Hey there! This is for the Detective Conan ask: 5, 9, 15, and 18 (including Kid’s gadgets!) Also, what do you love most about Kaito/Kid?
DC Ask
5. Who is your favourite female character (+ a scene she appears in)?
This continues to be a difficult question for me since I like most all of the female characters equally... I’ve talked about Ran before, so I think I’ll go with Yukiko this time, the disguise expert on the hero’s side.
The scene that comes to mind with her probably has to be during the Mystery Train where she and Vermouth were having a chat. Though, with Yukiko it’s not really a scene itself that I enjoy so much as she was always around in disguise and helped everything that had been planned play out. When it comes down to anything big anticipated with the BO, she basically always has a hand in it. The situation with Kir has been the only big exception, since that was more action oriented and in the moment, not thought out beforehand. I feel like some people tend to write her off because of her personality, but she’s been the crux of Shinichi’s carefully laid plans, and his BO encounters would be a lot harder to deal with without her being a factor. Her physically being there in the Mystery Train showdown basically cemented her as a key player to the main conflict, especially to Vermouth, the only BO agent who knew she was there and could work out what happened.
9. What is your favourite/most memorable case?
There are a lot of memorable cases, but for one that’s also a favourite, I think I’d have to go with the bomb threats that revolved around the past and let us know about Matsuda. (Ep 304 of the anime.)
Even though we know from the beginning that Matsuda is dead, I still enjoyed seeing him in the flashbacks, and I still wish more had come of the scene where Takagi and Conan were in the elevator together.Nice small moment of ShinRan in with all the suspense, and larger moment with Takagi and Satou that cleared up a good amount of the past and let Satou move on with her life.
Good case overall (with real threat, codes, chasing down the criminal at the end), and especially nice work with the characters. Even if the follow-up for some was horrible. ‘Takagi just thinks he’s a bright boy’ my ass, Gosho.
15. Which is your favourite movie?
I never can help but lean towards movie 14. I know a lot of people who like the mystery in Detective Conan borderline hate it because it really doesn’t have much of a mystery to it. Nothing really presents itself as a mystery to be solved, it’s more tacked on in the ‘who is this group and what are they after’, but it’s really more about the fanservice and that works perfectly well for me.
Like most people who do enjoy the movie: I do love Kid. I like his interactions off the other characters, especially when it’s in an environment that can really only be done within a movie. He and Conan can tentatively set aside their differences aside to get something accomplished in the manga, but not nearly to the extent of poking fun at each other because they know the other needs their help and that they’ll be stuck working together for a while. In this movie, in in both of their best interest to help each other since they’re the only ones who can freely move around, and it takes full advantage.
And it has small Heiji cameos that help with what mystery is there. Any extra Heiji is more than okay in my book, so... Sorry to the people who prefer death and murder in their Conan plot, I’ll take the fun comedy, action, and character moments. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
18. If you could have any of Conan’s (or Kid’s) gadgets, which would it be?
Hmm.... That glider cape would be awesome, but having it would be pretty useless in an area you can’t use it. ( And don’t know how to hang glide. ) I mean, I’d still want it, but it’d be more for show than for usefulness. That, or the card gun with all the the various functions. ( Conan’s are definitely more useful in normal situations, but I’d go with the fun toys Kaito uses either way. )
Bonus: What do you love most about Kaito/Kid?
My salt drives me to say his potential. He’s had so many experiences that would give character growth if MK hadn’t been written as a gag manga to begin with, but even after Gosho started writing a more serious tone for the phantom thief, nothing has really changed. Kaito has always had skill from learning how to be a magician, and it’s part of why he’s done as well as he has with a sudden criminal job. ( The other part being sheer luck and having protagonist armor. ) As a character, there are a lot of ways he can be interpreted, and can be liked by a lot of people.
If we don’t look at meta, though, then I like that he’s not perfect. He’s survived a lot that people shouldn’t, sure, but it’s not as bad as Shinichi’s track record with cases. If you compare the two, Kaito gets his plans messed up far too often, and rarely has a perfect time with things. Shinichi might need a hint or two from the universe and someone saying the right thing at the right time, but his faults aren’t in how he solves cases ( usually, there’s only been a few exceptions ), it’s only in how he interacts with other people. Even in recent cases, he figures things out immediately, but is hung up on his own personal problems.
...Basically, I like that Kaito struggles more to do what he does. He might have chosen to make life harder for himself, but it shows that he can overcome obstacles. He was never a god powered thief from the get-go (unlike Toichi), and still isn’t completely overpowering anyone, even in DC where he’s supposed to be at his most mysterious since it’s from Conan’s pov.
Hi! For the Detective Conan questions: 1, 3, 11, 15, 18!
1. How did you get into Detective Conan, and what was your first case?
I don’t actually remember the very first case I watched. I’m pretty sure it was a filler episode, and it completely failed to capture my interest at the time. That was actually in high school. In college, I saw a bunch of DC fics on my favorite FMA author’s favorites lists on FFN and decided to give the series another shot, so I watched the Last Wizard of the Century–it seemed like one of the more interesting movies, from the description. It was. I loved it and was hooked. After that, I think I found the first volume of the manga, so my first canon case was the roller-coaster decapitation.
3. What is your favourite DC trope? (A recurring quote, action, joke etc.)
This was hard because while I kinda like all the recurring things happening as a whole–it’s a little comforting, knowing that things will happen according to a certain pattern–a lot of them annoy me individually. I think my favorite might be Heiji calling Conan Kudou, and then trying to cover for it in various ways. It’s still hilarious. He’s so bad at lying.
11. Which character do you least and/or most identify with?
So, I’ve mentioned this before, but I kinda identify with Shinichi. This is for a couple of reasons, many of which are oddly personal for a character who is part Holmes analogue and part everyman. I feel like a lot of us also really identify with Megure, who is the most canonically invested in keeping the kids safely away from mysteries and is also perpetually tired.
I’ve also complained about this before, but I find Bourbon’s motivations really…well, hard to understand isn’t quite the right phrasing. I understand what Gosho was going for there but I don’t like it and as a whole picture I don’t think it actually makes a lot of sense. I don’t want to turn this into another Bourbon rant but just say that while I think he has a certain aesthetic appeal and does do cool things on occasion, I find him extremely hard to relate to.
15. Which is your favourite movie?
I’ve watched more than half of the movies by this point and Last Wizard of the Century is still my absolute goshdarn favorite. I love the case, I love the character interactions, I love the history (which was accurate at the time it was made) and the animation is gorgeous. I have gotten a friend into the series by putting that movie on for them; I personally think it’s a better introduction to many of the series’ high points than the first episode is.
18. If you could have any of Conan’s gadgets, which would it be?
If I could have a working voice-changing bowtie, that would be pretty neat. I’m not sure what I’d do with it, practically, but most of Conan’s gadgets are only really necessary for small children living dangerous lives. The bowtie, however, has fun potential. Like, I wouldn’t do prank calls on strangers but friends are fair game. Also, like, could you use the thing to, I don’t know, voice an audiobook or a cartoon all by yourself by changing the voices? (Probably, as long as you can act, which I can’t…but let me dream!)
Detective Conan Ask!
Hi meitanteimary!! First, thank you for all of your DC analyses...I read every one that comes across my feed! Here are the numbers for the DC ask: 1, 6, 19, 21!
Hello! You’re welcome, I love making analysing characters and situations :D I’m so glad to hear that, thank you!
Let’s start:
How did you get into Detective Conan, and what was your first case? Well, believe it or not, my first case was episode one of Detective Conan back in 2002! You see, one day back in 2002 I was watching tv and suddenly the first episode of a brand new series appeared. I was almost 5 years old (OMG) and didn’t know what was going on nor why that guy had turned into a little 6-year-old boy but I liked it so I continued watching it! So my first case was actually the Tropical Land case in episode one (:
Which character would you most want as a sidekick?Probably Masumi Sera or Heiji Hattori!
If you could revive any one of the deceased characters, who would it be?MATSUDA JINPEI MATSUDA JINPEI MATSUDA JINPEI
Favourite OP and ED from the anime?I like Opening 25 and Ending 54!
ASK ME DC STUFF!
1, 12, 14, 20 for the DC ask!
!!!
Nobody ever actually sends me one of these, so to attempt to describe how big of a smile has etched itself on my face upon seeing this would be futile :’)
I’m so dramatic, pardon me.
To the questions!
1. How did you get into Detective Conan, and what was your first case?
Oh my, I got into it as a child, over a decade ago. I used to watch the anime with my brother when we were kids. But when I started high school, I actually learned about the manga and how the anime is an adaptation of it so I started reading the manga from the very first volume, and here we are. Now I’ve read every single file but rarely watch the anime anymore because I prefer the old style. But when I do, I watch it in arabic because of nostalgia from my childhood c:
12. What are some interesting facts/trivia you’ve learned from the series?
Hmm…let’s see. The one that stuck the most is that when someone is poisoned with potassium cyanide, their breath will smell like almonds.
14. If you were to form your own Detective Boys squad, who are 5 characters you’d choose to join the team?
Ran, Heiji, Shinichi, Kazuha and Sonoko :) I love them to bits and they would all make one hell of a team. Heiji and Shinichi are obviously ace detectives, but Ran has proved to be perceptive in the past and has solved some cases or helped to solve them. Plus, Ran and Kazuha are forces to be reckoned with, so that will prove handy during encounters with criminals. And Sonoko is very resourceful and her gossipy nature would allow her to find out about secret whereabouts of murderers and uncover details about suspects’ lives and the crimes in general. Hehe
20. Which recurring character do you wish would get more screen time?
Okay, Heiji is my favourite character after Ran, so it would have to be him. I will never think that we see enough of that knucklehead. Akai would definitely be next, and by that I mean under his real appearance and not any disguise. I miss our silver bullet…
Thank you thank you thank you for asking, this made my day ♥
