The Underneath was released on 13 March 1995.
Directed and written (under the name "Sam Lowry") by Steven Soderbergh, the film is based on Don Tracy's 1934 novel Criss Cross and the 1949 film of the same name (Daniel Fuchs, who wrote the screenplay for the 1949 film is given co-writing credit).
Soderbergh's 4th feature film received mixed reviews - most admired (or hated) his stylish use of flashbacks and other techniques, but found the film had more style than emotion - and failed to find an audience at the box office.
