I wanted to give everyone a quick update on our roof situation. After the leaks from the storm the other night, my anxiety was through the roof trying to find a solution before the monsoon really set in.

After some runaround early on regarding our patio and such, we officially shifted our strategy to buying some breathing room, and it paid off massively. I got in contact with Axis Roofing, and managed to hire someone to come out and install heavy-duty, emergency storm tarping across the main structure of the house.

He had to detour around Superior, resulting in a longer trip to get up here than expected, but then spent three hours going completely above and beyond for my family and my home after he arrived. He cleared away whatever old debris was present on the roof from our previous band-aid attempts at securing it, and wrapped the entire main roof in a single, giant tarp, anchoring it down with wood furring strips and heavy sandbags to withstand the monsoon winds.

For the first time in ages, I feel like I can look at the sky and breathe a sigh of relief. My mom, our cat, and the inside of our home are completely safe and dry for the coming months.

While the emergency tarp (hopefully) solves the immediate threat and protects us through the storm season, this isn't over. We still have a long road ahead to save up for a permanent re-roofing job and potentially navigating permits and such for the patio once the weather clears later this year.

I wanted to check in and give you all a quick update now that it’s been a little over a week since Dan from Axis Roofing secured our emergency storm tarp.

Firstly, the tarp is holding well and doing its job wonderfully so far. We’ve had a few weather shifts, some heavy winds, and the inside of the house has stayed completely dry, while the tarp itself has held strong. My mom and I have finally been able to sleep through the night and welcome each day without having to look upon the clouds on the horizon with dread. Your support bought us this peace of mind, and we are eternally grateful. 🙏

However, as the dust settles, we are still facing the reality of the coming months. As heavy-duty as this tarp is, I have to reiterate that it is only a temporary shield against the monsoon season. It cannot survive the harsh Arizona sun and high winds forever.

Now that the immediate emergency is dealt with, we are shifting our focus to Phase 2: the permanent, legal solution. Besides our need for a proper long-term roof replacement, we still potentially are going to have to deal with either repairing or removing that damaged patio, and the permitting and costs that may require.

Because we are keeping this fundraiser going into the coming months to reach our ultimate structural goals, we still need all the help we can get. The urgency hasn't faded—it has just evolved from "stop the immediate flood" to "ensure we have a permanent, safe home."

A licensed professional inspector came out to look at our house yesterday; The good news is the main living structure is entirely fixable. The tough news is that because our attached patio took severe structural damage in the last storms, corporate liability and warranty rules won't let them touch the main roof until the patio framework is safely repaired or removed, which is not work the company in question signs up for.

Because the Arizona monsoon season is practically here, we don't have time to wait on a massive structural project. We are currently waiting on a lead for a flexible local contractor to look at the patio. If that takes too long, our immediate backup plan is to shift our funds to have the main house professionally and heavily weather-tarped so my mom and I stay completely safe and dry this summer while we tackle the permanent structural fixes afterward. The key thing is to avoid the type of catastrophic water encrochment we saw last year. I never want to experience that again, if I can help it. :(

The second extraordinary thing that happened today has taken place about two hours ago and has not been enjoyable. We had a thunderstorm brewing and a massive cold front came with it. The thunderstorm itself was weak and it rained only not very much (at least it did rain at all) but there were heavy gusts of wind. Like really heavy. So, one roof tile had been pulled out but luckily it did not fall down.

The same thing happened 6 years ago in a massive winter storm, it has been 14 roof tiles back then and a lot of shards. Afterwards, we had the roofer reinforce the structure. Seems like it still is not enough... Meh! Now I have to call the roofer again because there is no way I will climb up there to get it back in.
