this month I am reading ✨ art fic ✨  — the kind of writing that squeezes the breath from you and makes you bawl with the way it quietly, devastatingly reaches inside and tugs. on the other hand, i’ve also read a lot of fic that is lighthearted and sweet and fun. so from now on I’m going to be sorting these by fandom as well as genre! hope it helps you find something new (and wonderful) to read. as usual, ships are all over the place: i think that every single one of these features a diff pairing lmao

komori’s perspective of sakuatsu relationship from high school to college/v.league. canon and timeskip compliant. hoshiumi cameo!

komori motoya’s perspective on growing up and watching other people fall in love and loneliness and volleyball as a way of living

when I say this fic made me cry, I mean that it made me lie in bed and SOB for ten minutes. holy shit (maybe I projected too hard) completely worth reading, especially if you love komori motoya as much as I do

venus 金星 planet of love series by fatal

kunimi/kageyama; rated M; varying lengths but 28k total; 3 fics, series complete

timeskip kunikage, fwb but they are kind of in love. past sakusa/kunimi in the second part

actually this is a series and they are all published separately. the first one is fairly short and the next two are longer

in which ao3 user fatal ripped out my heart and didn’t give it back. I keep saying this for every fic but I really, really mean it when I say this writing is breathtaking and spectacular and devastating. if you are in the mood for kunikage Angst with capital A, I cannot recommend this enough

it was 3:30 am and I sobbed through this fic in bed. didn’t think it was possible to cry so hard over a metaphor. if you read this and want to talk about it my DMs are open. PLEASE I am desperate to talk to anybody about it oh my god

I’m not here just to play defense and back up my teammates. All of us are on this court to score.

they’re both super responsible and look after their friends, but also themselves, at least to a reasonable amount

they wouldn’t really struggle particularly with day-to-day domestic stuff but their relationship wouldn’t be too bland either… like maybe they can be a bit dense when it comes it emotions but they’re both expressive enough and when it’s people they’re close to? their emotional intelligence is off the charts (eg. daichi with the other third years and his siblings, kita with inarizaki and his grandma)

what made me gravitate big time towards them though is that they’re both wing spikers who particularly specialise in defence and receiving.

i could do a fucking essay on how most haikyuu character’s personalities are really well reflected in both their position and playing style, but perhaps the two that exemplify this the most are daichi and kita

as captains, they care for the welfare and achievements of the whole team - they work not just on their own performance but everyone’s, and that’s exactly their nature. they still want to push ahead and reach specific targets but (and one of my favourite things about kita is his views on inarizaki’s motto) they’re also so damn loyal and ready to prop their teammates up when they struggle. they learn from the past and plan into the future, and are seen as a constant pillar of support by their team - even though they’re also seen by their team to not be keeping it together all the time (multi dimensional characters?? that’s some good soup!!)

that wasn’t great - long story short, they’re positive forward thinkers (spiking) but also have a focus on protecting and strengthening their team (defence)

not to mention, while they seem reasonably stable, they would help each other a lot with their small insecurities.

i feel like daichi seriously struggles to care for himself as much as he should (he gets nightmares and seems to put the team’s welfare before his own), while that’s kita’s whole thing! he’d phrase looking after yourself in a way that would actually appeal to daichi and get him to do it, and kita would always be there to help.

and even though he’s the team leader, i can see kita sometimes finding it hard to not be “needed” on court, in the way a lot of starting players might see things. daichi doesn’t actually seem to care about that - he prefers the players who bring up the rest of the team. i feel like the respect he has for the karasuno bench association (especially sugawara and ennoshita - also, daichi is the only karasuno captain we see being a starting team member) definitely carries over to kita and would reassure him, and it’s a value that continues to later life.

their occupations aren’t all that flashy (especially kita’s) but they view constant and reliable service to the community above those money or obviously displays of talent, and i think that’d really bolster their confidence.
