo one else will see, if thatâs what youâre worried about. I didnât get to dance with you at the bar, so technically you owe me.âÂ
âOh, I do now?â Dannyâs eyebrows shoot up as a surprised smile finds his lips, finally allowing Sam to pull him up and towards what little empty space they had. âOne, I was the one playing, so I couldnât have danced with you, and two, this might not be the best album for dancing like you would at a bar, Sammy.âÂ
âAnd what if I just wanted this?â Moving Dannyâs hands to his waist before dragging his own up the exposed expanse of Dannyâs arms, they stop on his shoulders, pulling him towards himself slightly. Looking up at him through his lashes, Sam waits with bated breath for Dannyâs response, noticing the freckles dotting his nose and cheeks for the first time thanks to their proximity. Cute. Â
âThatâs alright too.âÂ
A wave of calm passes over Sam as he relaxes in Dannyâs arms, gently swaying to the song and feeling as if the music itself was flowing through his body. âWhatâs this one called?âÂ
âBe Here to Love Me.â Before Sam knows it, Danny begins humming to the lyrics, seeming to find his place as he quietly sings along.Â
âBut who cares what the night watchmen say?Â
The stage has been set for the play.Â
So just hold me and tell me youâll be here to love me today.âÂ
With his lips were parted ever so slightly as he looks up at him in admiration, Sam feels his cheeks heat, realizing that their noses were mere inches from the other. It would be so easy to just lean forward and- âYouâre full of surprises tonight, arenât you? You got a beautiful voice, you know?âÂ
âStop- you donât- thank you, Sammy.â Sam had never believed in love at first sight, but when Danny melts under the praise, his cheeks burning bright red as a shy smile twists his lips, he knew that he had found the closest thing to it. With Danny, he felt safe. He didnât know how else to describe it other than that. Sam had been so reluctant to give into his own wants because he feared that Dannyâs âsoft interiorâ had been an act, just something to get into his pants. Too many guys had already pulled that with Sam, and he knew very well by now what to look out for. But Danny, he was different. Sure, on stage he was just like every other Rockstar Sex God, but alone with Sam, he was simply a shy, kind soul who stood before Sam truly embarrassed over the compliment on his musical abilities. Â
âWill you- will you kiss me, Danny?â The words leave his mouth before he can even process the thought, but he feels no regret as a small smile breaks through Dannyâs surprise and he closes the distance between their lips. Electricity crackles on Samâs skin at every point of contact with the other man, sending fireworks shooting through his body and making him feel lighter than air. But at the same time, Dannyâs touch grounded him to the moment, to him. Â
One of his hands had quickly found the small of Samâs back, pulling him into himself until their fronts are pressed firmly against the other, and Samâs heartrate skyrockets when he feels the growing tent in Dannyâs jeans ever so slightly grind into his own. With Dannyâs other hand cupping his jaw and tilting his face upwards, Sam melts into his touch, deepening their kiss as the other man gently licks across his bottom lip. The bite that follows takes Sam by surprise, and he canât prevent the quiet moan that escapes him, his hips involuntarily bucking forward to mix his pain and pleasure. Â
Tangling his fingers in Dannyâs frizzed out curls, Sam gives them a quick tug at the roots, and he doesn't miss the small groan that follows. The energy between them becomes urgent, almost needy as Dannyâs tongue slips in between Samâs lips, desperately licking into his mouth as if he were a starved man. Before Sam knows it, Danny's backing him towards his bed slowly, his guidance gentle and soft despite how Sam knew he must be feeling. He's giving me an âoutâ. He's letting me know that I can easily stop this if I want. Just before the backs of Samâs knees hit the edge of the mattress, Danny stops, and he removes his lips from Samâs only to work his way down to the open expanse of his neck. Weaving his hands into his waves, Danny repeats Samâs earlier motions as he gives a handful of his hair a light yank, and Sam could feel the other man smile against his skin. Â
Untangling his fingers, Danny moves his hands down Samâs sides until they find the hem of his blouse, toying with the fabric between his fingertips as he removes his lips from Samâs neck. âCan I take this off?âÂ
âOnly if yours comes off too.â Â
Grinning wolfishly at him, Dannyâs eyes donât leave Samâs as he pulls the tight fabric up and over his head, discarding it on the floor without even a second glance. For a moment, Sam entirely forgets just how he got Danny to shed his top as his eyes rake over the other manâs body. If he had been able to will his body to move, his hands would have immediately found those broad shoulders, would have slowly dragged his hands across his chest, following that delicate trail of hair until- âYou forget our agreement, Sammy?â Â
Dannyâs voice rips Sam back into the moment, his eyes darting up to the other manâs face as he realizes Danny knew exactly what he was thinking about. Feeling his cheeks heat, Sam sweeps through his mind as fast as he can for any comeback. âYou asked if you could take my shirt off, remember? You never asked me to take it off.âÂ
Cocking an eyebrow at him, Danny closes the space between them, his hands instantly finding the silk as something Sam canât quite place glimmers behind his eyes. The second his top is gone, Danny finds Samâs bare sides, pulling him flush against him as their lips meet once more. Sam doesn't even feel Dannyâs hand drifting back up into his hair, too distracted by each sharp bite and soft, soothing swipe of Dannyâs tongue against his bottom lip until the other man pulls hard enough to just barely break their kiss. âDidnât expect you to be such a brat, but it makes sense now.â Â
Letting out a shallow gasp at his words and the pain spiking through his scalp, he recovers quickly, needing to see what else he could say to provoke the other man into getting what they both wanted. Even with his head tilted back, Sam forces his eyes to Dannyâs, a mischievous smile playing across his lips. âIs that gonna be a problem?âÂ
âNo.â Dannyâs grip loosens, and Sam takes the opportunity to lean closer to him, his gaze alternating between the other manâs lips and eyes. Â
âDo you have protection?â Â
âYeah.âÂ
âThen why donât you go on and fuck me already?â Â
âWhy donât you shut the fuck up and be patient?â Dannyâs tone is low and sultry, surprising Sam when his hand finds his neck, applying the slightest amount of pressure as he locks his eyes on Samâs. Â
âMaybe I would if you didnât take so goddamn long.â Sam practically pants the words out, fearing that Danny would mistake his anticipatory shivers as those of fear. But beneath the steeled expression on his face, Dannyâs eyes were still just as soft and warm as they had been when they were dancing. Before he knows it, Dannyâs hands leave Samâs skin and find the button of his jeans, his expression unfaltering.Â
âTake these off.â Although he was embarrassed to admit it, the second the words leave Dannyâs mouth, Sam kicks off his shoes, trying not to seem too eager as he pulls his jeans off. âGet on the bed.âÂ
Positioning himself in the center of the bed, Sam props himself up on his elbows as he looks up at Danny, feeling too-exposed in just his briefs. âFucking finally.âÂ
Just as he had begun to get his hopes up, Danny crushes them, offering Sam a sly smirk and leaving him to retrieve what appeared to be a square of fabric. âMaybe this will keep you quiet.â Sam has mere seconds to catch a glimpse of it, realizing that it in fact a grey handkerchief before Danny folds it into a strip, pressing it against Samâs lips until he has no choice but to open his mouth. His mind goes blank as he locks his eyes on Dannyâs concentrated expression, the other man focused on tying it behind his head, careful not to catch or pull any stray hairs. Dannyâs lips find the soft skin of Samâs neck as soon as the handkerchief is secure, slotting himself between his legs and grinding his hips into Samâs.Â
Sam doesnât even know what he was trying to say as a moan leaves his lips, his words muffled by the fabric between his teeth. At the sound, Danny lightly nips his skin, soothing it with his tongue quickly before setting in on working a mark onto his neck. Â As his mouth moves up, towards his jaw, Samâs eyes nearly roll back when Danny finds an especially sensitive spot. Paired with the steady pace of Dannyâs hips pleasure courses through him, but itâs not long before Sam feels frustration begin to take seed within him. I just- need him to fuck me. I canât take this any longer. Â
Attempting to make another snippy comment about how long he was taking, it comes off more as a needy whine, catching Dannyâs attention and causing him to lean back. The second Dannyâs eyes meet his, Sam focuses all the words he wanted to say into his pleading gaze, not caring if it made him look pathetic. For a moment, he canât tell if Danny would give in yet as the other man brings his hand up to Samâs jaw, dragging the pad of his thumb across his bottom lip with an unreadable expression. âDo you want me to, what did you say again? âGo on and fuck you alreadyâ?âÂ
Nodding frantically, Samâs embarrassment is forgotten almost instantly at Dannyâs wolfish grin, and the other man slowly grinds his hips down one last time before leaving Sam to close his door. His confusion only lasts a moment before Danny turns towards his dresser, quickly finding a condom and bottle of lube. Tossing them at Samâs side, Danny sheds his boots and jeans before climbing back onto the bed, kneeling between his legs as he pulls all but his bangs back into a loose bun at the crown of his head. As the other manâs hands begin to wander up, over his waistband and continuing to his sides, Sam was sure that Danny could hear how loud his heart was beating, pounding in his skull with anticipation. Â
âTap me three times if you want me to stop, ok?â His eyes find Samâs, and even through the glaze of his high, Dannyâs still shone with a deep seriousness at his words, waiting for Sam to respond. Offering him a small nod and a light squeeze to his forearm hoping that it came off as reassuring, Sam melts at the expression of care on Dannyâs face, somehow further relaxing into the mattress. Lowering his body again to whisper his words into Samâs ear, Sam fights the urge to squirm underneath him as a stray curl tickles his cheek, Dannyâs warm breath fanning across his skin and sending shivers down his spine. âYou look so good like this.â Â
Sam lets out another whine, and it slowly transforms into a deep groan as he bucks his hips up to meet Dannyâs. His skin is set alight with a raging fire when Danny drags his hands down Samâs sides, his lips trailing across his neck and down to his chest before moving to his stomach. Toying with the edge of his waistband, Danny meets Samâs eyes, his expression full of pure want, yet still serious and full of care nonetheless. âCan I take these off?âÂ
Once again, Sam responds with a sharp nod, his anticipation consuming his mind entirely. As the other man slowly pulls his briefs off, quickly finding his place between Samâs legs, his right hand comes up to grip Samâs thigh. Moving his left arm over Samâs leg, Dannyâs forearm rests gently on the arch of his hip bone, grasping Sam in his hand. Pumping up and down a few times, the friction causes Sam to wince, and Danny finally brings his lips to circle his tip delicately. Even though his head had fallen back to rest on the pillow, his eyes barely open and looking up at the posters on the ceiling above him, Sam could still feel Dannyâs gaze trained on him as he ever so slightly bobs his head up and down.Â
The movement is quick, the feeling fleeting before Danny removes his mouth again, but itâs enough to make Samâs back arch off the bed, eliciting a breathy moan that transforms into a whine at the loss of contact. Before he knows it, Danny completely sinks down onto him, and the sound that leaves Samâs mouth is filthy as his eyes roll to the back of his head. When Danny sets a steady pace, Samâs hands find his hair, doing his best not to ruin the bun as he grasps at the curls. Faintly recognizing the sound of Danny uncapping the lube, he feels every muscle in his body tense with exhilaration at what he guessed was to come. Circling Samâs entrance with a fingertip, Danny keeps his pace steady as his mouth moves up and down before slowly pressing his middle finger into him. Â
Thankful that his dignity had left him long ago and that the handkerchief muffled the volume of his moan, Sam is overcome with pleasure, his mind blank and body numb from it as Dannyâs mouth and hand move in synchronicity. Danny adds a second finger, bringing a whimper from Sam as he fears he would finish too fast if the other man didnât pick his pace up. After a few minutes, each one lasting an eternity to Sam as he writhes on the bed grasping onto anything that would help him last longer, Dannyâs pointer finger joins the other two on his next thrust. Ripping Dannyâs head away, Sam feels a slight tinge of guilt at his hiss of pain, having used his grip in the other manâs hair to take himself out of his mouth. Â
âToo much?â Danny removes his fingers, clearly misunderstanding the reason for Samâs intervention. Roughly shaking his head, Sam arches his back, desperately trying to press himself back down onto Dannyâs fingers. Quickly understanding exactly what Sam wanted, Danny leans back, wiping his hand on the blanket beneath them before shedding his own boxers. Well- now I know why he took so long with prep- Jesus fuck. Watching intently as Danny rolls the condom on, Sam feels Dannyâs eyes trained directly on him, too far gone to care about getting âcaughtâ staring. Letting out a quiet groan at the contact as he spreads the lube over his dick, Danny places his left hand just above Samâs shoulder, holding himself up as he presses his tip against Samâs entrance. Â
Finally meeting Dannyâs eyes, his heart skips a beat as Sam takes in his tender gaze, overcome with a need so strong that he didnât know what to do with himself. Resting his hands on Dannyâs hips, he offers a gentle, almost desperate squeeze, trying to pull his body closer. Sam barely has time to catch the way Dannyâs mouth falls open ever so slightly before his own eyes roll back, lost within his satisfaction of finally getting what he wanted. Whimpering as Danny buries himself completely in him, Samâs back arches off the bed, pressing his now-neglected dick between their stomachs for any relief. To Samâs dismay, Danny quickly pushes his hips back down to the bed, his thrusts still steady and inching Sam towards his high.Â
But before he can complain at the loss of contact, Dannyâs hand wraps around Samâs cock, covered in lube and pumping in time with his hips. He knew he was done for when Danny drops to his elbow, bracing himself against the mattress beside Samâs head as his lips find the sensitive skin of his neck. With his hands splaying across the expanse of Dannyâs broad shoulders, Sam digs his nails into the muscle, his last-ditch effort at keeping himself from reaching his tipping point. Danny sinks his teeth into the top of Samâs shoulder in retaliation, his thrusts becoming faster and rougher as he works marks onto his skin. If heâs the reason Iâm forced to wear turtlenecks for the next week, I'm gonna be so mad. Â
âYou feel so good, baby.â The words are enough to make Sam forget all previous concern of being left with too visible hickeys, and he canât push away the feeling growing within him any longer as he finally topples over the edge, his release coating his stomach with a pornographic moan. Despite the overstimulation creeping into his body, Sam holds on for just a few moments longer, feeling the other manâs pace beginning to falter as he too neared his high. It only takes a few more thrusts for Dannyâs mouth to fall open, his eyes squeezing shut as he tries to carry himself through it. Â
Dannyâs hand relaxes around Sam, drifting lazily to his hip as his forehead drops to rest on Samâs shoulder. After taking a few deep breaths, Danny pulls himself from Sam with a hiss before wiping his hand on the blanket and untying the handkerchief. He places a gentle kiss to Samâs lips, and the way that Danny looks down at him in the moments following steals Samâs breath entirely. Although he was still bewildered at Dannyâs continuing care, it was that one look that kept Sam from feeling nervous even as the other man got up. Â
âDo you want to go clean up first, Sammy?â Despite the fact that he was putting the lube away and discarding their condom, Dannyâs tone was casually comfortable, as if they hadnât done what they just did. Â
âUh no, itâs ok. I need a minute.âÂ
âThatâs alright.â Grabbing his boxers, Danny finds Samâs side again, offering his thigh a gentle squeeze. âYou ok? Do you need anything?â Â
Sam canât help the smile that finds his lips, waving Danny away to further âproveâ that it was ok for him to go. âNo, no. Itâs alright.â Â
Putting his boxers back on, Danny offers Sam one last small, playful smile, and it doesnât take long for Sam to realize just why it carried a hint of amusement. âDonât go anywhere.â Snorting at the stupid joke, Sam lets himself completely relax onto the bed and he closes his eyes as the door creaks open and closed. Allowing himself a few more deep breaths, Sam rips his eyes open again, propping himself up on his elbows as he takes in his surroundings. Despite the slight spike of panic in his chest remembering just who and what Danny was, he pushes the thoughts to the side, knowing that his rockstar truly was different. This wouldnât be some one-night stand; no, Danny had shown him too much care for it to be nothing more than a quick fuck. Or at least he hoped so.Â
Sam forces himself to move despite the exhaustion riddling his body, and he uses the blanket below him to wipe what he can from his stomach. Gotta remember to shower tomorrow morning. Iâm too tired to care right now andâll get more in the bathroom in a minute. Realizing that Danny could walk back in at any moment, Sam gets up, finding his briefs and slipping them on quickly. Guilt flares in his chest as he looks back at the blanket, realizing just how large of a mess they had made of it, and he carefully folds it up just in time for the door to creak open again. Â
Sam feels heat rush to his cheeks as he turns towards Danny, the blanket in hand as he looks everywhere except Dannyâs eyes. âWe uh- got a little on the blanket...âÂ
Only laughing in response, Danny closes the distance between them to take the fabric, throwing it into a hamper with barely a glance over. âDonât worry about it, thatâs why itâs there.âÂ
What? âSo, you knew youâd go home with someone tonight?â Please say no.Â
âA man can hope.â Â
Unable to help the disappointment welling up in the pit of his stomach, Sam only offers him a small nod, his eyes to the floor. âDo you have a shirt I can borrow?âÂ
âUh, yeah. One sec.â Danny roots around in his dresser for a moment before pulling out a ball of fabric, handing it to Sam with an embarrassed look. âI swear itâs clean, I just... hadnât gotten around to folding it yet.â Just as Sam turns to leave, Dannyâs voice stops him in his tracks, and he brings his gaze back up to meet the other manâs eyes. âI was just joking by the way. I donât keep a blanket on the bed just in case I bring someone home. To be honest, itâs only there cause sometimes I donât like the feeling of my comforter and I need to switch to a different texture.â Letting out a nervous, sheepish laugh, Danny rubs the back of his neck, and Sam notices for the first time that he had cleaned up his bun for sleep. âThis isnât normal for me- I donât usually take people home right after meeting them. I donât sleep around if thatâs what youâre worried about, and I'm- I'm sorry if i made you feel like thatâs just what this was.âÂ
âItâs alright, Danny.â Reaching out to gently place his hand on the other manâs shoulder, Sam offers him a soft smile. âThank you for the clarification, though.â Unravelling the shirt to reveal a very large Pink Floyd band tee, Samâs smile only grows as his eyes dart up to Danny. âYou like them too?âÂ
âHell yeah, The Wall is one of my favorite albums.âÂ
âThen Iâd say that makes you a man with very good music taste.â Slipping the shirt on, Sam offers Danny a light kiss to his cheek before making his way towards the door. âIâm gonna go clean up. Where's the bathroom again?âÂ
âRight across the hall. We should be the only ones home right now.â Â
Offering him a small smile and a quiet âthanksâ, Sam leaves the room as quiet as he can, slipping into the bathroom quickly and bracing his back against the door after locking it. Covering his face with his hands as if there were anyone else in the room to see his lopsided grin, Sam tries to compose himself. Fuck I feel like a stupid teenager with a crush. What is it about this guy? Although he knew he would be embarrassed to admit it, Sam cleans up as fast as he can while still being thorough, eager to get back to his rockstarâs arms. Flicking the light off as he leaves, Sam finds that Danny had put on a pair of red flannel sleep pants, now busy at his bed, moving the comforter aside and rearranging the pillows to accommodate for two.Â
Noticing Sam as he grabbed the ashtray and lighter again, Danny offers him a smile as Sam closes the door behind them. âWanna smoke a little before sleeping?â Making his way over to his bed again, Danny plops down on the edge of the mattress, patting the space beside him invitingly.Â
âYeah, thanks.â Sam offers him a lazy smile as he joins him on the bed, watching as the other man relights the tip and takes a long drag. When Danny holds it out for Sam, he doesnât take it, simply leaning forward until his lips brush against his fingertips and inhaling. Seeing that Danny had blown his smoke out the still cracked window, Sam does the same, realizing the room was quieter than he remembered it to be. âThe music stopped.âÂ
Taking another hit, Danny repeats his motions for Sam, smiling as his eyes remain on Samâs lips. âI put it away. Not sure how long it was looping on the run-out groove before I stopped it.â Absentmindedly running his fingers though his hair, Sam catches a knot and winces slightly as he moves his other hand to untangle it. âWant me to braid it? So it doesnât tangle in the night.âÂ
âYou know how to braid hair?âÂ
Danny gives the joint to Sam alongside the ashtray, leaving him to grab a hair tie off his dresser before plopping back down onto the bed. âI have a younger sister and have been growing my hair out since I moved outta Michigan, of course I know how to braid. Turn around please.â Moving to sit crisscross in front of the other man before brushing his hair back with his free hand, Sam lets his eyes close as Danny gently combs through his hair with his fingers. Bringing the filter to his lips, Sam takes one last, long hit before extinguishing the faint glow on the ceramic in his hand. After a few seconds, Sam exhales the smoke, the comforting feeling of Danny carefully weaving his hair into a clean braid and the weed coursing through his system lulling him towards sleep.Â
Before he knows it, Danny offers him a light kiss on the back of his shoulder, giving the other a brief squeeze as he takes the ashtray from Sam. Leaving only to return it to his dresser and unplug the lights, Danny maneuvers around Sam to get to the side of the bed closest to the wall, slipping under the covers and holding the comforter up for him. Sam hesitates only for a moment before turning to face Danny as he lays down, using the other manâs outstretched bicep as a pillow, but still unsure on just how much contact Danny was alright with. As if he had read his mind, Danny lowers the comforter over their bodies, pulling Sam flush against him before relaxing into the mattress. Â
âIâd like to take you on a real date sometime, if thatâs alright.âÂ
âIâd love that, Danny.â Tilting his face upwards, Sam catches Dannyâs lips, indulging himself in one last, slow kiss before burying his face into the other manâs neck with a heavy sigh. Sam all but melts against the other man, the warmth radiating from his skin only drawing him in more. Â
Already falling asleep, Dannyâs voice rips Sam back to near consciousness, his amused tone soft in the quiet of the night. âDid I end up being worth your time?â Â
Although he knew Danny couldnât see his face, a tired grin splits Samâs lips, and he presses his body closer as he lets himself to drift towards sleep once more. âYeah, yeah you did.âÂ

Someone New - Hozier
"Would things be easier if there was a right way?
Honey there is no right way,
And so I fall in love a little ol' little bit
everyday with someone new."
âText me later?â She whispers against my lips, glancing up at me.Â
My hand holds the base of her neck, kissing her again before muttering back, âSure.â Feeling her hands slide down my bare chest before backing up, I watch her eyes drift down to the waistband of my sweatpants before she looks back up at me.Â
âBye, Danny,â she says, biting her lip gently as she goes to walk away. I watch her get into her car, sending her a little wave before closing the door behind me, leaning my back against it, and letting my head drop forward.Â
âNo chance,â I breathe out.Â
She wasnât the worst person Iâve ever gone out with, but thereâs no way Iâm going out with her again. Maybe hook up with, but nothing more than that. Â She was nice, definitely hot, but there was no real connection other than the fact she was more than ready to climb me like a tree.Â
I swear Iâve gone out with every last girl in this city and just have not found someone who piques my interest. Sure, itâs nice just to get to know people and at least get out of the house for a little bit, but it would be nice to find someone who was worth keeping around.Â
The truth is, I havenât really dated anybody seriously since Melody. Itâs been years since we broke up, and it feels like Iâve been cursed with something because nothing ever sticks like she did. We were friends as kids. She spent a lot of time around Sam and Me, which also meant with his brothers. Growing up in smaller towns in Maine typically meant keeping the same friend group for a while.Â
We all spent most of our free time together. She was never bothered by being the only girl unless someone had a girlfriend at the timeâ but even that was few and far between. It was less than shocking for everyone else to discover that we started dating at the time; I donât think we were good at hiding our feelings for each other, but to be fair, we were also maybe fourteen years old.Â
She was the first girl I ever had feelings for like that. My first real kiss, the only date I had for school dances, who I lost my virâ you get the point. We were inseparable until it came time for college. She had bigger plans than I did, and I wouldnât hold her back from them. I always wanted her to pursue her dreams because she deserved it.Â
Unfortunately, we didnât last. But itâs fine because I know that even though it took a while to move on, it was probably for the best. I think. I try to not dwell on it too much, despite what Sam would tell you. I should call him.Â
âWell, hello there, Daniel,â his voice rings through the phone. We spend a few minutes going on about our usual banter before I fill him in on the girl who just left. Which is really just a lot of humming and hawing from my end about whether or not I think it would be worth it to see her again.Â
âI donât think we would have anything to talk about,â I tell him.Â
Sam laughs before saying, âYour nickname is really showing right about now, One Date Daniel.â Itâs a fun nickname that theyâve coined over the yearsâby they, I mean he started it, but naturally, the twins picked up on it, and now I hear it all too often.Â
âWeâve gone through this,â I breathe out. âIâm not trying to find the flaws in these girls; they just .. present them quickly.âÂ
Heâs quick to rebuttal with, âIt seems like the flaw is always that they arenât MââÂ
âShut up, itâs not that,â I cut him off.Â
âWell, it just seems that you find something wrong with all of them, and she was the only one you never complained about.âÂ
âMaybe I just need to stop trying to date in Portland,â I pitch. âIâm sure there are plenty of options outside of the city.âÂ
âWhatever helps you sleep at night, Daniel,â he sighs. âAll I know is that when I met Birdie..âÂ
And then I zoned out.Â
I love that Sam found someone and specifically someone who is willing to put up with his shit every day. Sheâs one of Godâs strongest soldiers, for real. Â But dear god, the sheer amount of times that our conversations have segued into some lecture where he tells me about how great Willa is and why I should listen to his adviceâ despite the number of times Iâve heard her tell him to stop meddling in other people's lives.Â
Heâs convinced that I find problems with any date because they arenât Melody. I donât think thatâs the issue, personally, but I canât seem to make him agree with me. I just know what Iâm looking for in a woman, and they just donât typically fit that, which is okay. Today wasnât my best look. I try not to have too many one-night stands, but whatâs a guy to do when he canât find someone interesting enough to keep around? Sleep with the hot ones. Â
âMhm,â I hum back to whatever Sam told me. Iâm sure Iâve heard it all before.Â
He sighs on the other end of the call, breathing out, âWell, do you have to work tonight?âÂ
âI do, why?âÂ
âI donât think Bird and I have plans later, so maybe I can swing by for a little bit.âÂ
Laughing quietly to myself, âIf you want, no pressure.âÂ
Falling back into the couch, I scroll on my phone for a bit, before turning on the TV. Watching whatever mindless thing comes on because itâs too early in the day for it to be anything interesting.Â
Me: I should have told you to bring my favorite lady overÂ
Sam: Â you know sheâs MY dog right?
Me: she and I havenât spent time together in a little while, I miss herÂ
Sam: maybe you can keep her this weekend so birdie and I can go do somethingÂ
Penny is the greatest decision Sam has made in a while, besides finding a girlfriend, apparently. Sheâs such a good dog, and I still personally believe that Iâm her favorite human, but I wonât say that to Sam. Iâm usually his go-to for babysitting her when he needs it, which Iâd like to think is because she and I have fun together, but Iâm almost positive itâs because the twins live together, and he doesnât want to invade their space.Â
Regardless of the reason, I love it when I get to steal her for a day or twoâ not that I donât enjoy being alone. Sometimes, it is nice to have someone else here, even if that someone hogs my entire bed when we sleep.Â
Once I convince myself to get up, I know I need to run and do a few errands before going to the bar. I pull my hair up into a bun, high on my head. Pulling on a basic outfit since Iâll probably just go straight to work after Iâm done. I stare at myself in my mirror for all of a few seconds before Iâm off to be productive, hopefully.Â
I live close enough to the bar but just far enough away that I typically will drive to just spare myself walking home late at night. Not that the area is terrible, but two in the morning makes for a very tired walk home, especially when it could be a five-minute drive.Â
I find a spot close enough to the bar, leaving my car there to just walk to a few places, but starting with the local coffee shop I prefer. Working in this area has been a blessing and a curse because I frequent the same places enough that the employees know who I am, but living around here makes it uncomfortable sometimes. Itâs not often that I run into someone I went out with, but every once in a while, they make an appearance, and I canât even be mad because we both live around here.Â
Today is one of those days.Â
I keep my eyes locked on my phone as I pretend to look at something, but in reality, Iâm just scrolling through my texts with Sam. But a girl that I went with a few weeks ago is sitting in the corner, and I can feel her stare burning a hole in the back of my head. It was another case in which she was very nice, but there just wasnât anything there.Â
I ordered my drink and stood where I wouldnât make awkward eye contact with her while I waited for my drink. I could just say hello. No, it would get weird.Â
Me: youâre not going to believe whoâs hereÂ
Sam: đ
Me: remember the girl from a few weeks ago?Â
Me: she was nice but literally nothing to talk about?
Sam: uhhh.. SureÂ
Me: sheâs sitting 30 feet away from me and these baristas are taking FOREVER
Sam: LMFAOÂ
âDanny!â one of the baristas yelled as they set my coffee at the end of the counter. Well, thereâs no pretending it isnât me now, grabbing it, glancing over to the set of eyes that I could feel staring the entire time, and shooting her a tight-lipped smile. I watch as she just rolls her eyes as I push open the door to leave. Oops.
I spent a little over an hour running to a few shops that I need to pick things up from and then running everything back to my car. Sliding my phone from my pocket, I still have an hour and a half before I need to be there. Debating on whether or not I want to grab something to eat, I make the executive decision to stop at the bar; maybe the boys will want food, too. Â
Working in this area is definitely more fun than I anticipated. To be honest, anything is more fun than working at the shipyard. Getting to watch people stumble late at night on the cobblestone street across from us is one of my favorite things about having to linger near the door. Those poor girls in their high heels had no idea what would happen to them when they attempted to walk down that street.Â
The daytime is pretty calm. We just witnessed a lot of tourists during the summer, which has made a lot of evenings go by with a ton of people coming in because other bars were packed. Not that Jake didnât do a good job with this one, but itâs not necessarily the most modern bar in the area. The aesthetic being very pirate and a bit dark because we are like half way into a basement doesnât help.Â
Seeing the sign as I slowly make my way down the street. Pulling open the door to the bar, I immediately stop in my tracks.Â
Oh my god. Shit. Why is she here? Maybe it isnât her.Â
I stand there quietly and watch her talk to Jake; everything feels quiet. It had been years since weâd seen each other, let alone spoke to each other. I guess I canât blame her. Â It feels like hours that I stood there just watching them before I could convince myself to move. Walking closer to the bar, Jake looks over at me; his eyes widen a bit, bouncing his stare between the two of us like heâs trying to warn me. I just subtly nod my head to acknowledge it.Â
âOh shit- Daniel?â Melody says as sheâs turning around, immediately making eye contact with me.Â
I canât describe the feeling that courses through my body hearing her say my name again. I donât think anything could have prepared me for it. My eyes are fixed on hers as it feels like time has completely stopped. She looks good. I can feel the blood coursing through me as we stare at each other. The silence was deafening.Â
Finally, I uncomfortably choke out, âHah, yes. How are you?âÂ
âA little better now,â she tells me, smiling over at Jake. âNothing like trying to find a job quickly.â No fucking way. Moving my eyes over to Jake, who looks like heâs just seen a ghost and would like to join them at this point.Â
âOh? You uh- live here?â I ask timidly. âI thought you were still in Mass.âÂ
âYeah.. I just moved back in with my dad.â She says, glancing at the ground for a minute. Her voice gets much more quiet when she says, âMy mom uh..passed away not too long ago, and itâs just not feasibleââÂ
I cut her off quickly, âIâm so sorry, I didnât know.â
âNo, itâs okay, why would you?â She waves her hand at me, dismissing everything. She taps the bar a couple of times. âAnyway, I need to get going,â she says, much more lightheartedly, glancing between Jake and myself.Â
âOh yeah, uh-â I spit out quickly. âIt was nice to see you.â Forcing a small smile onto my face despite the pit in my stomach.Â
She smiles softly back at me, saying, âYou too.âÂ
Seeing her smile made me nauseous, but I couldnât let her know that. My eyes shift to Jake, mumbling, âJosh is here?â
He just nods at me silently.Â
I start to walk out back, knowing I need to find him, but hearing her say, âThank you so much, Jake. Youâre a lifesaver.âÂ
This canât be real. She hasnât spoken to me in years, but now weâre going to work together. What the fuck. I can feel my body warm at the thought, fighting the anger that is threatening to come out at this point. Not that itâs a big deal; itâs been so long, and Iâve moved on from it. It just feels like I should have known about this before she just waltzed back into our lives. She couldnât get a job anywhere else in Portland, like how of all places she landed hereâ and then it hits me.Â
Josh told her. Thereâs no other way. This bar is not one to scream, âWomen, come in!â I tilt my head, feeling my neck crack slightly, before tilting it the opposite way so I can see the back room door.Â
âJosh, why do I feel like youâre behind this?â I ask, rounding the corner into the back room. Thereâs no chance he canât tell that Iâm irritated at this point.Â
He asks, âWhatever do you mean?â The sing-song tone of his voice isnât going to save the situation this time.Â
âWhat did you do?â My voice is low as I question him.Â
He looks over at me, letting out, âShe needed a job, and Jake obviously needs more help.âÂ
My head rolls back as I let out a deep sigh. This canât be real right now.Â
âSo, she definitely works here now?âÂ
The uncomfortable smile he shoots me is enough, but he weakly says, â.. is that a problem?âÂ
It isnât necessarily a problem, but we did go years without speaking and ended on not the greatest of terms. Itâs a long story. To just resume life as if nothing happened and work together, I donât know how Iâm supposed to just be around her a few nights a week like that.Â
âNo,â I breathe out. âItâll be fine; I just wasnât anticipating seeing her.âÂ
Weâre both adults now, and we should be able to function around each other without things being weird; I mean, itâs been so long that maybe sheâs also past it. Â
I can hear the sound of Jake walking towards us, his boots will always sell him out; thankfully it sounds like only heâs coming, so thatâs a relief.Â
âHey bud,â his voice is just above a whisper. âI didnât realize what time it was; I would have warned you.â The look on his face alone tells me that he feels incredibly guilty.Â
I donât think a warning at this point would have even helped.Â
I mindlessly crack my knuckles, looking over to him, âItâs okay.âÂ
âIf it helps,â he starts. âShe isnât starting until next week.â The smile on his face seems uncomfortable as if he desperately wants to make things better.Â
At least I donât have to work with her right away.Â
âPlus, sheâll be bartending with me. So, you wonât really have to interact with her much if you donât want to!â Josh interjects in an attempt to make things better.Â
If I know anything about either of them, itâs that the last thing they want to do is watch a friend struggle. Iâve been close enough with their whole family to know this. Iâm sure that whenever Josh spoke to her, he probably just felt for her and knew that Jake wouldnât say no. I mean, shit, thatâs how I landed my job here.Â
Even though I realistically donât need to be here all that often, itâs not that kind of bar. Jake wanted to get me out of the shipyard because itâs a draining job and once he quit, I was left there to fend for myself. He practically created a job for me and managed to pay me enough to keep me alive. Itâs incredible how much money you save when youâre single and depressed.Â
âThatâs true,â I tell them. âItâll be fine, Iâm sure, but..âÂ
They look at each other and then over to me.Â
âBut what?â Jake caves, asking for the both of them.Â
Itâs shocking to me that neither of them are considering the real issue here, and itâs definitely not Melody and I being in the same room. My hand finds comfort on the back of my neck as I look over to him, âWhoâs going to tell Sam?âÂ

After three days in the hospital bay right by Samâs side after he woke up, and one pre-approved, scripted, full of bullshit victor interview with Claudius, it was finally time to go home. It was time for Danny to take Sam to his new home and hope that it didnât make him regret his decision. His worries had battled with his joy over seeing his family again for the entirety of the train ride, knotting his stomach as he bounced his leg wildly on the ground as his only outlet. Sam had remained still and quiet the entire ride, watching out the window as the sparkling city slowly became tree-covered mountains, his hands picking his cuticles nervously in his lap the only hint to Danny of how he was feeling.
Danny brings his hand to Samâs as he sees the edge of his nail start to bleed, capturing his attention as he pulls it towards him. âYou ok, Sammy?â
âYeah, I- Iâm just nervous is all. Iâm worried theyâll hate me.â
âHate you? Who? Josie and Dave?â Sam only nods as his response, his nerves keeping his entire body tense. âThey wonât hate you, Sammy. I promise. Why would they hate you?â
âBecause Iâm a Career, because of how I treated you in training.â
âBaby, you saved my life, more times than one. I wouldnât be surprised if Davidâs parents tried to adopt you. Youâre part of the family now.â Danny barely registers the new nickname, pushing it to the back of his mind as Sam shows no hint of negativity towards it.
âI am?â Samâs voice breaks as he speaks, and Danny canât help but feel a small pang in his chest as a tear rolls down his cheek.
âOf course you are. You chose to live in 7, youâre one of us now. Like Jake said, as far as the government is concerned, you have always been from 7. Youâll fit right in.â
âRight, a twig like me is gonna âfit right inâ with all the lumberjacks.â Laughing at his own joke, Danny can see his shoulders relax at his reassurances, and he canât help but laugh too as he tries to imagine Sam in the forest swinging a felling axe.
âAwww, Iâm not sure Iâd call you a âtwigâ, Sammy. Youâre about halfway to lumberjack level muscles with what you have from all your sword practice. And we do have other jobs in 7, if you want to work. I know with our winnings we wouldnât have to, but I think I will. Itâll help me feel at home again, like nothingâs changed. Keep my mind away from the games.â
âYeah, Iâd like that. It could help me feel like I fit in, like Iâm not an obviously sore thumb there.â Danny watches his expression drop, knowing his worries had begun to circle in his mind again.
âYou wonât, Sammy, I promise. Theyâre gonna love you.â
âThank you. Can I- can I ask you a question?â
âGo ahead.â
âWhat happened after I passed out? In the arena.â Danny had been dreading the question for days, just waiting for Sam to ask. He didnât want to relive any of it, but he knew that Sam had a right to know, he deserved to know.
Danny takes a deep breath, trying to sort through his memories of the final day in the arena as they jumble around in his head. âI remember I panicked, tried to wake you back up. When you- when you wouldnât, I lost it. I- I completely fell apart. Started screaming, begging for them to save you. Then I heard jet engines above me, and they were lowering Peacekeepers down towards us on a small platform. They got us both on and then brought us back up and- and when we got into the jet they tried to take you away from me. I fought as hard as I could to stay with you, Sammy, I swear.â Tears come to Dannyâs eyes as he feels the utter terror he had felt when they had ripped him away from Sam, even though he knew now that it had been to help him.
âBut I wouldnât stop fighting them, I didnât know what they were gonna do to you so they- they tased me. I think I passed out after that because the next thing I knew, I was in a hospital bed but- but before I did, I saw them rush you over to some nurses who started trying to save you. I was just praying that they could.â Dannyâs voice breaks as he finishes, finally meeting Samâs eyes as his tears roll down his cheeks.
âDanny, love-â Sam pulls him towards himself without another word, moving his hands to Dannyâs back to rub soothing circles into it. Danny was sure he could feel how fast his heart was beating, his body choosing to ignore the fact that they were both safe now, that everything had worked out in the end. âIâm sorry, Iâm so sorry.â
âItâs alright, youâre safe now. Thatâs all that matters to me.â Danny pulls away to look at Sam, the other man wiping his tears from his cheeks for him as warmth blooms in his chest. Yeah, Iâm in love with him. âLike I said, I would do it all again if it meant that you got out of that arena alive.â
Sam places a gentle kiss to his lips, intertwining their fingers as they feel the train slow beneath them. âI love you, Danny.â
âI love you too, Sam.â As the train comes to a stop, Danny sees Samâs nerves flash across his face as he looks out the window, taking a deep, grounding breath. âYou ready?â
âGuess thereâs only one way to find out.â They both stand, making their way through the compartment until they reach the doors, their hands intertwined as they step off the train.
This time, no Peacekeepers or throngs of people meet them, the air around them quiet and still as the fresh mountain air greets Dannyâs lungs. Iâm home, Iâm really home. We made it. They can take no more than two steps before a woman rushes towards them, her familiar sandy blond hair bringing tears to Dannyâs eyes as she tackles him in a hug. âLuna?â
âHey kid, you miss me?â Even though he couldnât see her face, her voice cracks as she speaks, and Danny guesses that she was crying, not stopping his own tears as they trail down his cheeks.
âMore than you know.â
âIâm so fucking glad to see you.â As she pulls away, grief and happiness mix in her expression, and it doesnât take long for Danny to guess what her next words were. Moving her hands up to cradle Dannyâs jaw, her eyes lock on his, her tone genuine as her next words hit Danny like a punch. âIt wasnât your fault, kid. You were the best ally in there she could have had, and I thank you for doing as much as you did for keeping her safe.â
But I couldnât do enough. âI- I know. I canât help but feel guilty though, about what I- what I did.â
âAnd that is completely normal. She would have suffered, we both know the injury, we know the outcome. You did her a kindness in there, Daniel. You are not a monster.â
âI know, I know- thank you.â He wasnât lying when he said he knew. In the end, he would rather have done what he did than let her suffering drag out. She didnât deserve that, didnât deserve to die in the games. But she had, and Danny knew there would never be a day that went by that he wouldnât think of her.
âAnd you-â Panic flares in Dannyâs chest as Luna turns her attention to Sam, even though he knew she would never do anything to hurt him. Surprise flashes across Samâs face as she throws her arms around him, pulling him into a hug that he hesitates to reciprocate. âThank you for saving his life. They would have never let you both out alive if he had been the one that knife hit. I could have never convinced the President the way your brother did.â
Samâs left speechless at her words, tears coming to his eyes at the immediate kindness Luna had shown him. As she pulls away, all three wipe the tears from their cheeks as they compose themselves again. âAlright, letâs get you home. Theyâve already taken your belongings to the victorâs village, Samâs from 1 as well. Your sister is still with the Welschâs, so Iâll take you there first.â
Josie. Dave. He was so close to seeing his family again, and he tries not to walk too fast as Luna leads them through his district, his heart hammering in his chest the entire time. As Davidâs house comes into view, he can barely make out the form of his best friend and sister sitting on their small porch. Dannyâs mind blanks as he breaks into a sprint, his boots on the gravel capturing the twoâs attention as Josie stands, rushing towards him immediately. She all but jumps into his arms the second they meet, neither caring that she was too big for him to pick up as her arms circle his neck.
âYou came back. Just like you said you would.â Her words are muffled as she sobs them out, and in that second, Danny knew that everything he had done in the arena had been worth it. He had survived to see his sister, his family again, and that was all that mattered.
âI promised I would, didnât I? You canât get rid of me that easy.â Both their laughs are wet from their tears, saying nothing more as they hold the other, their nerves and fears disappearing now that they were reunited. As Danny feels her arms loosen, he sets her down as Dave finds his side, immediately embracing the other as Danny catches the glint of tears on the other manâs cheeks. Dave never cries, I donât think Iâve ever seen him cry.
âI donât think Iâve ever been happier to see you, Danny boy. Thank you for coming back to us.â
âThanks for taking care of Josie for me.â As Dave releases him, he keeps his hand on the back of Dannyâs neck as their eyes lock, both full of tears and joy at seeing the other again.
âAnything for you, brother.â Dave slaps his back gently before turning his attention to Sam as he realizes they werenât alone. âYou gonna introduce us to your friend, or did the games take away your manners?â
Danny turns towards Sam, feeling slightly guilty to see him awkwardly standing a few feet away from them, silently observing the reunions. âDave, Josie, this is Sam. Heâs my-â Heâs my what? Boyfriend? Weâve both said we love each other but we havenât gotten the chance to label anything. Danny pushes the thought from his mind as he intertwines their fingers, seeing understanding pass across both Dave and Josieâs faces. âHeâs gonna be living here with us now, in 7. He saved my life. I wouldnât have made it back here if not for him.â
Danny can see Sam melt at his words, but his attention turns to Josie as she rushes forward, her arms circling his body. âThank you, Sam.â The glint of Samâs tears catch the light of the setting sun as he lets go of Dannyâs hand to wrap his arms around her, his fears visibly dissolving as she hugs him.
âOf course.â As Josie releases him, Dave steps up to hug him too, just as they had done with Danny.
âCanât begin to thank you enough. Josie didnât see it but I did, I saw everything that you did for Dan. Thank you for getting him home to us.â
Dannyâs heart breaks in the best way as he watches the interaction. This is it, this is my family. This gets to be my life. All of us, together. Danny catches Daveâs arm as he pulls away from Sam, dropping his voice as Josie sets in on asking Sam questions about himself.
âHey man, again, thank you for looking after Josie. I want to- I want to do something for your family, as a thank you.â
âWhatever you have in mind, we donât need it. Seriously, it was honestly more helpful having her around, she never hesitated to help out around the house or with my younger siblings. It was nothing.â
âIt wasnât nothing, David. You know how much she means to me, and I know that if I hadnât- if I hadnât made it back, you would have kept looking after her. Please, your family has done so much to help us, now itâs my turn to return the favor.â Danny sees hesitation pass across Daveâs face, but it was slowly breaking as he considered the offer. âTalk more about it tomorrow?â
âYeah, yeah sounds good.â The second they rejoin their small group, Josieâs attention goes back to Danny.
âYou cut your hair.â
He feels a pang in his chest at the reminder, pain flaring in his chest even though he knew that she meant nothing by it. âYeah, figured I needed a change. Is it bad?â
âNo.â She smiles at him as she reaches up to feel the short curls, her touch gentle as she looks him over. âIt looks good, suits you.â
âThanks, but I canât take too much credit. Sammy here was the one that helped me cut it, surprised he didnât mess it up considering he was using a hunting knife.â A dagger. That you stole from another tribute after sending the blade of your axe into her chin. But Josie can never know that, she can never find out the things you did to survive. A blush falls across Samâs cheeks as Danny snakes his hand across his lower back, pulling him back towards their group and the conversation. Silence passes over them all as their exhaustion catches up to them, the mental and emotional toll the last few weeks had put on them hitting them all at once. Dave finally breaks the silence as Josie fails to contain a yawn.
âWell as much as Iâve loved to see you again, and meet you, Sam, I think I should let you guys settle into your new place. Iâm gonna miss having you guys right next door, though. Donât be a stranger.â Danny wraps his arms around Dave to hug him goodbye, almost laughing at his words. He too would miss having his best friend right next door, but he knew that he would visit them often. They were his family, they had done so much for Josie and him that he could never let them go.
âDonât worry, we wonât. See you tomorrow, Dave.â
âSee ya.â Dave offers one last light slap to his back before walking away as Luna takes the cue that it was time for her to re-insert herself into the conversation.
âFollow me, Iâll show you guys to your new place.â
Realization hits him as they begin to walk as Danny remembers that his sister and Luna had probably never met before. âJosie, this is Luna, she was my mentor. Sheâs another reason I got to come back here.â
âDonât give me so much credit, all I did was convince a few rich people to send you supplies.â
âAnd they helped us both more than you know.â Dannyâs tone is genuine, catching her off guard as her steps slightly falter, seeing her quickly brush a tear away as they walk. It isnât long until they finally reach the only part of town Danny had never seen with his own eyes: the victorâs village. The streets are quiet and empty as a few houses are scattered around them, nothing as fancy as they had in The Garden, but all of them had two floors, which is more than he could say about most of the houses in their District.
She stops in front of one of them, sandwiched in between two other identical ones. Pointing to the house to the right of it, she briefly explains. âThat one is mine, if you ever need anything, please come over. Even if itâs just to say hi. All the other houses here are empty, so itâll be nice to have neighbors again.â She gestures to the one in front of them, beginning to walk towards it. âThis oneâs yours, I told Danny and Sam earlier that they have already moved your things in, but if you need help rearranging or moving things around, let me know.â Her hand pauses on the doorknob as she looks back at the three of them, finally clicking the door open as she stands back. âThis is where I leave you guys. Like I said if you need anything, Iâm right next door.â
She leaves them without another word, squeezing Dannyâs shoulder gently as she passes them before heading towards her own house. Danny feels as if heâs frozen in place as Josie makes her way inside, her eyes wide as she took in how much nicer everything was compared to their old house.
âYou ok?â Samâs hand finds Dannyâs as he asks, his voice gentle and patient as he waits.
âYeah- yeah, itâs just- just a lot of change.â
âI get it. We can stay out here for as long as you need.â
That undeniable warm feeling blooms in Dannyâs chest as he squeezes Samâs hand gently, his body lighting up as he feels the other man do the same. âThank you.â Taking a deep breath, he turns his focus back to the open door, his sister gone to explore the new house as they stood there. âOk, Iâm ready.â He canât even begin to describe the feeling that spreads through him as he crosses the threshold with Sam by his side, still in awe that they now had a life together. This is our home. All of us.
âDanny, Danny!â Josie rushes down the stairs, joy overtaking her face as she grins. âI get my own room! Thereâs only one bed in the room all my stuff is in!â
âThatâs great, kid!â Danny canât keep the smile from his face at how happy she was. He knew she hadnât minded sharing a room with him when that was their only option, but he also knew she wanted one of her own. Especially now that Sam was living with them, he was glad to have the privacy and separation.
âThereâs only two rooms though. Is Sam sharing one with you now?â
âYeah, he is. Like I said, heâs living with us now. Is that ok?â
âDanny, I donât care that heâs your boyfriend.â Boyfriend. Dannyâs stomach flips at her words, trying not to look at Sam to see his reaction. âDo you love him?â
âYeah, yeah I do.â
âThen of course I donât care if he lives with us or shares a room with you. I just donât want to-â Her face scrunches in disgust as she looks between them, confusing Danny momentarily before she continues. âHear anything.â
Oh my fucking god, just kill me now. Danny feels his cheeks heat as Sam begins to laugh beside him, too embarrassed to try to say anything until finally, his words find him. âWe wonât- you wonât- you wonât, I promise.â As a somewhat related thought crosses his mind, he makes his way over to Josie, trying to meet her eyes. âAnd I- I want to warn you that- sometimes we might have really bad nightmares, and Iâm sorry if it wakes you up. But if it does, just go back to sleep, you donât have to worry about us. Weâre ok, I promise.â
âBecause of the games?â Her voice is small, tinted with sadness as she looks down at him from the steps.
âYeah, because of the games.â
âWill you tell me about what happened?â
âMaybe someday, kid. Maybe someday. But not now, you donât have to worry about any of it right now because we got through it, weâre home. Alright?â
âAlright.â
Danny can feel tears coming to his eyes, tears he didnât want her to see. âNow keep exploring, I bet you can find some cool stuff both inside and outside of this house.â Heâs relieved as she smiles at him again, darting past him and out the front door without another word, excited to look for new things their new home and neighborhood brought them.
Closing his eyes as he feels his tears trail down his cheeks, warmth fills him when Sam wraps his arms around his stomach, and Danny brings his own hands down to rest on his before Sam places a gentle kiss to his shoulder. âYou ok?â
âYeah, I just- hate having to explain the nightmares to her, but I knew I needed to, even briefly. I donât want her to know what we went through, not for a long time. Never, preferably.â
âI wonât tell her, love.â
âI know you wonât.â Danny turns in his arms, placing a light kiss to his lips as he looks down at him. âThank you.â
They had spent the rest of the day settling in, and Danny had been pleased to find that they had taken the liberty of stocking their fridge and pantry for them as he treated the three of them to the first home cooked meal that he and Sam had had in longer than they could remember; one of his motherâs old recipes, of course. They had finally split ways with his sister after dinner as he and Sam retreated to their bedroom, immediately setting in on trying to sleep.
Instead, they had laid there in silence for two hours, neither able to fall asleep despite their exhaustion. âCâmon, Sammy. I wanna show you something.â The words leave Dannyâs mouth before he can even think them over, finding some pull in his chest that he knew would lead him into the forest.
âWhere are we going?â Even though his brows furrow, a small smile spreads across Samâs lips as he lets Danny drag him off the bed.
âYouâll see.â Sam says nothing more as Danny leads him through the house, only hesitating as the other man opens the front door, the cool summer night air too cold against his bare chest.
âBaby, isnât it a little cold out?â If it had been, Danny hadnât felt it, the feeling comfortable on his skin from his years in 7, but he still briefly leaves Sam to grab a blanket from their couch anyways.
Danny offers him a small smile as he unfolds the fabric, quickly draping it over his shoulders and pulling Sam against his side until his arms wrap completely around him. âThis better?â
âMhm.â
The door closes quietly behind them before Danny notices Samâs bare feet as he bends to slip his boots on, gesturing towards a spare pair on the porch as he speaks. âI have some extra, you might want them since weâre going into the woods.â
âIâm alright, thanks though.â
Confusion fills Danny as he looks up at Sam with an amused smile. âYou sure?â
âYeah, I like feeling the ground beneath me. It helps me stay calm, makes me remember Iâm not in the arena anymore. I donât know, it might be stupid.â
Danny stands quickly, replacing his arms around Sam as he presses a light kiss to his cheek. âItâs not stupid, love.â They say nothing more as Danny begins to lead them through the forest, making sure to find the clearest path, worrying that Sam could step on something sharp. After a few minutes, the trees around them thin until they come to a stop in the center of a clearing, the stars above them blazing against the dark black of the night.
âHowâd you find this place?â Sam can do nothing but stare at the scenery around them while Danny lowers himself to the ground, his back against a large rock as his waiting arms and smile go unseen by Sam.
âStumbled on it a few months ago. I usually donât- didnât go this far away from town, but I got bored. Needed to clear my head.â
âItâs- itâs gorgeous, Danny.â Sam feels tears come to his eyes at the gesture, alternating his wide eyes between Danny and the sky.
Not as gorgeous as you. âIâm glad you like it.â Keeping his thoughts to himself, it isnât until Sam joins him on the ground and leans into his touch that Danny rips his eyes away from the other man to the stars above them.
They sit in comfortable silence as they stare at the sky, their hands lazily drifting over each otherâs skin as they settle into the other. Danny notices Sam tense in his arms as his fingers ghost the deep red line on his chest, his eyes locked on the healing gash before they flit up to Samâs, finding a sadness flashing behind them.
âYou know, that first night in the arena, I was glad they gave us stars in there. Even if it was all fake. It felt like I was sneaking out after curfew in District 1 again.â Samâs voice is small as he says it, his eyes distant and locked on the distance.
Fear floods Danny as he worries that Sam had already begun to regret choosing him, trying to keep his voice even despite the tears coming to his eyes. âDo you regret it? Not going back?â
âNo.â Sam snaps out of his daze, forcing himself to meet Dannyâs eyes. âNo, I mean Iâve only been here for a few hours, but I know I would choose it again in a heartbeat.â Samâs hand reaches up to cup Dannyâs cheek before placing a light kiss to his lips. âI finally feel at home. I donât regret choosing this life, your family. I donât regret choosing you.â
A tear escapes Danny as he takes in the expression of absolute love and care written across Samâs face, his worries leaving him as he leans into his touch. âDo you think weâll ever be able to be ok again?â His voice comes out in a whisper at the touch of Samâs other hand drifting across the scar on his stomach, feeling a slight sting as if even now, Vanilâs blade cut him again.
âI think so.â Samâs words are quiet, almost sad as he meets his eyes. âIt wonât be easy, we canât forget what happened, what we did. But I think weâll be ok eventually. The nightmares will happen less often. The scars will fade.â His knuckles gently brush against the scar below his eye as his other hand offers his side a gentle squeeze, only inches from where he knew that line cut through his skin. âItâll all get easier to live with. And we have each other, we both know what we went through, how to help when it gets bad. I think weâll be alright here.â
âI think so too. Iâm glad to have you here, Sammy.â
âIâm glad to be here. I- Iâm not so worried anymore, not after how Josie, Dave, and Luna treated me today. Iâm happy you have so many people that love you, Danny.â
âTheyâre gonna love you too, like I said, youâre their family now.â
âYeah.â Sam smiles as his eyes flit down to Dannyâs lips, finally asking the question that had been circling Dannyâs mind for days. âSo, what does that make us?â
âWhatever we want to be. I want to spend my life with you now that we can, now that we donât have to worry about which of us makes it out alive. I donât know what youâd call that, but I donât care; not as long as I have you, like this.â
âI feel the same way.â Danny says nothing in response, only wrapping his arms around Sam as he pulls him deeper into his chest and places a kiss to the top of his hair. He doesnât care enough to try and figure out how long it had been, content to sit in that clearing with Sam for as much time as he could, the slowly lightening sky their only hint as to what hour it was.
Danny finally moves to stand as the sun begins to peek over the horizon, holding Sam against his side under the warmth of their blanket as they silently make their way through the forest. They walk through the house quietly when they reach it, not wanting to wake Josie so early in the morning. When they finally bury themselves under the covers of their bed, Sam relaxes in Dannyâs arms almost immediately as his own exhaustion finally takes over and he feels himself drifting towards sleep. We made it. We did it. We can be happy this way, together. In our home, with our family.
âThose are reserved for my close friends and family. Last I checked, youâre neither.â
If someone had asked him, Sam would be able to tell them exactly when âthe male from 7â had become âDanielâ, and when that had turned into âDannyâ. But he couldnât believe that the change had happened in mere days, going from hating him to the point of wanting to kill him, to loving him so much he would die in his place. And in the span of less than two weeks, nonetheless. Sam felt like he had spent years with him; getting to know how incredible he was, staring at each perfect freckle over the arch of that gorgeous nose of his over the span of an entire lifetime. He only wished that he had had a lifetime with him, that their time together hadnât been cut short.
I donât know whether to be happy that I volunteered or angry. On one hand, if I hadnât volunteered, I wouldnât have died. But I wouldnât have met him, I wouldnât have known I could feel this much love for one person. I would have had a life, but it wouldnât have been worth living. Not without him. At least I died saving him. It was worth it, it- it meant something. He gets to go back to Josie, to his family. He has the chance to grow old, to start a family of his own. I just wish that I was there to see it, I wish it could have been our family. I hope he can go on without me; I know heâs strong, he has people who love him. Heâll be ok. Maybe it was cruel of me to make him live on after losing me, but he has people who need him, Josie needs him. My family will survive without me.
Feeling himself slowly come back to his body, or at least what felt like his body, he cracks his eyes open, immediately blinded by light as he tries to focus. Huh, didnât think âheavenâ would have this many fluorescent lights. To be honest, I didnât think Iâd make it to heaven, if it was real. Still blinking through bleary eyes, he can barely make out the forms of his brothers slumped against a wall in chairs, dark circles heavy under their eye as they slept. Confusion overtakes him as pain radiates through his body, beginning at the center of his chest and pulsing outwards, making his limbs feel heavy and sluggish. âGod, Iâm definitely in hell, then.â
The twinsâ eyes fly open at his voice as they both shoot out of their seats, Jake scrambling onto the bed below Sam and immediately wrapping his arms around his younger brother. âThank fucking god youâre alive.â Jake sniffles the words out, as if he was and had been crying.
âAlive, yeah, right.â Sam laughs lightly, but as his senses gradually return fully, doubt clouds his mind. âWait, youâre serious. Iâm not dead?â
âNo, but you tried really fucking hard to be.â Josh moves to his other side, sitting on the edge of the bed tentatively as he smiles at Sam, tears threatening his lash line as he looks at him.
âWhat? How?â Jake finally pulls back as Sam begins to look between them, still keeping his arm around his shoulders as he wipes his tears from his cheeks with his other hand.
âWe pulled a few strings in The Garden, convinced them to get you out.â
âMore like Jake did, if we had done things my way, people would have died. You should have seen Jake, heard him. Thereâs no way the President could say no to him.â Josh laughs, but nothing but gratitude and pride can be seen behind his eyes as he looks at his twin.
They said they got me out. What about Danny? âWhereâs Danny?â Sam doesnât even give them a moment to respond as his mind spirals, tears coming to his eyes as panic rises in him. âI swear to god, if you- if you traded his life for mine, if you let him get hurt, I- Iâll fucking kill you.â
âWoah, woah, woah, Sam, slow down.â Josh raises his hands up in an attempt to calm him and stop Sam from getting up before placing one on his shoulder gently, easing him back against the pillows again. âWe didnât, I promise. Jake convinced them to get you both out. Heâs safe, I swear.â
âWhere is he? I need to see him.â Pushing their hands off his body, Sam gathers all his strength as he gets up, trying to take a step towards the door as his legs only give out beneath him.
Thankfully, Jake rushes to catch him, beginning to gently guide him back towards the bed. âSam, stop. Please, just lay back down and one of us can try to find him.â
âNo. No, I need to find him now. You donât understand, I need to-â
âI understand, Sam.â Jakeâs eyes lock in his, his tinted shades missing, allowing Sam to see his knowing gaze. âI know you love him; I know thatâs why you stepped in front of him.â
âI-â Sam can say nothing more as he tries to sort through his jumbled thoughts, trying to decide whether to go look for him or trust that his brothers would find Danny for him.
Just as he decides to continue to push to find him himself, the door slams open as Danny freezes in the doorway, his eyes wide and locked on Sam. âSammy.â Dannyâs voice breaks as he rushes towards him, closing the space between them quickly as he scoops Sam up into his arms, his face burrowing into the soft skin of his neck as he lifts the other man slightly.
It isnât until then that Sam realizes that he was wearing nothing but a thin hospital gown, but he doesnât care as he melts into Dannyâs touch, so overwhelmed by his happiness to think of much else. They had made it, they both made it through the games. Together, alive. âDanny.â He sees his brothers slip out of the room quietly with small smiles on their lips before he closes his eyes, bringing his head down until his cheek rests against Dannyâs hair.
After a few moments, Danny loosens his grip, setting Sam down gently as he half holds him up. Before Sam can speak, Dannyâs lips crash into his, desperate and full of love as Sam feels his tears on his skin, mixing with his own in his elation. Sam begins to smile as Danny pulls away until he opens his eyes, seeing anger and fear plastered across the other manâs face as he guides him to sit on the edge of the bed. âWhat the fuck were you thinking?! You almost fucking- almost died for me, because of me! You fucking idiot! Why would you do that?!â
âWe gotta stop meeting like this.â Sam tries to smile at him, hoping to ease Dannyâs anger. He didnât hold it against him that he was upset, he knew exactly how it felt to fear that he had lost the other.
Dannyâs anger melts away, laughing slightly as he climbs onto the bed, pulling Sam with him as he sniffles. âWe really do.â
Sam presses himself against Danny, needing to be closer to him, needing to feel that safety he always felt in his arms. âI am sorry though. If you had done the same for me, I- I donât even want to imagine going through that. Thinking I lost you, and for it all to be my fault. Can you forgive me?â
âThereâs nothing to forgive, Sammy. I could never hate you for what you did; I love you too much to do that.â
âI love you too, Danny.â Neither say anything more as they hold the other close, trying to fully accept the reality that they were together, outside the arena. Sam never thought he would have the opportunity, never let himself hope that they could somehow both make it through.
âCan I ask you something?â Dannyâs voice is quiet, small as he asks, and Sam tilts his head up to look directly at him properly.
âGo ahead.â
âWhen we were in the arena, when you were- when you were dying. You said that I had already saved you. What did you mean?â
âI mean exactly what I said. You saved me, Danny, and not just physically, not just my life. Before the games, before you, I was an asshole. I was more than an asshole. I had a terrible mentality; I would have done horrific things just to win. All because of my own pride and jealousy. I was- I was nothing more than everything The Garden wanted me to be. But after I met you, after I got to know you, you helped me change. See more value to lives, show me true kindness. You mourned your losses, felt remorse for killing. You saved my life when you could have easily killed me. When it would have been easier to kill me, when anyone else would have. But you didnât.â Sam takes a deep breath, hoping that his explanation was coming off as he intended. âI would do it all over again in a heartbeat if it meant that I could become a better person just by being around you, even if it meant I hadnât survived in the end. I would relive every second with you, the good and bad.â
âI would too.â Dannyâs voice is quiet, his tears threatening to spill onto his cheeks once again as he rests his forehead against Samâs, closing his eyes. He places a kiss to Samâs forehead before relaxing into the pillow below him, his arms around Sam tightening slightly as if he were afraid something would take them from each other. They sit in silence for a few minutes this way, still in utter awe that they were together again before Danny breaks it again. âDo you want me to go find your brothers?â
âNo. I know theyâll come back. I just want this right now. You.â Danny silently nods as Sam rests his head on his chest, closing his eyes as he feels himself creep towards sleep. Just as heâs about to slip into it, he hears the door open and close quietly as two pairs of feet shuffle against the linoleum of the floor.
âSorry, did we wake you?â Joshâs voice is quiet as Sam opens his eyes, the other man looking at him apologetically.
âNo, itâs alright.â Sam looks to Jake next, seeing something lurking just barely below his expression causing him to sit up as Danny does the same. âWhatâs wrong?â
âI just spoke to the President. Sheâs given you two options. You can both go back to your respective districts and live there, or- or you can choose one of your original districts where both of you will live. Once you choose, you canât change your mind.â
What? Sam looks to Danny as hope flares in his chest. Danny could finally live the life he deserves; the one I could give him in District 1.
Danny must have realized what he was thinking as his eyes drop to his hand fiddling with the blanket below him. âI canât leave Josie, and I would never ask you to leave your family.â
Despair claws at his throat as Sam tries not to cry. He didnât know what to do. On one hand, if he went back to 1, he would lose Danny. It would be as if they had never met. He would have no one to call his, no one to hold him when his nightmares ripped him from sleep. He would be alone again. But on the other, if he chose to go back to 7 with Danny, he would lose his brothers, only see them once a year when the games rolled around. âI-â Sam looks to the twins, hoping there would be even the slightest hint of what to do apparent on their faces as Danny avoids his eyes.
âItâs ok, Sammy. We understand.â Joshâs tears roll down his cheeks as he smiles at him, and although there was pain beneath his eyes, he knew that Josh was being honest with him. They were happy he had the choice to stay with Danny if he wanted.
âYou do?â
âWe do.â Jake speaks next, his expression identical to his twin as he glances towards Danny. âHeâs taken more care of you in the last week than we have in the last few years. We want you to be happy, Sammy. Wherever- wherever that takes you.â
Sam looks to Danny next, the other man still avoiding his eyes as he speaks, his voice quiet. âI canât ask you to leave your district, your family, for a poorer one just for me.â
âYou donât have to ask.â
âWeâll⊠give you a minute to talk.â Jake taps Joshâs shoulder to tell him to follow as he moves to leave the room quickly. Silence falls between them as the twins close the door behind themselves, neither knowing what to say to the other.
âI want you to understand that this is a forever choice. You canât go back to 1 if you come with me. Ever.â
âI know. Do you- do you want me to go back to 7 with you?â Sam waits for him to answer, holding his breath as his nerves trickle into his mind. What if he says no? What if he doesnât want me there.
âNothing would make me happier. I want you to meet Josie, Dave; I want them to meet the man that saved my life. The man I love. I want to show you how gorgeous the forests can be when someone isnât trying to kill you. I want to live with you and grow old together and just try- try to keep living after the games. After everything that weâve been through.â Dannyâs voice breaks as he finally meets Samâs eyes, both their tears making silent tracks down their cheeks. âAnd most of all, I want you to be happy, Sammy. Even if that means that I- that I lose you.â
âIf you want me to be happy, I can only think of one place I can have that, be that. I want to go back to 7 with you. I donât care if it isnât as wealthy as 1, I donât care about leaving everything and everyone Iâve ever known. My brothers will understand why I chose this, so thereâs nothing left to keep me there. I want this, us. I want you.â
âAre you sure?â Sam knew Danny wasnât asking because he doubted him. He was making sure because he knew how large of a decision this was for him, he didnât want him to regret choosing him, and Sam couldnât help but smile at the thought.
âYes. Iâve never been more sure of anything in my life.â Dannyâs lips spread into a grin before they find Samâs, less desperate than their kiss before had been but still full of just as much love, if not more. As they pull away from each other and Sam finds a home against Dannyâs chest, only one thought circles his mind. We can have a life together.
