The original plan I had for him is that he would be infected with a specific variant of "the blight", a disease of the soul that was gonna play a bigger part in later parts of the story! His variant makes him regenerate after dying, no matter how damaged he gets! A consequence of this though is that he literally can't die, like ever. Other pokemon that have his variant, mostly ones that aren't meant to be immortal, would eventually go mad with eternity. Originally, I wanted a reason to have him be a significant part of the story without worrying about him croaking after like, 60 years or however long it takes for reunicluses (reunicli?) to live, especially since this story would take place over a period of hundreds of years.
