Czechs begin voting in election that could return populist to power | Czech Republic
Czechs have begun voting in an election likely to oust their centre-right government, with polls favouring the populist billionaire Andrej Babiš to return to power on pledges to raise wages and improve growth while reducing aid for Ukraine. The change would boost Europe’s populist anti-immigration camp and could complicate consensus on climate policies in a country where no sitting government has…

Hanáčka wedding in the region of Moravia, Czechia
"Weddings in this region usually lasted from three days to a week, depending on the wealth of the bride's and groom's families. Celebrations were prepared for and lasted about a week beforehand. These weddings offered wealthy Haná peasants a perfect opportunity to show off in front of the entire village. On a personal level, the ceremony marked a transition: a girl became a woman, and a young man became a man; a change that was also reflected in their clothing. After the wedding, they were no longer permitted to wear the garments they had worn as unmarried individuals. To preserve this ancient tradition, local folklore groups, including the Přerov Haná group, occasionally perform reenactments of a traditional Haná wedding."

Ride of the Kings in Vlčnov, Moravia
"Today was a Ride of the Kings in Vlčnov. Beautiful photos from Fotograf Radovan Chvíla. Here is some history: The Ride of the Kings is a festival that is celebrated in Spring, at the Pentecost, in Moravia, the south-east of the Czech Republic. In 2011, it was added to the UNESCO. It is celebrated annually in the village of Vlčnov (pop.3,000).
The ceremony begins with a religious service and the approval of the Mayor, followed by the preparation of the costumes and decorations for the horses and riders. These are made by the women of the villages, according to traditional colors and designs unique to each place. The Ride itself is performed by young men who are between 15 and 25 years old. They are preceded and followed by singers and an honor guard wearing unsheathed swords to protect the “King”; a young boy of 10 to 15 years old, whose face is partially covered, holding a rose in his mouth. The King and his groomsmen are dressed in feminine costumes, while all the other riders wear masculine clothing. After riding through the village for a few hours, sometimes exchanging witticisms with the crowd, the participants return home then, later in the evening, meet at the “King’s House” for music and dancing.
How did it all [start]? It is probably a remnant of the pagan rites of the pre-Christian Slavs on Pentecost. Historical facts and romantic legends are added to this. The most popular is the one about the escape of the Hungarian king Matthias Korvín from Jiřík of Poděbrady. After the defeat at Bílovice, Matyáš fled towards the Hungarians, disguised in a girl’s dress. And it is said that the ride of the kings was created in memory of these events. A few cheerful details were traditionally added to this. The king has a rose in his mouth so as not to reveal himself even with his voice. I will add some videos to my stories."
A peculiar part of the Pošumaví Region
"Prácheň Region, located in the northern part of the South Bohemian Region and bordering the Plzeňsko Region. It encompasses several micro-regions: Strakonicko, Vodňansko, Protivínsko, and Volyňsko.
Prácheň Region played an important role in our history, as it was once one of the regions of the Kingdom of Bohemia. The area gets its name from the former Prácheň Castle near Horažďovice. Today, you will find its ruins and may still recognise the remnants of its bastions, walls, and towers. Legends claim that a treasure was buried somewhere beneath the castle walls.
Prácheň Region experienced harsh winters. The locals adapted their clothing to these conditions. Women wore scarves, often tied under the chin and covering the mouth. This provided at least partial protection from the cold and wind, but also from the rapidly changing temperatures as they moved from the chamber to the stables. Gradually, however, local women began to wear scarves tied in this way even in summer.
Like in other parts of the Šumava, there was a significant German influence here. Evidence of this is the German equivalent of the mentioned unique scarf: “Mäulentejchal”. A local peculiarity became the “kaftan”, a skirt sewn together with a bodice."
