On 03.08.2025, 6 friends explored Gambhirgad near Dahanu, Palghar on a Sunday.

There were no rains and it was humid and hot while ascending. We had almost renamed this trek as the first dry monsoon trek of the season! We literally posed seriousness with Gambhirgad in front of us. Almost 4 litres of water were consumed in the strenuous trek. It rained intermittently and we were thankful for it. The terrain was full of wild overgrowth and rocks. It was a continuous ascent with the only respite in form of descent while returning. A guide is a must in this wilderness.

I felt it was a moderate grade trek due to humidity & lack of rains while climbing up. The continuous steep uphill climb makes the trek tiring. The length & the terrain needs endurance. 8.04 km of the trek was a loop (ascending & descending). I think we must have crossed one or two streams in the entire route. There is only one water tank which provides potable water and we refilled and drank much to quench our thirst.

TIME LINE:

04:45 wake up alarm. 06:30 meet-up. 07:35-07:50 breakfast halt at Shree Datta Snacks. 09:00 reach the base village. 09:15 trek starts with a guide. 13:00-14:00 lunch break at the top. 15:00 descent starts. 17:00 base village, Patilpada near Vyahali. 17:15 return journey starts. 19:00-19:20 refreshments at Shree Datta Snacks. 21:00 home sweet home.

The first glimpse of Gambhirgad was mysterious.

We visited the base of these cliffs while descending.

The descent started.

A friend told me that MAHARAJ had hidden his treasure here!

The only water cistern that provides source of potable water is below the highest point of Gambhirgad (on the right hand side).

EXPENSES:

625/- petrol + toll (2500/- total). 117/- guide (He was ready for 500/-, but we offered him 700/-). 140/- snacks. 80/- rickshaw.

At 6:45 pm - we started from MahaLaxmi temple on the highway and reached the top of Vivalvedhe (mountain temple of Mahalaxmi Devi) at 8 pm. By 9 pm, we descended the other way and reached the highway bypassing Charoti Naka. In short, we completed the parikrama or circumambulation of Vivalvedhe.

The villagers told us that the fair will continue for the next 15 days starting from 11.04.2025.

Top tip:

The ascent of Vivalvedhe is gradual from highway side and the descent from Vivalghadh towards highway which bypasses Charoti Naka is steep even for the vehicles.

Avoid ascending Vivalvedhe before crossing Charoti Naka, while traveling from Dahanu to Shree MahaLaxmi temple on the highway.

We read the name of AshaGad (village/ locality) and there may be a fort by that name nearby. Next time, we may trek there.

Dahanu Mahalaxmi Mandir (temple) on the highway near Charoti.

There is another temple of the same Goddess on a hill. The name of Vivalvedha.

From the east at Dahanu railway station, shared tumtum (vehicle) cramping 12 to 15 passengers which could have accommodated 9 passengers comfortably, takes Rs. 40/- from station to Charoti naka. Another rickshaw will take Rs.20/- per head from Charoti naka to Mahalaxmi temple on the highway.

Rickshaw hired privately will take 400/- for 2 to 4 passengers (100/- each if 4 passengers) too travel between Dahanu railway station (East) to Charoti naka.

The going and return journey by a rickshaw is 600/- with a waiting charge of Rs.100/- for an hour. So total 700/-.

I traveled by private auto both the times and paid 400/- each and thus a total of 800?- with no limits to my darshan time.
