I’ve always headcanon-ed (aka wanted to write but haven’t gotten around to it lmao) that as soon as he got a part-time job, prompto filled out papers for Legal Emancipation and just left it on the counter for his parents to sign and that was that. So then he’d have no guardian and is literally just trying to take care of things for himself but still gravitates towards father figures like Clarus bc he deserves the best.

he’s trying so hard to take care of everything himself
he doesn’t even tell noctis what he’s done, but suddenly he won’t let noctis come to his house anymore, because he’s had to move out
noct gets suspicious but can’t even IMAGINE what the issue actually is because it’s so far beyond his understanding of the world
until prompto’s literally running himself into the ground trying to doeverything himself
then he gets sick and clarus has him moved tot heir house for the recovery :DDDDD
