Too quiet.

You slipped your heels off by the marble entryway, your clutch still tucked under your arm, and tiptoed past the glowing chandelier light in the hallway. It was well past midnight, maybe close to 1am and you hadn’t meant to stay out that late. One drink turned into four. A rooftop dinner turned into club music and laughter with your girls. It had felt so good to let go — to not be “Mommy” for a night.

But now, as you padded barefoot through the massive, dimly lit living room in your mini dress and sparkly cardigan, your chest clenched.

What if D/n woke up and cried for me? What if she asked where I was? What if she thought I left?

You were halfway through the archway when you saw it.

And your heart shattered in the best way.

There in the middle of the living room, nestled inside a makeshift pillow fort built from $300 throw blankets and Restoration Hardware cushions was Rafe.

Shirtless, relaxed, completely passed out on the plush rug a little bit of sparkly toddler toy makeup on his eye lids.

And curled up right on top of his chest, dressed in a pair of pink butterfly pajamas, one hand tangled in his gold chain, was D/n.

She was fast asleep, mouth parted slightly, her cheek smooshed against his skin like she belonged there. One of her tiny plush unicorns lay beside her. Her other arm wrapped tightly around Rafe’s neck.

On the TV, the screen was paused on My Little Pony.

The table nearby still had half a bowl of popcorn, two sippy cups, some sour patch kids, and a baby bottle. Crayons and coloring books were scattered around the floor like confetti. You could smell the baby floral shampoo in her hair from where you stood.

And the fort — oh my God, the fort was ridiculously cute. Like something out of a magazine. Twinkly fairy lights looped around the top, pillows everywhere. They’d clearly been playing all day.

You pressed a hand to your mouth, tears instantly stinging your eyes.

It was just too much. Too perfect. Too soft.

Rafe — your Rafe, the boy who once broke shit for fun and drank too hard and cursed too loud was now this man. This dad. Protecting and loving your daughter with this fierce, quiet devotion.

You stepped closer, heart swelling in your chest.

He stirred.

Eyes cracked open, bleary and slow.

When he saw you, he gave you the tiniest, softest smile.

“Hey, pretty girl.” His voice was rough, low. “You have fun?”

You nodded, kneeling beside the fort, brushing D/N’s curls back from her face. “Yeah… I did. Thank you. So much.”

Rafe looked down at the tiny toddler wrapped around him and grinned sleepily.

“She missed you for like ten minutes. Then she made me watch six episodes of that sparkly pony show and told me I was Princess Daddy.”

You laughed — a quiet, wet laugh that cracked open your heart.

“You’re so good to her, Rafe.”

He shrugged, careful not to wake her as he brushed her hair with gentle fingers.

“She’s my girl. You both are.”

And God, that was it.

The guilt. The love. The joy. The ache of being loved like this — of coming home from champagne and city lights to find the man you love asleep in a glowing pillow fort with your daughter still wrapped around him like he was her entire world.

It hit all at once.

You crawled into the fort beside them, slipping into the space under Rafe’s arm, curling into his side and resting your head on his chest — right beside your daughter.

She stirred in her sleep, tiny hand patting blindly at Rafe’s chest.

He caught it and held it gently.

“We got along fine without you,” he teased, kissing the top of your head. “But we’re better with you home.”

You smiled, eyes finally closing.
