Is there a term for not-quite syllables at the ends of some words? I'd thought of these as morae, but that seems to be something else. For me they show up in the release of sentence-final stops. "Rink", "top", "bed", "legislate", and "hillock" all seem to have an extra almost-syllable in a release of air that follows the final stop. They seem to occur if the next syllable is the start of a new sentence, or if there is no next syllable. (Native English speaker from Ontario.)
It’s actually called the audible release of the stop. It’s kind of assumed to be there by default. When it’s not, that’s indicated in the IPA. So, for example, [tʰɑp] is the more or less normal pronunciation of “top”, and [tʰɑp̚] is how you’d transcribe it if you don’t release the [p] at all. The symbol looks kind of like a small version of the top half of ]. In some languages speakers routinely don’t release stops at the end of words, and the sound (or absence of release) is a characteristic piece of the overall sound of the language. English is definitely not one of those languages. (Also, this is most commonly associated with voiceless rather than voiced stops.)
