I do not mean to start an argument or snap at ANYONE, so please don't snap at me in return if you are going to reply to this. In fact, please DO respond, I want to hear your opinion, but let's all be civil and polite about it!! I DO understand how personal Camisado and Nails are to Ryan Ross, I do understand that he went through a lot and those songs are about his father's alcoholism and other things. I am educated on this topic, yes. HOWEVER, I also believe that Brendon Urie has EVERY right to play/sing/perform those songs. They are published, public songs, FOR his band. FROM his band. He is allowed to use them. He was getting pressure from fans to play more Fever songs, and he did. These songs are off of Panic!'s album, therefore it is his music. This was not a cover. He originally sang that song, he helped write the music for that song, he recorded that song. Sure, it was personal to Ryan, the lyrics were personal, but Ryan chose to show the rest of the band those lyrics to be written into a song and published. Technically, although the personal connection to the song might be different, Brendon does have as much right to play that song as any other pre-split Panic! Member. In fact, he actually has MORE of a right to play that song, since he's still in the band it was written by and for. Remember, Ryan was a member of a band that he gave ideas and music to, for the BAND's benefit. This is like if Pete ever left FOB, would we give Patrick shit for playing anything from pre-hiatus that was written about Pete's mental health and/or relationships and/or personal experiences that are popular and fan-favorites? I understand where fans are coming from, but a main point they're making is that Brendon should've given him credit.. how?! We already know what the lyrics are about and that Ryan wrote them. We know they were written by Ryan, how else was he supposed to give credit? Pay royalties to play his own band's song? It isn't a cover, it was written by THE BAND as a whole, Ryan just wrote a piece of it. If you think Brendon can't sing words that are personal to Ryan even though he was part of the band when he wrote them, what makes you think you can sing or cover Gospel? That's a VERY personal song to Brendon, and we aren't even in the band! Brendon didn't get up on stage and say "this song has lyrics written by ME about nothing in particular" or something. He didn't discredit Ryan or lie about the origin if the song, he simply played his band's song, one that he helped create. I guess what I don't understand is what could Brendon have done instead? There isn't any need, reason or way to credit Ryan. He played songs off of an album he was asked to play more of. If he isn't allowed to play these songs now, does the mean we're not allowed to listen to them or enjoy them? Does this mean he's not allowed to ever play them again? Does this mean Dallon shouldn't play Jon's bass parts, or that (especially since we aren't in the band) the fans aren't allowed to enjoy or cover these songs/This Is Gospel/Sarah Smiles/every song that's personal to the lyricist of the song by Panic! or any band? Oh wait, that'd be ridiculous, since that's EVERY SONG EVER WRITTEN. It's ART, it's meant to be performed and published, it's meant to be shown, no matter how personal. I, personally, feel as though Brendon can, and SHOULD, play music from his band, no matter what song that happens to be. Unless Ryan personally gets offended and asks Brendon to not play these songs, I don't see a reason Brendon can't play/perform them. That is all. Love every one of you!
