Wisdom from the Early Cynics, Diogenes 30
When someone reproached Diogenes with his exile, his reply was, "Nay, it was through that, you miserable fellow, that I came to be a philosopher."
Again, when someone reminded him that the people of Sinope had sentenced him to exile, "And I them," said he, "to home-staying."
Once he saw an Olympic victor tending sheep and thus accosted him: "Too quickly, my good friend, have you left Olympia for Nemea."
Being asked why athletes are so stupid, his answer was, "Because they are built up of pork and beef."
He once begged alms of a statue, and, when asked why he did so, replied, "To get practice in being refused."
In asking alms—as he did at first by reason of his poverty—he used this form: "If you have already given to anyone else, give to me also; if not, begin with me."
—Diogenes Laërtius, 6.49

Cynics dipped in truth
struggling hard against hope,
sure of a fresh miss,
denying any bullseye
is reckoned worth aiming at.

“And then everybody applauded right 🙄?”
There is literally nothing implausible about their story and you have no evidence to contradict them, nor any reason to be suspicious because they’re not asking anything if you. This is not a politician trying to buy your vote or an ad for some “wondrous” device or a CEO claiming they can’t possible pay more.
This is a random person on the internet that is sharing a story they find funny or interesting, and you lose absolutely nothing by either believing them, or at least not trying to tear them down for no reason.
You’re just a cynical coot who thinks the world must only be boring.
okay as a 20 year old trans guy i'm /real/ tired of the whole 'kids r lame' trend in the queer community. ain't funny y'all. personifying plants isn't cute and claiming that people who start families are hets is not as radical as you think it is.
i hear it time and time again from people my age that 'they would never have kids' and how expensive they are and how gay it is to want pets over children. don't get me wrong. i love pets too.
but they don't take the place of children and neither do children take the place of pets. the nonverbal and non judgemental support animals can provide is not to be forgotten or cheapened. but they both have different dynamics with their caretakers/guardians/parents and ones own insecurity does not mean it's fair to overlook this. raising a child and raising a puppy are not synonyms for each other. neither is being a parent or guardian and petowner.
the reason adopting/birthing children was extremely rare in the queer community until recently is quite simple--and it is not because the gays hate pampers. homophobic and transphobic society and its policies disallowed for such a family unit to exist.
refusing to acknowledge the social prejudices within late 20th century western/imperialist culture is both immature and ignorant of the current young generation of queer folk. it is not and was not the intellect or logic of 20th century queers that led them to be childless but the homophobic, transphobic, racist, nuclear society that prohibited nontraditional family structures from thriving (not to mention the dissolution of co-housing, multi-generational living and gentrification but one rant at a time)
being so nihilistic and convinced of capitalism's grip that you believe the only way a person can contribute to a unit is financially or laboriously is quite honestly ableist and frankly capitalist. human beings are social by nature and thrive on both nuturing and being nutured.
seeing debt in a baby and relief in a fourth cat simplifies the struggle and pain of those who do not want children just as much as those who do and it lessens the blame on the system that fails children and parents and the childless.
