Daniel (fifth estate): husband. Daniel from the Fifth Estate would be a great husband! He's definitely the most introverted of the three, but he would enjoy spending quality time with his SO. Just be prepared for him to present all of his tech projects to you as a form of love!
Daniel (nebenan): one night stand. As I've said before, Daniel Weltz is a piece of work, but I think that he'd be a great one night stand. He struggles with romantic commitment, so this is perfect for him.
Daniel (colonia): best friend. Having this Daniel as a best friend would be amazing, and he would always keep you on your toes! He might drag the two of you to political rallies together, and together you would protest societal injustice wherever you were living. Your revolutionary bestie would call you up any time, and he seems like a super fun person to hang out with!
365 Day Movie Challenge (2017) - #194: The Fifth Estate (2013) - dir. Bill Condon
Even with the probably embarrassingly rudimentary level of understanding that I have about Julian Assange and his information-sharing organization, WikiLeaks, I can tell that The Fifth Estate is a poor excuse for a biopic. I am not inherently opposed to films told from one particularly biased viewpoint – in this case, Condon’s film aligns its sympathies with WikiLeaks’ co-creator, Daniel Domscheit-Berg (played here by Daniel Brühl), thereby making Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) the villain – but the narrative created by screenwriter Josh Singer (who later won an Oscar for Spotlight’s screnplay) is just plain irritating in its one-sidedness. Domscheit-Berg’s late-in-the-game grasps at some moral high ground in the face of Assange’s repeated invasions of innocent civilians’ privacy are nothing if not frustrating, as is the underwritten portrayal of his girlfriend (later wife), Anke (Alicia Vikander).
In the last minutes of the film, Cumberbatch’s Assange gives an oh-so-meta “interview” about the making of the film you have just seen it, stating that “if you want the truth, no one is going to tell you the truth, they're going to tell you their version. So if you want the truth, you have to seek it out for yourself. In fact that's where power lies, in your willingness to look beyond this story, any story. And as long as you keep searching, you are dangerous to them. That's what they're afraid of: you. It's all about you. And a little bit about me too.” In other words, you didn’t need to watch the film since it was only one possible presentation of a tale that is apparently open to subjective interpretation, rather than being an explanation of objective reality. Why did Bill Condon and company even bother to make The Fifth Estate if they were going to end the feature with that disclaimer?
