happy thedas weekend!!!! if you're inspired, how about Alissa Trevelyan/Garrett Hawke and "Quick, kiss me again, they’re coming back—" from the after they kiss prompts?
Happy Thedas Weekend!! For @thedasweekend, I finally got this one finished! It's a doozy so it took a while. This is set during the Mark of the Assassin dlc from Dragon Age 2.
Content Warning: toxic family, domestic violence hinted at, trauma/abuse briefly mentioned, two stubborn idiots that refuse to admit they have feelings
Length: 2.9k
Alissa propped her hands on her hips as her storm blue eyes followed Hawke and the elven girl across the Duke’s inner courtyard. Amusement bubbled up into a smile on her lips before she could stop it. The forced invitation didn’t seem like such an imposition now. Chaos was sure to worm its way into the party if Hawke was in attendance. Nothing was ever boring with Hawke. Alissa’s lips pinched together to stifle the laughter when she spotted Varric swarmed with Orlesians. She turned her back when he caught her eye and her throat burned from keeping the chuckles silent. Alissa flicked her fan open to hide the amused grin on her face. She’d warned the dwarf that Orlais was a hot market for his serials, but he chose to believe his publisher.
“Alissa, do try not to embarrass our family tonight,” Adam hissed from beside her. All humor evaporated from her and she sent him a quiet but seething glare from behind her fan. Of all her family why did she have to attend with Adam? Alissa rolled her eyes and scoffed before she snapped her fan closed and poked him with the end of it.
“I’m not the one who is ten sheets to the wind. You’d best get Bram under control if you want to discuss embarrassments.” Adam’s lip curled but Alissa merely turned her head boredom settling onto her face. Alissa wished she could find a way to casually push Bram off the cliffs but Adam was watching her too carefully for that. Almost as if he knew she’d seriously try. Well, he isn’t wrong. Alissa slapped her fan against her palm before turning on her heel. The midnight fabric of her skirt swirled around her ankles hemmed with pearls and shimmering silver lace, the slit giving a peek at her shapely thigh before falling shut again, glittering under the candlelight in the courtyard. Alissa chose the darker color to try and blend in, but she hadn’t anticipated Aurora switching their outfits at the last second. Alissa went with it because she knew how much her sister hated any skin showing, while she didn’t care. Alissa just didn’t appreciate Orlesians staring at her chest like slobbering beasts. She ran her gloved fingers over the edge of her fan, carefully inspecting the dark engraved wood. Alissa wore only one thing and that was a pair of earrings Hawke had given her a year ago.
Adam’s hand lashed out and grabbed her arm above her gloves, squeezing until she was sure bruises would be left. Alissa looked down at his hand before up at his face, slow and measured. The quiet threat in her eyes had him quickly dropping his hand, but he spoke harshly and quietly. “Mind your tongue.”
“Hah.” Alissa scoffed at the very idea that Adam was trying to tell her what to do. That threat meant very little to her when she couldn’t give two shits about any sort of Trevelyan honor. Not when her family cast her aside at the first chance they got.
“I mean it Alissa,” Adam hissed quietly. Alissa tossed her head and pointed her fan at his chin menacingly. He swallowed nervously as the hard edge poked just under his chin, cutting into the soft jowls there.
“Don’t think you can order me around Adam. I won’t hesitate to make a scandal so great that father will strike my name from the register. Just think of what your punishment will be if I do that. After all, you’re here to try and keep the leash around my neck, aren’t you?” Alissa asked with a sly grin. Adam narrowed his eyes at her, identical in color to her own. Alissa always hated that they had the same eye color.
“You’ve made your point. Just remain out of trouble and I won’t have to tell father what you’re up to.” Alissa scoffed and turned away from Adam. She was bored of him and his pompous attitude already. As if she was the one who brought the family shame. She was according to her father, but she wasn’t the only Trevelyan sibling with skeletons rattling in the closet. She just chose not to hide hers unlike Adam. Alissa glanced over her shoulder watching Adam sauntering up to Orlesian nobility. She narrowed her eyes before turning away and walking over towards Varric. At least she could get decent conversation with the dwarf.
“Well, well. If it isn’t my favorite dwarf.” Varric choked on his whiskey at the sound of the familiar voice behind him. He turned and saw Alissa standing there with her hair falling in waves around her shoulders and a mischievous smile on her lips. Lips painted a deep crimson that only brought out the color of her hair more. Hawke was going to kill him if he found out Alissa was there. But… Why? Varric paused at the question, why was Alissa Trevelyan at an Orlesian duke’s home?
“Dimples! What are you doing here?” Varric asked around his coughs. Alissa pointed her fan behind her and he spotted her older brother. “Ah. You got an invite.” Varric felt the irritation radiating off her in waves and realized the situation.
“I did. Now, you must tell me why Hawke is here,” Alissa said with a grin. Varric winced and averted his gaze. “Oooh, he’s not looking at me. That just tells me this is juicy.”
“Sorry Dimples. It’s complicated.” Varric shrugged and Alissa huffed in annoyance. It was always complicated when it came to Hawke. The man was hot and cold to her every single day. If she didn’t like needling him in her free time she’d completely give up on the man.
“When is it ever simple?” Alissa retorted. He winced and glanced over to where Hawke and Tallis were. “Is that Bann Teagan of Ferelden?” Varric followed her gaze and saw Hawke talking to him. “And Garrett Hawke. Hmm. The night just got so much more interesting.”
“Dimples, wait.” Varric reached out and grabbed her wrist. Alissa looked down at his hand before looking up into his eyes. Hers narrowed dangerously and he released her with a mumbled apology.
“Hmph, here I thought the night was saved from being tedious. Seems I was wrong. Have a good evening Varric,” Alissa told him curtly before she turned away from him. Varric winced at the cold departure wondering how he was going to explain this one to Hawke.
“Alissa, you look angry.” Alissa looked over into a face identical to hers in surprise.
“I’m not angry. I’m just annoyed,” she replied grumpily. Aurora wore her hair up in a proper updo that was currently in fashion, along with a demure dress of dark emerald. Alissa slammed her fan into her palm and sneered as Bram approached. Aurora coughed to hide her chuckle when her husband was chased off by the mean look on Alissa’s face. “Guess Bram hasn’t forgotten I promised to gut him if he ever hurt you. Makes sense why he never gets within arm’s reach nowadays.”
“Alissa. You promised,” Aurora whispered softly. Alissa scoffed and propped her hands on her hips.
“I promised you that I wouldn’t hurt him. I had my fingers crossed that day. Same with Matthew. You don’t honestly think we want that man strutting around like a peacock crowing like he owns the world? Not when he hurts you.” Alissa’s lip curled back in a snarl when Bram approached again with champagne glasses.
“I come bearing an offering for my dear sister-in-law.” Alissa flicked her wrist, using the fan to upend the champagne glass back over his suit.
“Oops. Clumsy me.” Alissa flicked the fan open to hide her smile as Bram’s fist tightened on the other glass. Aurora rushed forward and Alissa saw his hand jerk back. “Touch her and I’ll make you a damned eunuch right here in front of Duke Prosper’s courtyard.”
“Alissa!” Aurora hissed but Alissa ignored her twin and focused on Bram. She saw the sweat on his forehead and the way his lips trembled as he warred between fear and anger. Almost as if he was debating how accurate her words were.
“Just remember Bram. I don’t rely on my family for anything so I have absolutely nothing to lose by doing just what I say,” Alissa replied with a dangerous smile. Bram huffed and scurried off.
“Alissa. Please.” Alissa sighed and looked at Aurora.
“When you’re ready to leave that bastard come to me. I’ll get you out of the Marches and away from our family’s influence. If he ever hits you again, tell me. I won’t kill him but I’ll make him uncomfortable for a few days.” Aurora gave her a mean glare before storming away in a quiet huff. Alissa rolled her eyes and wondered why her sister was so loyal to a slimeball like Bram.
“What does father have on you that makes you stay?” Alissa whispered and hung her fan off her wrist. She accepted a glass of chilled wine from a passing servant and watched the courtyard. She needed something to make her forget about her shitty family dynamic and the helplessness she felt every time she talked to her twin. She spotted Garrett talking to a guard and the elf slipping past said guard. Her curiosity was piqued and she found herself heading that way.
“Getting in will be harder than I thought. If only we had an actual noble with us,” the elf whispered to Hawke. Alissa paused at that. What was Hawke doing trying to break into the Duke’s house? That was dangerous. Even she wouldn’t attempt that without a good reason.
“I don’t know any nobles here,” Hawke answered. The hurt sliced through her and she swallowed it down. Alissa watched the two slip away to the shadows as she approached.
Trevelyan!? Hawke’s panicked thoughts showed on his face. Tallis looked up at him before at the noblewoman that was speaking to the guard. She was pretty and her voice was cultured. She assumed Hawke knew this woman.
“My lady, the duke has given us explicit instructions to not let anyone in. My deepest apologies,” he said with a quick bow towards her. Alissa scoffed and turned on her heel, leaving without acknowledging the guard. Tallis saw the way the guard started sweating and smirked.
“Do you know that lady Hawke?”
“I don’t!” Garrett whispered harshly. He didn’t want Alissa to get tangled up with whatever plot Tallis had cooking in her head. Absolutely not. If she got involved it would turn into a bigger mess due to her status as a noblewoman.
“There’s a secret entrance to the left of the guard. Search the hedges for a small opening in the iron fence. It’ll let you in the kitchen corridor.” Tallis and Hawke both jumped at the sound of Alissa’s voice. Hawke looked up in alarm only to see her looking down at them in amusement.
“How did you know that my lady?” Tallis asked quietly.
“Hmm? Apparently, the countess thought I was looking for a spot for a tryst. Why I have no idea, but she told me about it. It’s not a well known spot according to her so you shouldn’t encounter any guards,” Alissa replied in kind. Tallis straightened and looked at Hawke before asking Alissa one more question.
“How can you be sure there won’t be any guards?”
“Noblewomen value their honor above all else. No lady worth her salt would choose a tryst spot that would get her caught,” Alissa said with a grin. Tallis laughed and agreed. Alissa straightened and turned to head back to the party.
Hawke reached out and grabbed her elbow. Alissa looked down at his hand before blowing out an irritated breath. “I am quite tired of being manhandled tonight.” She shook Hawke’s hand off and looked over her shoulder at him irritably.
“Wait! I’ve got it,” Tallis said excitedly. “You two distract the guards and I’ll sneak past them to unlock the door.” Alissa bit down the visceral insult she was about to hurl at Hawke’s head and turned to face Tallis. She pointed her fan at Hawke’s chin which earned her a glare.
“Hawke and I?” Alissa asked incredulously. Tallis nodded and grinned at her. “Absolutely not.”
“It would be the best way to get around the guards. Hawke and I need to get into the chateau. It’s important,” Tallis told her hurriedly. Alissa lowered her arm and crossed her arms under her chest. She sighed internally and wondered how she was about to be suckered into yet another chaotic mess that Hawke landed himself in. Though, it would liven up her evening considerably. Adam and Bram were currently ten sheets to the wind and wouldn’t notice a wyvern walking in front of them, let alone her slipping away.
“You don’t have to get involved Trevelyan,” Hawke said quietly. Alissa slapped her fan against her palm with a wide grin. That sealed it.
“I’ll be glad to help you, my lady.” Alissa’s grin widened at the growing panic on Hawke’s face. “Shall we, my lord?” Alissa asked holding out her elbow despite his glare. Hot enough to melt iron but it merely amused her.
“You two get into position and I’ll wait for the right moment to snatch the keys from the guard.” Alissa resisted the urge to snort in laughter as Hawke glared down at the top of her head. “Hawke, this won’t work if you’re staring daggers at Lady Trevelyan.”
“Feel free to call me Alissa. Lady Trevelyan is my mother, and I’m not picky about using my title.” Alissa waved her hand dismissively despite Hawke’s quiet breath for patience. Tallis nodded and faded into the shadows. Alissa turned to face Hawke, only slightly irritated that even in heels the top of her head barely brushed his chin.
“Why are you here Alissa?” Hawke asked her. He shifted his weight until her back was against the stone wall of the chateau. Alissa bit the inside of her cheek when he leaned in closer. Heat rolled off him in waves and she wanted to pull him until there wasn’t a single inch between them. Her body ached and thighs clenched when one of his hands rested on her hip, just above the slit in her dress.
“I was dragged here against my will,” Alissa answered in a quiet whisper. “By my older brother.” Hawke was silent for a beat and sighed.
“Truly?” Alissa jerked her head towards his face glaring at him.
“Well, I certainly didn’t follow you here. I didn’t even know you’d gotten an invitation until I saw you and your elf friend running around the courtyard.” Garrett’s fingers dug into her hip and she swallowed at the burst of heat low in her belly. A shudder went down her back but she refused to give in.
Hawke’s answer was cut off when they heard the crunch of gravel behind them. Alissa stiffened as they heard the guards approaching, complaining about the shift roster the duke gave them. She held her breath, twisting her fingers in Hawke’s shirt with her heart beating loudly in her ears.
“Shit, they’re coming this way.” They both heard Tallis and Hawke cursed quietly. The sound of their boots grew louder and Alissa realized they were about to turn the corner.
“Quick. They’re almost here,” Alissa hissed. She reached up and grabbed his cheeks. “Kiss me and for Maker’s sake, make it believable Hawke.” She slanted her lips across his, shuddering at the scrape of his beard against her skin. Her fingers slid into his hair, tangling in the thick dark locks.
Garrett was stunned for all of a second. His hands reached down, parting the dress until his palms cupped warm flesh and then he lifted. Alissa let out a soft squeak before she grasped onto him like a burr. He didn’t give her a second to settle before his lips covered hers. His fingers squeezed when her fingers ran through his hair. He just wanted to get closer, until he couldn’t tell where she began and he ended.
“Oh! My lord! My lady! Our apologies!” The guards skidded to a stop seeing Garrett’s back. Alissa’s shoe was half off her foot, but Hawke made sure they wouldn’t see her. The guards bowed and scurried away whispering about getting in trouble with the duke.
“I got the keys,” Tallis whispered as she stepped out of the bushes.
Alissa squirmed to get down, pushing against Hawke’s shoulder. He reluctantly set her on the ground, watching as she set her dress to rights again. “Good luck on your mission tonight.” Tallis pointed to her lip and Alissa cursed before wiping the smudged lipstick with her thumb. Tallis nodded and gave her a thumbs up after she fixed it.
“Do you want to come with us my lady?” Tallis asked. Alissa quickly shook her head.
“Missing for a few moments is fine, but if I were to disappear for too long my annoying brother will look for me.” As if on cue they heard a deep voice calling her name. “See?”
“Alissa.” Hawke reached for her but she stepped away.
“Don’t worry. Adam wouldn’t dare lay a hand on me. He knows better.” Alissa grinned and turned towards the courtyard. “If you need any extra help towards the end of the evening I’ll be glad to give you a hand Hawke. But if I have to break you out of jail in an evening dress then you will owe me big time.” She clasped her hands behind her back before walking down the path leading back to the courtyard.
She did, in fact, have to help break Hawke out of jail in her evening gown. Varric came along with her to rescue Tallis and Hawke from the duke’s dungeon.
So I finished my DA2 replay, and I had wondered if I would feel differently after taking my time with it, and with the perspective of Veilguard. And yes, in small ways I do, but about the series and about Anders, I don't. That is to say: I think Veilguard is a fucking fantastic capper to the series (I mean, pray there is more, "hope for the best, expect the worst" as the Mel Brooks song goes), and Anders is relatably angry, even if the "betrayal" is frustrating and heart-breaking.
Also, there's just too much Dragon Age just the same way there's too much Tolkien, it's just that I can relisten to Tolkien via audiobook while I work and don't have time to constantly replay Dragon Age to absorb every little detail that my broken brain forgets (and I'm pretty good with lore) and I wish parts of this fandom were more curious than scathing about things they've obviously forgotten. Or skipped through, according to some of them, because I guess the context of dialogue and a cut scene isn't necessary for some of them to weigh in on things.
Word vomit of notes below the break:
First of all.
Can these two just fuck already. Watching Cassandra go from throwing him around to absolutely ENTHRALLED by Varric's complete bullshit is just going to make it so much better when I hit the "Guilty Pleasures" quest again in DA:I. This woman is SEDUCED by his story-telling, and you *cannot* convince me he wasn't gagging on his power trip.
Second.
I never played Mark of the Assassin before, and had completely forgotten Felicia Day was in DA2, and laughed like hell. I really enjoyed it. I haven't really used a stealth option in a game since leaving Skyrim for other stuff (do we ever really leave Skyrim?) and it was really fun, but I think the wyvern at the end of the DLC was actually the best fight in the entire game, even more than Corypheus. It hinted at the dragon battles to come in Veilguard. Also, I loved how Anders' dialogue got more relaxed outside of Kirkwall, like shedding the city let him loosen up. The back and forth with Hawke about his fantasy for being rescued was completely unhinged - after I accused Hawke of being feral and lacking social graces, I've decided the two of them match each other's freak and they're fine.
Third.
All the people who were losing their minds about the line "A crow never abandons a contract" and acting like the devs forgot Zevran.
He literally addresses it in the game. I keep having these moments where shit that people bitched about regarding Veilguard is addressed right *there.*
"The crows do like saying that, but I am living proof it's a lie."
No one actually forgot, but I'm sure the Dellamorte's wish to the Maker a motherfucker could.
When people complain the writing in Veilguard is too modern, I'm going to remember Hawke complaining exactly like this. She sounds like I do when I'm side-eyeing my friends in the year of our Maker 2025.
Fourth.
I had planned on romancing Blackwall this DA:I run, finally, because I'm a little obsessed with this Warden throughline from Anders to Blackwall to Davrin. From a cage, to hope/redemption, to a more meaningful path of positive change and impact.
They both haunt Veilguard's narrative and dialogue.
And then of course:
hrm.
Fifth.
I do hope we get another DA. Or supplementary material. Because I want to know what the fuck is going on with this story I had forgotten the details of, especially with the decision regarding the Nadas Dirthalen.
These two fucking idiots. I can't believe in different lives I've schtupped them both. (I can absolutely believe it)
Sixth.
The worst part of Meredith is she sounds like conservative family members of mine. 'Better to punish the innocent than risk even one guilty person go free', rather than the opposite. To them it sounds so reasonable. To us, it's abhorrent to punish everyone else for other people's crimes.
I couldn't bring myself to feel betrayed by Anders, even though I tried to play my Hawke as I think she would have felt: betrayed by the secret-keeping, if nothing else. The shock and hurt at the innocent lives. But it's hard not to feel an understanding when I sit here in a political situation with - maybe not less fraught, but at least less fantastical - implications and certainly still feel like violence is inevitable and we are way past the point of compromise and words.

Oh wow look what a surprise, it's Varric whoda thought?
I mean like let's be real. If nobody got me, I know Varric's got me. He is one of if not the funniest companions, if you're his friend, he will do insane things for you, and for Hawke specifically, he is an anchor and a light, they share a deep connection and lean on each other in their hardest times.
Varric is just a great guy who downplays himself a lot and he and Hawke should kiss end post
Hey hot take but I really don’t want a Varric romance in dreadwolf. To me, if Varric was ever going to give up Bianca for anyone it would’ve been Hawke, like you’re gonna tell me some new random protagonist gets to just strut in and romance Varric when HAWKE couldn’t??? Absolutely not.
If a Varric romance route was ever going to be made it should’ve been in da2.
On that note: DA2 REMAKE PLEASE BIOWARE!! IT’S DEVELOPMENT TIME WAS CRIMINALLY SHORT! They could’ve done (and could do) so much more with proper time and budget PLEASE
