2016 🥀
Making a Tabletop game box (Part 1)
So I went insane, like completely. And when I was laying down to have some rest in the noon of 13th of April, I saw a image of gamebox for my ttrpg that I need to made.
SKETCH
So I started drawing this shit
This was my idea for the box itself. It's a testing kit, with all that DM needs to make a good session.
First of all I need art of characters, because my game is about normal humans (and not really humans) that living in post-nuclear-war-world.
This is what I got. One of this character I showed in my other post. Firstly I was just making random characters, but after some thinking I thought that it would be cool if they would travel together. So now they a team.
COLOURING
Next I was trying to make vector art in CorelDraw, but I fucked up so I scrapped it and was trying to finish it in photoshop
Btw, this is what this art was supposed to look like. Her name is Liana Key. She is terrible person. I hate her so much, but it was one of most detailed characters in my campaign.
This was my second time. I finished this and was like "this shit looks like shit". I think the problem was the contrast of the colours. So I redrawn the art and I finally liked the third attempt.
After that I played with some colours.
INSPIRATION
So...Mostly I was inspired by arts of Kropotov Roman and Adrien Lucas that were made for DEATHLOOP. This came from the fact that the character art in my campaign was inspired by the game's poster. So the inspiration for the characters on the box came from there.
This what I got after finishing art and adding this comic-like shading. It look better with it than with out, trust me
MAIN LANDSCAPE
After drawing cool dudes I needed to add Landscape that works as background.
Landscape was a choice for background cause player rulebook had cover art like this, and this was cool. Like world inside you, you're the world and other shit
So I started drawing and got some landscapes. Two of them I posted here. Also I made secret art on the bottom of box. And I will not show it
MAKING LAYOUT
So after I got all arts I entered CorelDraw and started connecting things based on box of Root. So sizes of top was 225mm X 290mm.
I made layout for top and bottom of the box. Probably its just rectangles with different sizes and arts.
MAKING OF BOX ITSELF (Finally!!)
I made short list of things I need to buy, inside my big head. Also I was basing process on what I saw on local board game producers. But scaled down to 1 thing.
I buyed 2mm binder board. I only found it in A4 format, so I scaled down my ambitions and sizes of box. After that I marked the cardboard with a pencil so I would become two piece box.
It was Saturday so only one printing worked. So when I come to them with my crap they said "You want us to brake our blades go fuck yourself" or smth like that.
So I waited for Monday and got in printing that was located like in 5 meters from local tabletop shop. So they was used to people like me and cut board for me and paid only 0.1 denarius after they told me to never come back :p
After that I glued this shit and mad a bottom half of the box. Probably so I can build top half around it and box would like actually be a box
After gluing I taped box with tape. You can do it before gluing if you ever want to become insane like me.
Also there is two ways
Make a frame from side pieces and then glue it to top/bottom
Glue all pieces to top/bottom so you could make proper 90 degree corners
Also if you have mount cutter you would have easier job cause you can cut 45 degree angle on sides of board so pieces will become less flexible and would connect like a lego
After I glued bottom I let it rest by the window and glued top half frame from side pieces
After that I took back bottom and placed top frame around it.
And after that I found out that long side was shorter on 3mm than I needed. After an hour I fixed it with additional glued pieces that was placed in places of holes.
I glued top of the box and placed it on bottom and top braked. I remade the pieces and tried to take top off but it glued itself to bottom. After some knife brawl with box I got it separated like Siamese twins. I’m already tired and writing shit but this is the moment when I started writing and now all glue dried and I can look what I got
SHIIIIIIT MY FUCKING BOTTOM. I LAYED IN ON GLUE PALLETE
Okay I cleaned some part of it
Now the box
It's done! It opens and closes. It a little crooked like me. But still cool also like me. In next part Im gonna print top liner and finally will finish the outside of the box
Making a Tabletop game box (Part 2)
Here is 1st part of making a box where I made cardboard box and designed a print for it
PRINTING
In the Tuesday I made a order in other local printing. And today (Wednesday) got my top liner.
Also I added some tokens for fractions in game setting.
I ordered it on A2 format. And it was printed on sticker paper. Colours got a little fucked up but I don't mind.
GLUING
I cut out box parts and tried to made bottom half first. And as I expected everything went wrong. This sticker paper was so sticky that it ripped off text that I wrote on box with pencil. Everything was in bubbles and folds. I tried to remove some of it, but it still looks ugly.
Next I started preparing for making a top half. That time I folded sides of liner and lightly sliced fold lines with a knife. After that I glued short side part to the box and started gluing front side. Some of protecting non-sticky layer ripped off and I had to remove it carefully so I'll not gonna rip off other parts of print.
With some struggles I glued front and other short side then I glued long sides and pressed gently to remove bubbles.
FINAL RESULT
P. S. Probably gonna post more work on this box and game itself in the future
