Maverick stood in the front of the other pilots going over mission strategies when a young man entered in the back. For a moment, he watched but kept on about flight patterns until the man kept inching forward.
After seeing the man take another step, Maverick sighed and asked, âAM Peterson, is there something you need? This is a classified meeting.â
The AM sunk his neck into his shoulders as multiple higher ranks turned their heads and looked at him. âUh, yes, Captain Mitchell, sir.â His cheeks flushed as he fumbled with his hands. âItâs, um, about your daughter, sir.â
Maverickâs brows furrowed and he ignored the way that both Hangman and Rooster sat up a little straighter. âIs she okay?â
The AMâs mouth opened and closed, then he asked, âDefine okay, sir.â
âIs she alive and breathing,â he deadpanned.
âYes, sir, she is.â
âThen youâre dismissed. Iâll get to her later.â He turned back to the board and the AM hurried up, leaning into Maverickâs ear as he whispered quietly; Maverick turned and looked at him. âPlease, tell me youâre joking.â
The poor AM looked as if he were about to cry. âSir, I wish I was.â
He sighed and rubbed his temples. âOkay. Iâll go now.â
As he started walking down the middle, Hangman and Rooster both stood up and started following and he looked between them. âWhat the hell are you two doing?â
âItâs about Heretic,â Rooster said with a look of disbelief. âWeâre coming.â
Maverick looked at Rooster. âYou, I get coming along.â He then looked at Hangman. âYou, I donât, and I donât like the implication either.â
Hangman shrugged and in cocky fashion, replied, âProbably shouldnât.â
He ignored Hangman as they strode through the base and into medical where Heretic was laid up in a bed with her foot in a wrap and propped up by a pillow.
âHeeeeeeeey, dad,â she greeted. âFunny meeting you here.â
âAM Peterson said you were injured.â
âI told him not to tell you. I said I was fine.â
Maverick walked up and gestured to her foot. âHow?â
âHow or why?â she asked back.
âBoth.â
She craned her neck to the two pilots behind him and Hangman quickly pulled the curtain around them. âWell, you see, what had happened was, AM Peterson and I were fucking around playing chicken with the nail gun.â
âOh my God,â Maverick sighed. âDid you shoot yourself in the goddamn foot with a nail gun?â he hissed.
âWell, actually, AM Peterson shot me.â She looked at him proudly. âIâm no fucking chicken.â
Maverick rubbed a hand over his face and bent over, kissing her head. âYouâre an idiot. I love you, Iâm glad youâre okay, but youâre an idiot.â
âThank you, Captain,â she nodded with pride as he yanked back the curtain and walked out of the medical wing.
Hangman grinned as he leaned on the top of the bed. âGuess this explains why you werenât at debrief.â
âYeahâŚnow that I think about it, I shouldâve probably been at debrief.â
Rooster crossed his arms over his chest. âWhatâd you tell the corpsmen?â
âThat I had the nail gun at a wrong angle, and it shot through my foot.â
âYou know those things come with warning labels about playing with them, yeah?â he asked, and she grinned.
âNothing ventured, nothing gained.â She looked around. âSpeaking of venturing, can you guys get me out of here?â
Hangman snorted. âYeah, pretty girl, weâll get you out of here.â
âThank you. The food here sucks.â
Before either man could help her, a voice echoed from behind, âNeither of you will help Heretic out of the medical wing. In fact, you will return to debrief like the other pilots.â
All three of them jumped and they spun, watching as the Vice Admiral stood there with his arms over his chest.
âVice Admiral Simpson,â she smiled nervously. âWhat a treat for you to pay a lowly lieutenant a visit.â He narrowed his gaze on her as Hangman and Rooster began inching backwards. âNo! Donât you twoâ!â they practically sprinted out of the room, and she gave the Vice Admiral a hesitant smile. âVice Admiral, have I ever told you that you are an incredibly good-looking gentleman? And that any woman would be lucky to have a moment of your time?â
âFlattery wonât work on me, Lieutenant Mitchell.â
âYes, sir,â she mumbled, looking down and he walked up to her bedside.
âDid you really shoot yourself in the foot with a nail gun?â
She pursed her lips. âIf I exercise my fifth amendment right does that, yâknow, express guilt?â
âYes.â
âThen yes sir, I shot myself in the foot with a nail gun.â
Cyclone sighed and looked up at the ceiling. âWhat is it with you two Mitchellâs?â
âIs that rhetorical orâŚâ she trailed off when she saw the glare on his face. âI won the bet, if it makes you feel vindicated sir.â
âHow much?â
âTwo-fifty.â She pulled out the money and showed it to him; then she said, âIâll give you one-twenty-five if you pretend I shot myself not playing chicken but fixing something.â
Cyclone looked at her for a solid moment, then he held out his hand and she smugly put the bills in it; as he pocketed it, he warned, âDo not, let this happen again, Lieutenant.â
âAye-aye, Vice Admiral, sir.â As he walked off, she called out, âCan I buy you a beer sometime, sir?â
âNice offer, Lieutenant, but Iâm a little too old for you.â
âFine wine ages with time, sir. Can confirm itâs aging you finely,â she flirted, and he chuckled as he turned out the door.

You were sitting in a low backed chair on the beach, half watching the Squad play some game that looked like a cross between Red Rover and Tackle Football, and half reading a book.
The absolute mess of the game in front of you was holding your attention better than the book your coworker had suggested you read -your tastes in literature were not the same- so you clocked Mav coming towards you immediately.
âY/N,â the Captain greeted, somehow making plopping down in the sand at your feet look graceful. âGood book?â
You snorted, flipping it shut and tossing it (gently) to the side.
âNot to me, Mav. Not my speed. Watching your ducklings try and murder each other in broad daylight however â that is incredibly entertaining.â
Mav barked a laugh, turning his head to look out at his team.
âBuilds moral,â he said conversationally.
âLets them get in pot shots at each other without being discharged, you mean,â you grinned as Phoenix tackled Hangman to the ground.
âLike I said,â Mav turned and smirked at you, âbuilds moral.â
It was your turn to laugh. Well, at least he had his Squadâs best interests at heart.
âYou heard about the Navy Gala?â Mav asked suddenly and you gave him a wide grin.
âAre you kidding? Between the moaning, groaning, complaining and dress shopping, yeah. Itâs been mentioned once or twice.â
The Daggers had all been invited by the COMPACFLT himself -you secretly figured this was a convoluted way of Ice making sure his wingman actually showed up- and were both excited and dreading it.
Lots of good food and dancing, but lots of high brass and pressure.
You didnât envy them one bit.
âYou going with anyone?â came the next question and you snorted.
âUh, no. The Invincible Iceman didnât invite me so I donât have to go,â you grinned. Youâd had a lot of fun rubbing that in the Squadâs faces. High society parties were not your forte. And since you werenât Navy, you were off the hook.
âNow, Iâm surprised at that,â Mac said, eyes boring into you from behind his signature shades. âI figured one of the guys would try to snap you up quick as their Plus One.â
You gave Maverick an exaggerated once over. âOh, they did. Almost all of them. But Iâm very choosy.â
The booming laugh from Maverick carried across the beach and you leaned back in your chair satisfied.
âWould you like to go?â Maverick asked after a few moments and you tilted your head.
âIf this is your round about way of asking me to accompany you, Mav, the answer is absolutely not. Iâve seen Pennyâs dress for the gala and Iâm pretty sure sheâd poison me if she couldnât wear it.â
Cue another laugh from Maverick.
âNo,â he explained with a smirk, ânot with me. But I do have someone in mind if youâd be interested in going.â
You looked at the Captain dubiously.
ââŚ.Sarah didnât put you up to this, did she?â
The moment you met Tom and Sarah Kazansky, at a party the Daggers had thrown for Mav, theyâd taken you under their wing and both had been very interested in your love life since. Or lack thereof at this point.
If you met one more âfriend of the familyâ, you were going to scream.
Maverickâs chuckle brought your attention back to him.
âNo,â he assured you, âSarah didnât put me up to this. But, I know she and Ice would be glad to see you there. Ice thought the same thing I did: that youâd be a Plus One for a Dagger, which is why he didnât invite you specifically. Then you wouldnât have to find someone or go alone.â
Huh. Well, that was nice of Ice. It would have sucked to get an official invite and then try to figure out who to take. Itâs not like you had close friends outside the Squad. You wouldnât have wanted to go alone and you would have never heard the end of it if you turned down the invitation.
âAnd what poor man do you have in mind?â you asked, mentally rehearsing a multitude of reasons why you couldnât go. Everything from watering your plant to a staged family emergency.
Maverick stared at you for a moment, before saying nonchalantly, âCyclone.â
Your brain drew a blank on your rehearsed reasons.
âCyclone,â you repeated dully. Then, âCyclone?!â
Maverick drew his sunglasses down a bit on his nose and peered over the rims at you.
âNo?â he asked lightly, though his gaze was searching.
You just stared at Maverick.
Cyclone? The Air Boss? Youâd met the man a few times- hard not to when your circle now contained the Commander of the Pacific Fleet and a dozen direct reports of Admiral Simpsonâs- but besides polite small talk, you hadnât engaged much with him.
He was very stoic, accomplished and stupidly handsome- you got tongue tied quick around that man. And besides, you werenât as straight laced as he seemed to be. You were professional when needed and not a total idiot, thank you very much, but you still had a wickedly sharp tongue that you used whenever possible. You were not the quiet, meek or stoic woman you could see someone like Cyclone bringing along. You were way too mouthy.
And Mav thought you being on his arm all night would be a good idea?!
On his arm⌠that was something to think about though.
âIâm not entirely sure I want to be a part of another prank of yours against the guy,â you finally settled on.
Maverick snorted.
âDespite apparent popular belief, Iâm not dumb enough to pull a prank on my direct superior. WellâŚnot anymore. And buzzing the tower doesnât count.â
âThat last bit sounds a bit rehearsed,â you muttered and gave Maverick an angelic smile when he flicked a little sand your way.
âThereâs no pressure, Y/N,â Maverick assured you. âI just figured itâd be good for Cyclone not to go alone this year. I hear that Admiral Chaney and his wife got divorced and sheâs been on the warpath- flirting and sleeping with everyone she can.â
âAh,â you grinned, âso thatâs it. This is a decoy mission. If Iâm with poor Cyclone, the former Mrs. Admiral Chaney canât sink her claws into him.â
Maverick gave a shrug. âEh, two birds. You get to go to a Gala and see everyone and Cyclone gets to spend the evening with someone whoâs not insane. Win win.â
âHuh. Well, thanks for not thinking Iâm insane, Mav. That means a lot. And really, your strategic powers are to be applauded- sounds like you thought of every angle.â
âI tried,â Maverick grinned. âSo can I tell Cyclone he has a date?â
You gave a theatrical sigh, even as you grinned and nodded, though the sudden butterflies in your stomach almost made you nauseous.
âI suppose, Mav. The man has got a date.â
/////\\\\\
Apparently, Maverick had not only told Cyclone you were going with him as his date, but everyone else as well, because youâd been essentially kidnapped the next day by Sarah and Penny to dress shop.
Sarah had been beside herself, horrified that she had never thought to bring you and Cyclone together. Maverick beating her to the punch was unforgivable and while you tried to assure her that she was still a great matchmaker and Maverick hadnât meant it like that, you were going as a decoy after all, she wouldnât be swayed.
You and Penny had shared conspiratorial smiles as Sarah Kazansky went on about Cycloneâs attributes. For practically the whole trip.
Penny -wonderful, amazing Penny- finally stepped in and changed the subject when Sarah started talking about wedding venues.
Yeah, she and Ice were far too interested in your relationship status.
But the trip had been a success- youâd found a beautiful evening gown that both women approved heartily of (and which started another of Sarahâs rants of how attractive Beau would find you) and then the night of the Gala was upon you.
All of you girls had been invited to get ready at the Kazansky house and while Halo and Phoenix were hesitant at first (you were so glad you didnât have a military rank to get in the way of friendships), you all ended up a lot closer than you started.
The ridiculously expensive champagne Sarah had laid out may have had something to do with that.
But the time came for your âdatesâ to pick you all up (including Tom- Sarah had gleefully kicked him out of the house to go get ready with Mav- she was adamant she would get picked up at their front door too) and you felt any lingering effects of the champagne disappear when you laid eyes on Rear Admiral Beau âCycloneâ Simpson.
Your first thought was, Dress whites should be illegal.
Your second thought was, You were not going to make it through the night without making a fool of yourself.
You always knew the man was good looking - youâd never found Khaki so attractive before â but this wasâŚWOW.
âIâm not going to be able to steer Sarah away from booking the wedding venue if you keep staring like that,â Penny quietly teased at your side and you dropped your gaze hastily.
âShuddup,â you whined quietly as the men came up to the wrap around porch, each man heading to his date.
You found yourself holding your breath as Beau approached you. You really needed to get it together and be your normal self. Maverick, the Kazanskys and the Daggers were used to sarcastic and witty Y/N. Itâd be rude to short change the Admiral.
âMiss Y/L/N,â he greeted and you felt yourself melt a bit at his voice. Youâd noticed the deep timbre before, how could you not, but something about that voice saying your name while you were going to be his date for the evening- it hit different.
Yeah, you were absolutely not making it through this night with your dignity or your sanity. He was going to make you being normal a bit difficult.
A pointed cough somewhere else on the porch jolted you out of your stupor and you figured you should probably say something back to the man. Honestly. Good thing youâd spoken to him before or else he would assume you were an idiot.
âAdmiral Simpson,â you greeted with a smile. âOr is it Rear Admiral? Honestly, there are far too many ranks for us ânormalâ people to remember.â
His deep chuckle practically made you swoon.
âBeau or Cyclone is just fine for tonight â no ranks,â the man said with a small grin that honestly did wonders for his looks. The man was ridiculously good looking when he was serious but when he smiled? Game over.
You were so screwed.
âWell thank you for that small mercy,â you quipped.
âWeâve got cars ready to take us to the Gala,â Ice said loud enough for everyone to hear and with murmurs from the assembled group, you all started to descend the stairs and head to the parked cars.
Beau offered his arm and with a smile, you looped your arm through his, waiting until most the group had already made it off the porch before following behind.
âSince you rode with Pete and myself,â Tom said to Cyclone as you passed him and Sarah on the stairs, âyou two will have to carpool with us to the Gala.â
You gave Ice an angelic smile that instantly had Sarah turning her head away to hide her smile.
You almost felt sorry for Cyclone. He seemed to be so professional all the time. And his boss was right in front of himâŚah well. Ice was too good a friend at this point for you to treat him too respectfully. And he should have known what he was getting into â they all should have.
âThat is so sweet of you, sir,â you laid it on thick, even batting your eyelashes, âbut I have already promised my date that he can drive my car to the Gala and you wouldnât want to make me a lair this early in our relationship, would you?â
The look Ice gave you made you grin even widerâ oh, now you understood why Maverick enjoyed poking at Ice. Not only was it remarkably easy, but it was fun!
âI mean, your wife is the one who mentioned this is like Prom, so Iâm not sure how Iâm supposed to have a Prom night if I donât have a back seat.â
The man standing beside you tried valiantly to turn his laugh into a cough, youâd give him that. Honestly, you werenât sure Beau had that kind of sense of humor. It was a pleasant surprise.
âY/N,â the COMPACFLT standing in front of you sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose and you laughed.
âTom, relax. Iâm kidding. WellâŚsorta. Beau and I are going to take my car. Just in case someone needs to get away for whatever reason. But weâll be right behind you guys. Scoutâs honor.â
Ice muttered something under his breath and you just smiled placidly at him. You both knew he was going to cave eventually.
âFine,â the man sighed, which made you shake your head amusedly. Like he really had any say if you took your own car. âWeâll see you there.â
You and Beau made your way to your car as Tom and Sarah headed to the car where Maverick and Penny were waiting.
âWe could have rode with them,â Beau said quietly as he opened your door for you. You grinned up at him.
âYouâve not only gotten ready with Pete, and have to spend an entire evening around him, but youâre also willing to ride to and from the Gala with him? My, my, my. Have you guys become best friends since he first started?â
Cyclone barked a laugh, shaking his head. âNot quite. I just donât want you uncomfortable.â
You gave him a sincere smile this time. âThank you, Beau. But I assure you, I feel perfectly fine driving with you. Besides, Iceâs car is small and I get carsick.â
Huffing in amusement, Cyclone finished helping you into the passenger seat of your car and then headed for the driverâs side.
âWell, it seems that Ice is taking his protector role very seriously,â the Air Boss remarked as he buckled in. At your inquisitive look, he gestured to the idling car waiting for you both.
You rolled your eyes. âIâve heard stories of Iceâs âmother-henâ tendencies when they were all in Top Gun and during their careers afterwards. I think itâs gotten worse the higher up heâs climbed the ladder.â
Beau hummed in amused agreement. âHeâs got the power now to back it up. Poor Mitchell never stood a chance.â
You laughed and then you both spent the rest of the car ride swapping stories of Pete. The man really was a menace. A lovable, competent, thoughtful menace.
Beau offered to drop you off at the front while he parked the car â he wouldnât think of the valet service doing it; true military man though and through, he wanted to know exactly where it was parked and make sure he had plenty of room for a hasty leave, just in case â but the look you leveled him with made him just grin and go park.
âIâm perfectly capable of walking through a parking lot, even in heels,â you griped good naturedly as he helped you out of the car and he gave you a dry look.
âI believe I heard some rumors about you sprinting through a parking lot after Lieutenant Seresin in heels, so I have no doubt you can walk just fine through one.â
You gaped up at him and then gave a wicked grin. âWhy Beau Simpson, I do believe this is going to be the start of a beautiful relationship.â
The man gave you a small smile, his face and eyes suddenly more serious. âI hope so,â he murmured and then seemed to shake himself out of it.
âCome along, Y/N. I shudder to think what Admiral Kazansky will do to me if weâre too much later.â
You blinked in surprise, taken aback by the mood shift, but then shrugged it off. You had all night to get him back toâŚwhatever that serious part was. Because that was something you definitely wanted to explore.
Looping your arm back through his, you both made your way to the doors of the Navy Gala. You could feel your nerves creeping back in. Youâd never been to one of these, or anything remotely like it. You werenât exactly sure what to do or how to act.
When you said as much to the man beside you, he drew you a little closer to him.
âIt can be a rather stuffy event, more political than fun most of the time, but none of us will leave you alone. Just follow my lead and weâll get the niceties over with as soon as possible. Unfortunately for you, as an Admiral, I have to greet and speak with quite a few people. But Iâll make it as painless as possible. Or drop you off with Mitchell.â
âUh, the whole reason Iâm here is to be your plus one, Beau. Canât really plus one if Iâm not with you.â
âFair enough,â the man said with what sounded like relief and then you were swept through the doors and into what felt like a thousand different conversations.
No wonder Pete never wanted to move past Captain.
/////\\\\\
âIf I have to fake smile at one more man looking at my chest, Iâm going to start throwing hands,â you groaned as you and Beau finally headed to sit at your table.
Youâd been paraded around for the last hour and a half while Beau made nice with the proper people. Youâd even been introduced to Admiral Chaney and Beau had actually tucked you further into his side when the former Mrs. Admiral Chaney was mentioned. Heâd apparently heard about her too.
âYou handled that all with remarkable calmness,â Beau observed, pulling out your chair for you. âQuite honestly, Iâd have expected something barbed to escape your lips the third time I had to repeat myself to olâ Jeffrey.â
âAh, Wandering Eyes Jeffrey. Yeah, he was about three seconds away from a broken nose,â you grumbled, relishing in the deep chuckle beside you.
âIâm sure you would have gotten off with a warning,â Beau shot back and you laughed, looking over at him.
âBeau, please do not take this the wrong way, but you are much lighter and funnier than I expected.â
The man didnât seem offended or surprised by your statement.
âAh, yes. The Air Boss persona,â he nodded, eyes meeting your own. âI admit, I am serious and all business on Base â I have to be. I have the lives of everyone there â and those deployed under my command â in my hands. There are decisions I have to make on a near daily basis that arenât easy and I canât let emotion rule. However,â here he paused as if unsure and looked down at his place setting, âI like to think Iâm not that kind of person outside of work. Admittedly, I havenât had much reason to be âlighter and funnierâ, but,â he looked up at you again, âI think that may have changed.â
You felt your eyes widen and the butterflies in your stomach spontaneously change to pterodactyls. Doing summersaults.
What.
There was no way that Air Boss Rear Admiral Beau âCycloneâ Simpson was saying what you thought he was saying.
Beau cleared his throat somewhat awkwardly and you realized you were still staring.
Your hand shot out and covered his own.
âI-wow. I was not expecting that, Beau. Not in a bad way! I justâŚI guess I never thought of myself as anything other than the decoy tonight,â you said someone self-depreciatingly. After all, thatâs what this has been set up as; you keeping away the claws of former Mrs. Admiral Chaney.
The hand under yours shifted so Beauâs fingers could intertwine with yours.
âYouâve been much more than a decoy from the moment I saw you,â Beau murmured, eyes soft and unguarded.
You gave a soft smile, giving his hand a squeeze. âThatâs good. Otherwise, my growing feelings for you would be super awkward.â
Beau gave a soft laugh, thumb stroking the back of your hand. âWhat do you say to an actual date? I come pick you up with flowers, dinner reservations, the whole thing.â
You were sure your eyes were absolutely sparkling. âIâd say that sounds like the beginning of a beautiful relationship.â
Beau raised your hand to place a soft kiss to the back of it and then rested your joined hands on his knee.
âThink Admiral Kazansky or Mitchell will be the one with the shovel talk?â he asked lightly after a moment and you snorted, thinking of matchmaker Sarah and her wedding plans sheâd already started.
âSomehow,â you grinned, eyes shining, âI doubt either one of them is the one we need to worry about.â

As the roar of jet engines faded into the distance, the tarmac at NAS Miramar buzzed with the hum of returning pilots, maintenance crews, and the lingering adrenaline of a mission well-executed. The Dagger Squad had returned victorious, and among them was Captain Pete âMaverickâ Mitchell, the legendary aviator who had once again defied expectations and survived against all odds. But despite the accolades, the heroâs welcome, and the relieved camaraderie, Maverickâs thoughts were elsewhere â drawn to the woman walking toward him, her presence as unexpected as the storm brewing inside him.Â
You.Â
He hadnât seen you in years. Not since you had left without a word, tired of the strained relationship, the half-hearted attempts at fatherhood that never quite measured up. And now, here you were, moving across the tarmac with a confidence that made his breath hitch. But it wasnât just you â his gaze was pulled to the little girl sprinting ahead of you, her laughter carrying over the commotion, and then lower, to the small swell of your belly.Â
Then he saw the man she was running to.Â
Vice Admiral Beau âCycloneâ Simpson stood tall, his normally severe expression softening as he crouched to scoop up the little girl â your daughter â who launched himself into his arms with an unbridled joy that made Maverickâs chest tighten. The manâs hand, strong and sure, settled on her back before shifting ever so briefly to your waist as you reached him. An intimately protective gesture. A husbandâs gesture.Â
Beau pressed a kiss to your temple, murmuring something only you could hear, before his sharp eyes lifted â meeting Maverickâs stare with an expression that was unreadable, save for the unmistakable glint of challenge beneath the surface. It wasnât the professional disdain Maverick was used to from the admiral. No, this was something else. Something deeply personal.Â
For a long moment, Maverick just stood there, heart hammering against his ribs, the weight of everything â your marriage, your daughter, the life you had built with a man who was supposed to be his adversary â crashing down on him all at once.Â
And then, for the first time in his life, Pete âMaverickâ Mitchell didnât know what the hell to say.Â
Beau held Maverickâs gaze for a beat longer before his focus shifted back to you, his hand never leaving you. He murmured something low, something meant only for you, and you nodded, fingers brushing over his knuckles in silent reassurance.Â
Maverick had seen a lot of things in his time, but this? Seeing you here standing beside a man like him â the very embodiment of rules and structure, of everything Maverick had spent his entire career pushing against â knocked the wind right out of him.Â
âMama, whoâs that?âÂ
The little girlâs voice snapped him back to the present, her curious eyes bouncing between you and him as she clung to Beauâs shoulder.Â
Your daughter. His granddaughter.Â
Maverick swallowed hard as you took a slow breath before stepping forward, closing the space between you. âStella, sweetheart,â you said gently, brushing a loose strand of hair from her forehead. âThis is Pete.â A pause. A hesitation so small, yet so heavy. âHeâs my father.âÂ
Stellaâs brows scrunched up, and then she looked back at Beau, as if the pieces werenât quite fitting together. âBut Daddyâs your husband.âÂ
A flicker of something â amusement, tension, or maybe just patience â passed over Beauâs face as he adjusted Stella on his hip. He didnât speak, didnât intervene, just let you take the lead.Â
Maverick cleared his throat, forcing himself to meet the little girlâs inquisitive gaze. âThatâs right,â he said, his voice rougher that heâd meant it to be. âYour dad and I⌠we know each other.âÂ
Stella considered that for a second, then, with all the bluntness of a child, asked, âAre you friends?âÂ
The silence that followed was deafening.Â
A slow, measured breath left Cycloneâs nose, and you exhaled softly, a sound that was more tired than anything. Maverick let out a low chucked, more at himself than anything else, because how the hell was he supposed to answer that?Â
You saved him from trying. âNot exactly, honey,â you said carefully, smoothing a hand over her back. âBut we do go way back.âÂ
Stella seemed to accept that answer, but her little nose scrunched up in thought. âThen why I havenât I seen him before?âÂ
Maverick flinched. Damn, this kid was sharp.Â
You hesitated, and Beauâs jaw twitched like he was biting back a response of his own. There was history here, years of it, and Maverick could feel it pressing down on him from all sides. You had moved on. You had built a life, a family, without him. And yet, here he was, standing in the middle of it, decades too late and with no idea how to fix what had already been broken.Â
Finally, you sighed, shifting closer to your husband. âItâs⌠complicated,â you admitted.
Maverick caught the way Beauâs grip tightened just slightly around your waist at that. Protective, territorial. Like he wasnât quite sure if here was where Maverick should be.Â
And hell, maybe he was right.Â
Stella seemed to think it over for a second before shrugging, apparently satisfied for now. Then, just as quickly as she put Maverick on the spot, she turned back to Beau with the boundless energy only a child could have. âCan we get ice cream now?âÂ
You huffed out a low chuckle, shaking your head. âWe just had ice cream yesterday, kid.âÂ
âBut I was really good today.â She turned big, pleading eyes on Beau, the same ones you had used on Maverick as a kid, because damn if they werenât affective.Â
Your husband sighed, clearly resigned to this fate. âWeâll see.âÂ
Stella beamed, satisfied, and wriggled out of his arms to run towards her âUncleâ Warlock and his family nearby.Â
Maverick exhaled, watching her go before turning back to you. There was still so much unsaid, so many things that wouldnât fit in the space of one conversation. But when his gaze flickered to your stomach again â he hadnât just missed your life. He had missed this one too.Â
âI didnât know,â he finally said, his voice quieter now, almost hesitant.Â
You studied him for a long moment. Silence stretched between you, but it wasnât entirely hostile. Just⌠heavy.Â
Then, Beau shifted beside you. âWe should get going.â It wasnât rude, but it wasnât exactly warm either.Â
Maverick met his eyes again, and this time, there was something new in them. Not just the usual distrust, but something deeper. A line drawn in the sand. A promise.Â

Iâm dying to see a version of All Shook Up with Cyclone đ¤Ł
Welcome Home - Cyclone x Reader
Word Count: 1.2k
Summary: To brighten things up after another long day at work you play a prank on your husband Beau, making him question not only his limited patience but how he got himself here in the first place.
Warnings: fluff, domesticity, husband! Beau, very much grumpy x sunshine energy.
Author's Note: Ask and you shall receive! Between this request and how much fun I had writing All Shook Up I couldn't help but push through my (slight) writer's block this week and do it all over again, this time about our beloved admiral, Beau.
Read on AO3
It had been a surprisingly mellow day on base, though still a thick layer of tension rested on the perpetual line of his shoulders as he exited his vehicle and made his way to the front door.
It was anything but rare to see Beau arrive home late, usually long into burning the midnight oil, uniform still pristine but mood anything but. Days spent dealing with the Daggers and general high-level nonsense he was neither at liberty to or willing to share meant your beloved husband truly did live up to his reputationâfirm, unyielding, and entirely allergic to any kind of simple, joyous fun.
Which to you, made him the perfect candidate for a prank.
His footing is steady as he crosses the yard and ascends the porch, the part of him only you got to see relieved to be home earlier than average and with tonight's sports viewing schedule already pulled up on his phone.
Though as most moments of peace seem to do in his life, that feeling is ripped away when he reaches the front door thatâŚwon't open.
His brows furrow instantly, stepping back on a heel to check the familiar porch and then further up the home's siding until the number plate set in the masonry confirms that this is, in fact, his home. He tries the door once, then again, his frustration mixing with a kind of bewilderment at how the hell he'd been seemingly locked out of the stately home he feels he frankly pays a bit too much for.
Just before his fourth go at opening the door, a sound to the left draws his attention.
Kneeling on a couch seated in front of a large window you've just slid open, you peek your head out and address the man in front of you with words spoken in a tone that sucks out whatever bit of normalcy he has left in his tired mind.
"Who are you and what is your business?" You say, half out the window and matching Beau's ever hardening gaze.
"Excuse me?"
"Who are you and what is your business?" You repeat, eyes nearly shining with silent glee.
He stares at you for a long moment. Then at the door. Then you again.
"What the hell is this?" He finally asks.
You bite back a laugh, fully committed to your display, or at minimum getting a rise out of him.
"Given your uniform and general demeanor, Mr.-" you pause, squinting to read his name plate as if you truly don't know him, "-Simpson, I regrettably have to inform you that you aren't allowed inside these quarters."
He outright scoffs at that, rubbing a tired hand over his equally tired eyes as he shifts his weight and calls upon whatever patience he has left.
"And why, exactly, is my own wife denying me entrance into my own home?" He questions flatly, just the faintest hint of exasperated tension lacing his words.
Leaning further out of the window, you clear your throat and go to speak, fully unable to hide your wide smile now.
"As explicitly stated in the Third Amendment of the United States Constitution, Iâbeing a private citizen and allâam under exactly zero obligation to quarter soldiers and other such personnel."
With a long beat of unblinking silence, Beau lets out a heavy exhale. First through his nose then forcefully from his chest until air escapes out both passageways as his expression darkenedâa sign of his building frustration.
"This isn't funny, you know," he says.
"Speak for yourself, Admiral."
He rolls his eyes at that, and you know you've got him.
"Oh, so you do you know me?" he says, his voice a touch less bitter and instead weighted by his dry sarcasm.
When you don't answer, simply smiling pleasantly at him, he lets out another breath before folding his arms over his chest and leveling you with a stare.
"Just so I'm clear, you're using the constitution against me?"
"Yes."
"Your husband."
"Yeah, babe."
"The Third Amendment."
"Mhm."
"In our own home."
"Correct."
By now, he's somewhere between downright exasperated and fighting back a laugh, pinching the bridge of his nose and mumbling something to himself that sounds faintly like your name followed by a rare, reluctant term of endearment. Only then do you see that you do, in fact, have him exactly where you want himâjust as in love with you (and you're unending antics he's sure are destined to drive him insane) as he's always been.
After a minute of silent collection on his part, he fixes you with the kind of glare that's ruined careers and sent men scrambling. Though where enmity should be and so often is, his dark blue eyes are filled with a light sense of actual amusement.
He sighs then, rubbing his temples and voicing your name.
"Yes honey?" You smile.
"Open the damn door."
"No."
That nearly gets a curse from him, but he's too in control and far too much of a traditionalist to let himself curse in front of his wife, much less at her and over something so bewilderingly trivial.
After a short lap taken around the porch, he tries again. Now waging his verbal attack from a different angle.
"Over the course of just today, I have dealt with more overarching incompetence than I ever once signed up for," he says to you dryly, "and yet I'm standing here, having this conversation instead of sitting on my own damn couch and watching the Padres game, who by the way are-" He pauses, checking his phone for a beat, letting out a tense breath and rubbing his temples once more, before resuming his argument, "-Closing out the second inning."
"That sucks," you say with an unhideable smile.
"You have no idea."
For a long moment you both just stay there, him standing on the porch while you maintain your position in the window. Your expression is so peaceful it'd piss him off if he didn't find you so annoyingly beautiful. He instead settles for attempting to wear you down with a firm expression, his eyes steely and lips pressed into a thin, unimpressed line.
"Mrs. Simpson," He says finally, breaking the long silence, "may I request your permission to enter what is, again, my own home?"
"Well, since you asked so nicelyâŚ" You say with that same smile, withdrawing from the window and closing it.
He lets out a breath as you do just disappear back inside, a part of him genuinely expecting you to simply head upstairs and get in that bed he's spent his day longing for, instead of following through and allowing him entry.
A second later the door opens, you leaning agains the inside frame, and he can't help the way his eyes always soften just the smallest bit as his gaze lands on you.
"Is that a yes?" He asks finally.
With the nod you give him he steps forward, closing the distance between you and putting his hands on your hips with a sigh.
"Remind me again why I married you?" He says, voice entirely sarcastic.
"Because I'm pretty and willing to put up with you, with your total of three moods and one expression?" You joke back.
That earns another sigh, though this time it leans more towards a laugh and you don't miss the slightest of smirks ghosting over his features. "Something like that," he mumbles, leaning in to put a kiss to on top of your head.

Touch starved pilots of your choice cuddling their s/o headcanons
characters written: pete 'maverick' mitchell, nick 'goose' bradshaw, tom 'iceman' kazansky, ron 'slider' kerner, leonard 'wolfman' wolfe, rick 'hollywood' neven, beau 'cyclone' simpson, bradley 'rooster' bradshaw, jake 'hangman' seresin, natasha 'phoenix' trace, robert 'bob' floyd, javy 'coyote' machado, mickey 'fanboy' garcia, reuben 'payback' fitch
sfw, but cut for length. enjoy!
Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell:
depends on what age you're thinking!
if it's young!mav, he's probably just a liiiitle reluctant to let himself relax sometimes
he's sort of got his tough guy persona, and he's not used to dropping it, so when you get him alone he tries messing around at first
whether that's a few too many kisses, or a pinch to your side, he guards himself a bit before letting himself go
but when he does, oh, he's like a little kitten !
he lets you run your hands through his gelled hair (gross)
and it gets all misshapen and spiky
he probably just melts when you pet his hair like that, and he'll be snoozing on your chest in no time
now older!mav is definitely less of a tough nut to crack
he probably initiates the cuddling in the first place, he nudges you over to the bed and lays himself on top of you to crush you
you can push at his chest and splutter all you want, but he's made his choice on where he's going to lay, and it's on you
he likes holding you, but he wants to be face-to-face, so you can brush noses and bump foreheads
he probably tries sooo hard to stay awake so that he can soak in the time you're spending together but peepaw definitely crashes like 10 minutes in
Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw:
he also likes to be face to face!
buuut not for the same sweet reason as mav
he just wants to itch you with his mustache
he likes nipping at you too, he bites your nose to make you laugh
you won't be getting any sleep when you cuddle with goose, he just wants to talk and laugh and hold you the entire time
it's not a period of time to wind down, it's a big laugh-fest
and god FORBID you try to get up to pee
âNick, I have to go.â / âSorry, honey. I canât let go. I think my handâs stuck.â / âNICK!!â
Tom âIcemanâ Kazansky
heâs another one who probably has just a bit of trouble letting his guard down
heâll cuddle with you no doubt, but heâll probably always keep you in his lap or have some sort of upper hand in the embrace
it takes a while before heâs ready to be held himself
when he does finally give in it's so soft and sweet :')
he's had a really hard day and he comes home with his eyes drooping
you've planned a movie night but he doesn't even look like he could sit through an episode of a tv show
so you lead him to bed instead, and tell him you're sleepy, cause he won't 'ruin' the night by admitting that he is
you ask to play with his hair and he lets you, but he's not sure why 'cause you just said you were tired??
you basically have to trick him into being held but once his head is on your chest and your hands are in his hair he's gone.
he ends up mumbling something all sleepy and groggy like 'mm, that's nice' and his eyes are half shut and he's so endearingly tired :')
he wants you to do it all the time now, I'd say it's about 50/50 whether you fall asleep holding him or he falls asleep holding you
Ron 'Slider' Kerner:
slider's a big boy!!!!!!!
he's big and tall and muscly, the perfect cuddle buddy
he's probably more inclined to hold than be held
but he likes it when you face him so you can wrap your arms around his back :')
he probably likes it when he's able to bury his face in your neck/shoulder/against the top of your head
like he always wants his face snuggled in somewhere warm and nice smelling
and it just so happens his chest is an excellent place to get lost yourself
so you most of the time just nuzzle right into each other and get to snoozin'
i think he'd talk real soft, too, he'd murmur against your ear while you're drifting off, probably boring you to sleep with technical details of his flights but just before you crash for the night he slips in a little 'i love you, honey' and <33333
Leonard 'Wolfman' Wolfe:
he's a loser for his partner it has to be said
almost as teasing as nick is but not quite
he'll let you fall asleep he just wants to talk to you AllTheTime because he LovesYouSoMuch
he's a chatterbox and you'll be lucky if you get to sleep at a decent hour
he really likes it when you lay your head on his chest
'cause he likes playing with your hair and your face :]
sometimes he'll just use you as a little stress toy and squeeze your cheeks and pinch your nose and poke at your forehead
always making silly little jokes and telling you all about his day
down to, like, every comment one of his friends made...
'and then slider said he was gonna kill him but hollywood ran, so then they were just chasing each other around and iceman said-' / 'babe.. can we sleep? please?' / 'oh! right, sorry baby.'
Rick 'Hollywood' Neven
listen there's a reason he and wolfman get along so well
they're BOTH teases!!!
cuddling with hollywood is not really relaxing, because he's always pinching your sides or putting his nasty cold feet all over you, or pretending to knock you out by fake-punching you a bunch
you're just laying there and he's 'punching' your stomach, making fake punch sounds with his mouth, and if you push him away he'll pretend you've absolutely knocked him out, tumbling down onto the mattress with this dramatic thump and closing his eyes and sticking his tongue out of his mouth like he's a dead cartoon character đ
he's like a dog you have to get his energy out before trying to rest with him or he just Won't Rest
when you DO get him sleepy, though, he's kinda incoherent when he's tired, so you'll be cuddled up together, maybe you're scratching his back, maybe he's playing with your hair, and he's just sort of mumbling nonsense until he finally drifts off to sleep
Beau 'Cyclone' Simpson:
will not be held
sorry! not happening
he's just so big and beefy and authoritative that he doesn't much enjoy being coddled
he loves cuddling with you though, he gets very relaxed just laying with you
he's a casual toucher, i think, so you can rest your head on his shoulder at the airport, you can hold his hand at restaurants, whether that be over or under the table, he lets you hang all over him however you want
he's not super into in-your-face PDA, though, so you'll have to be polite and considerate about it
actually in bed though, under the blankets at night?
he's so much more cuddly than you'd expect
he wraps his big strong arms around you and tugs you close and lets you melt all over him <33
your favorite place to lay your head is probably his chest 'cause it's so broad and firm and nice <3
he's a good back rubber so cuddles are always soft and cozy and sleepy
Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw:
lord he's a cuddler
he's just a touchy guy, because he's probably gone without it for a significant amount of time so now that he's got you he's gonna enjoy it
big big big on pda, doesn't really care who sees
so that means cuddling in public, too
perfectly content to sit by the beach with you in his lap all cuddled back into his chest he doesn't care if anyone teases him
but back in bed he's a sucker for head scratches
if you have long-ish nails, enough to scratch at his scalp, he'll literally melt over you like an ice cream cone
his limbs go all gooey and he flops his head down on your chest, groaning and grunting while you scratch through his hair
he really enjoys sleeping on top of you, whether that be fully chest-to-chest 'you're suffocating me' cuddling or just an arm thrown over your stomach while he lays on his own
he likes being held, too, but probably prefers to hold unless he's having a hard day
Jake 'Hangman' Seresin:
big boy!! surprisingly fond of being held for everything we know about him
that cocky demeanor does not last under the sheets
he adores holding you, of course, he'll wrap his big arms around you and cradle your head to his chest
he probably plays with your hair, looooves it when you tangle your legs up with his own
he prefers if you talk to him rather than him talk to you if you're cuddling
cause he likes the sound of your voice and he loves hearing about your day
he tries to listen so attentively to what you're saying, but if you're taking a little too long telling him about that batty old customer that had visited the shop you work at today, his eyes are going to slowly start to droop and he's gonna let out a big ol yawn that means it's time for him to close his eyes
you always cut yourself off like 'sorry, jake. g'head, go to sleep'
and he insists you continue like 'nooo darlin' i wanna hear! keep going :]' except within two minutes he's dozing against the pillow while you talk about the old lady again
he's a simple man just talk soft and slow to him while snuggled up in his arms and he's gonna sleep no matter what you're telling him
Natasha 'Phoenix' Trace:
she really likes laying face-to-face with you!!
she's a fan of spooning, of course, she likes either burying her face in your back or letting you snuggle into hers
but she loves the intimacy that comes from being pretty much nose-to-nose with you
the type to lay there and chat with you mere inches away so that you're leaning in to kiss her all giggly and bashful every four seconds
she uses your cuddle time to tell you all about her teammates, what stupid shit jake said today, how bob almost tripped down the stairs, that fanboy's got a new girlfriend who wants to meet you, etc etc etc
but that means when you see them next you know all of the hot gossip about everyone and you giggle every time jake says something dumb and he's like WHAT.. WHAT IS IT.. WHAT DO YOU WANT WITH ME.. and you give nat this little ;) 'cause you'll definitely be talking shit about him later
she does this thing where she cradles the back of your head in her hand if you're face to face and she throws her leg over your waist and it gives you such intense butterflies that you need to close your eyes sometimes <3333
Robert 'Bob' Floyd:
cuddlebug <3
he loooves cuddling but if you do it face-to-face he's gonna need to be super close to you because he can't see without his glasses đ
i'm taking like nose-to-nose so close that you have to cross your eyes to see him
otherwise he's pretty chill in what positions he likes
you love it when he reads to you
i think he might not be the most confident reader out loud but he does it anyways 'cause it puts you to sleep
he gets really sleepy really easily so sometimes it's best to refrain from cuddling in public
like you're out on the beach by a firepit and you're all snuggled up together but oops he can't enjoy his smores because he's sleeping on your shoulder
he loves it when you lay your head on his shoulder sm :'))
he wraps his arm around you and tugs you closer <3
Javy 'Coyote' Machado:
prefers holding to being held
probably a little less talkative than the rest, but that doesn't mean you never chat
he just has this insane ability to fall asleep anywhere, i'm talking slumped against the bus window, leaning against the wall, sitting on the ground, piloting his aircraft sorry
he likes staring at you, though, while he falls asleep :')
if you're talking to him he'll listen and nod and hum along and agree when he should, he's a very good listener
but slowly he'll start to fade a bit, and he'll sling his hand over your waist, smush his face into the pillow, and keep listening for as long as he can
slooooowly you start getting less responses from him, he's not reacting as much, but his eyes are always locked onto your face and he's got this lazy little smile on his face while he drifts off to sleep 'cause he gets to look at you the whole time :')
loverboy!!
Mickey 'Fanboy' Garcia:
the most talkative in the whole wide world
cuddling with him is barely even cuddling, it's watching him act out his entire day
'and then payback went like this and- BAM! shot it down.'
and he's up on his knees in the middle of the bed with his arms out demonstrating exactly how they'd worked through their training exercises that day
and he is loud and energetic and you're half-asleep like 'that sounds awesome, babe.'
he isn't one to stay in one place really, he likes tossing and turning a bit before he falls asleep which means that you are also going to be tossed and turned
he's a really shifty sleeper too so you'll wake up with your face in his armpit
if you're really sleepy though, he'll settle down, he'll pull you into his chest and let you fall asleep there
but he'll probably be on his phone for a bit, he strikes me as a crazy night owl
Reuben 'Payback' Fitch:
out in two seconds
there is no conscious cuddling with him
why?
because the second his head hits the pillow he's snoring
you can cuddle up to him but if he's cuddling up to you he's doing it in his sleep
you're actually so jealous of him bc you lay down for the night and he tucks his chin over your head or he snuggles his face into your neck and that's it.
he's out.
he's a clingy sleeper, though, so if you wanna read for a bit or use your phone it might be kind of hard
honestly it really helps your sleep schedule to sleep with him 'cause sometimes he's entirely wrapped around you and you can't move
so there's nothing to do but sleep yourself
he's like a living furnace i KNOW that man runs hot
you probably wake up sweating a bunch if you're all snuggly with him
blanket stealer. he somehow manages to tear them off of the end of the bed where they're tucked in and cocoon himself
and then you wake up freezing cold
when i said he snores i mean it he snores loud
it's sort of comforting eventually? like at first it drives u insane
but over time you come to rely on it as white noise and you can't sleep unless he's all over you snoring right in your ear and drooling on your shoulder

Master List
There was one major rule in the Simpson household. Work ended at the door. The Navy was not allowed to step inside and into your relationship. If Beau needed to deal with the Navy on his personal time, he needed to go into his office.
But Beau was going to have to break that rule tonight.
Beau could hear the sounds of your daughters from down the hall as he walked into your house and felt some of the weight already melting off of his shoulders from his long day.
âDaddy!â Maggie, your eldest daughter, squealed, slipping down from her seat.
âHi, sweetheart.â
Beau bent down and scooped her up into his arms with a bright smile on his face. Setting her on his hip, Beau pressed a kiss to her cheek and fixed the bow in her hair.
âHow was your day at school?â Beau asked, walking slowly into the kitchen.
âI got a sticker for being a good line leader!â Maggie announced, causing Beau to smile proudly at her.
âVery good, sweetie. Weâre so proud of you.â
âMommy said that I could have ice cream,â Maggie stated, causing you to turn around from the sink.
âAfter you finish eating your vegetables, Mags.â
âThat sounds fair to me,â Beau replied, setting Maggie back down in her seat. âAnd Iâll throw in some sprinkles if you finish that broccoli.â
âPromise?â Maggie asked, holding up her pinky finger.
âPromise,â Beau agreed, wrapping his far larger pinky around her own.
Moving onto your younger daughter, Beau clucked his tongue with fake disapproval, causing Parker to grin and giggle up at her dad.
âMs. Parker, you have far too much tomato sauce on your face,â Beau stated, reaching over to grab a paper towel. Gently holding your daughterâs chin, Beau wiped the sauce off of your daughterâs face before planting a kiss on her chubby cheek. âWere you a good girl for Mommy?â
âYup!â Parker returned quickly, wearing a mischievous grin that Beau knew was going to give him heart attacks in the future.
âMostly,â you teased your youngest as you finished up with the dishes.
âSorry Iâm late,â Beau apologized to you, walking over to give you a quick peck in greeting.
âWell, after last night, I assumed that something big was going on,â you assured your husband, setting a plate into the dishwasher.
Beau had gotten a call right around bedtime last night and he didnât come to bed until the early morning. And you knew what that meant. Something big was going down. And as the Air Boss, your husband was going to be heavily involved. Beau glanced over at your daughters, who were still eating their dinner, before turning back to you.
âYou want to break the rule, donât you?â you guessed, turning to face your husband.
âAm I allowed to break the rule?â Beau asked, causing you to smirk a bit.
âPermission granted, Admiral. Proceed,â you replied, drying off your hands.
âWell, we needed to call in a specialist for this particular event,â Beau started off, folding his arms across his chest. âAnd we called in someone a little . . . familiar to you.â
You frowned for a bit, your eyes darting back and forth as you ran through the short list of Navy personnel that you were âfamiliarâ with when it suddenly clicked. Setting down the dish towel, you turned to your husband with an incredulous look.
âMaverick?â
âYes,â Beau confirmed, causing you to raise an eyebrow.
âI thought that he was taken off active-duty years ago,â you replied, causing Beau to nod.
âHe was, but Iceman disagreed, and called him in.â
âOh,â you mumbled, glancing over at the girls.
And how did you know Pete âMaverickâ Mitchell? Well, you had technically known him your entire life.
Your mother and Pete Mitchell had a brief tryst that resulted in your existence. But Maverick was never very much around in your life, though you only found out recently, due to your motherâs actions. But after she passed away, you started digging to find out more about your father and reached out to Maverick.
Your relationship with your dad was very slow going. He didnât even know that you were married to Beau. He knew that you were married with two little girls, but he didnât know the name of your husband. He never asked. And you didnât tell him.
âDid you want your whiskey then?â you joked quietly, spinning your wedding band around your finger.
âNot tonight,â Beau replied, straightening up. âWe have an early morning tomorrow.â He took a step forward and gently took your hand into his own, rubbing your skin with his thumb. âAnd youâre alright? With him being in town?â
âOf course, Iâm fine with that,â you returned, squeezing your husbandâs hand. âI was just surprised.â Reaching up to grab your husbandâs shoulders, you massaged his tense muscles. âAnd between the two of us, I think that youâre the one whoâs less alright with him being in town.â
âI just need him to follow my orders,â Beau sighed, shaking his head.
âOh,â you cooed, cupping your husbandâs cheeks with your hands, âyouâre definitely going to need some more whiskey. Iâll pick up some more tomorrow for you.â
Pressing a teasing kiss to his lips, you giggled when he pulled you in for more. And you were happy to return it, up until your daughter started screaming bloody murder.
âEW! Daddy! You have to put a dollar in the kissing jar!â Maggie yelled, pointing at the jar in the corner of the kitchen.
Similar to a swear jar, the kissing jar in your household was for when your daughters, mostly Maggie, thought that you and Beau were getting just a little too lovey dovey in front of them. The kissing jar money mostly went to ice cream or other desserts that you bought the girls, which only motivated them to call you and Beau out on it more.
âI will,â Beau promised, smiling over at Maggie. âRight after I give Mommy one last kiss.â
âThatâs two dollars!â Maggie demanded as Beau pressed another kiss to your lips.
~~~~~
It was a few days after the mission and you waited with your two girls and the other families for the newly formed Dagger Squad to return to Miramar. Beau had called you yesterday from Hawaii, where the planes stopped to refuel and rest, before heading on to Miramar today. And right on timeâwhich you expected nothing less from your husbandâyou spotted the planes in the distance.
Once they all landed and taxied off the runway and you were given the all clear from the grounds crew, you pointed your daughters in the direction of the plane that you knew Beau was on. Maggie took off running, already yelling for him, while Parker was happy to catch a ride from you.
âCome on, letâs go see Daddy,â you cooed to your youngest daughter before walking off.
âWhoâs that woman?â Hangman wondered aloud, watching you walk across the tarmac.
âOut of your league,â Phoenix replied, not even having to glance up.
âWho do you think sheâs here for?â
âProbably her spouse, judging by the toddler in her arms,â Bob added, sharing a look with his pilot.
âSheâs probably . . .â Rooster trailed off, blinking with surprise at your appearance. Because you looked oddly familiar to the woman that Maverick showed him a picture of in the infirmary. Maverick mentioned that the woman was his daughter and that they were slowly reconnecting, but that they werenât very close yet. âHoly shit. Who is she here for?â
âDid Hangmanâs bullshit transfer that quickly to you? You were in his backseat for a couple of hours,â Phoenix scoffed, causing Rooster to shake his head.
âNo, thatâs Maverickâs daughter.â
âMaverick has a daughter?â Hangman asked, turning around.
âYeah, one that heâs not really close with. So, who is she . . . you gotta be fucking kidding me.â
Maverick and Cyclone stepped off the plane side by side, chatting about what was to come in the next few days since Icemanâs replacement was not yet decided. But before Cyclone could get too wrapped up in the conversation, Warlock tapped Cyclone on the arm and gestured towards the hangar.
Cyclone turned and instantly smiled when he spotted Maggie running towards him, pumping her little arms to run as fast as she could. You trailed behind her with Parker on your hip, but you waved to him as soon as you locked eyes. Maverick followed Cycloneâs gaze, expecting the daughters that Cyclone mentioned very briefly in passing to be teenagers.
But when little six-year-old Maggie leapt into her dadâs waiting arms, Maverick was quietly surprised.
âYouâre back!â
âI am back, yes,â Cyclone agreed, hugging his daughter to his chest. âDid you miss me?â
âYeah, a lot! And Mommy was sad without you!â
âWell, she does like me just a little bit,â Cyclone joked, setting his daughter on his hip. âWere you a good girl for her?â
âLike I promised,â Maggie agreed, holding up her pinky finger. âParker threw up though.â
âWhen?â Cyclone asked, instantly concerned.
âMommy said that she ate too fast and then ran around too much,â Maggie replied, shrugging her shoulders. âIt was a few days ago.â
âDaddy!â Parker yelled, causing Beau to look away from Maggie.
You set down a wiggling Parker onto the ground, letting her run the last of the way to her dad. And then you turned to face your own, who was staring at you in shock. You shot him a sheepish smile.
âSurprise,â you breathed out, waving to Maverick, who waved dumbly back.
Cyclone, meanwhile, picked up Parker and held both of his girls. Pressing a kiss to both of their cheeks, Cyclone walked over to you. Turning away from Maverick, you smiled up at your husband and gently cupped his cheeks to pull him in for a soft kiss.
âYouâre finally home,â you sighed in relief, rubbing his cheeks with your thumb.
âWeâre all home. In one piece,â Cyclone reported, causing you to let out a breath.
Pulling your husband in for another kiss, you wrapped your arms around your little family for a moment. In the background, Hondo slowly waved his hand in front of Maverickâs eyes, shocked himself at the turn of events, but far more amused than Maverick was about it. Pulling away from your husband, you turned to greet your dad.
âHey, Mav,â you called softly, walking over to him. You gave him a quick hug and squeeze in greeting, all while waiting for his reaction to actually drop. âHow are you?â
âShocked,â Maverick replied, glancing between you and Cyclone. âYou . . . heâs your husband?â
âFor the past eight years,â Cyclone stated, adjusting his hold on your daughters.
âBut . . .â Maverick blinked rapidly, turning back to you. âI mean, isnât he a bit . . .â
âHe is still your superior officer,â Cyclone reminded Maverick, causing you to shoot him the same look that you always did when he got a bit snappy during Navy social events.
âYes, weâre aware that thereâs an age gap between us,â you assured your dad, turning back to Maverick.
âHow did the two you of you even meet?â
âWell, I had this ad up on a sugar baby website andââ
ââYou know that I donât like that joke,â Cyclone interjected, causing you to shoot him a playful smile while Maverickâs heart attack receded.
âWe met at a wedding actually. Mutual friends. We sat next to each other at the same table and spent most of the night talking. I managed to convince him to dance and then we got together about two weeks after that.â
âTen days,â Cyclone replied, pressing a kiss to Maggieâs head.
âAnd these are your daughters?â Maverick asked, looking over at your girls.
âYes, this is Maggie. Sheâs six. And thatâs Parker. Sheâs three,â you introduced, pointing out your daughters to Maverick.
âTheyâre beautiful,â Maverick commented, causing Cyclone to nod towards you.
âThey get it from her.â
Maverick nodded in return and you and Cyclone excused yourselves, walking off to greet Warlockâs family. He blinked dumbly, still in disbelief that the fact that his daughter was married to someone like Cyclone of all people. Cyclone? Really? The man was an outstanding aviator, but he was probably at least fifteen years older than you and a stick in the mud.
Hondoâs barely contained laughter caused Maverick to turn towards the warrant officer.
âWhat?â
âWell, isnât it ironic that for all the crap that they give you for running around with Penny, an admiralâs daughter, that your own daughter married an admiral? And Cyclone at that.â
âShut up, Hondo,â Maverick sighed, causing Hondo to burst out laughing and nudge him in the arm.
Beau âCycloneâ Simpson x Younger Reader SFW Headcannons
â˘You and Beau meet at a bar. Due to the nature of his job, Beau doesnât go out much but fortunately decides to hang out with his friends after work one day where he meets you.
â˘Despite the age difference, you and Beau actually have a lot of similar interests. You both love watching classic films from the 70s and 80s. You also both share a love of classic rock.
â˘Beau keeps you a secret at work. I think he gets insecure about his age sometimes and he doesnât want his colleagues to look down on him because of who he is dating.
â˘Beau is definitely the provider type. He loves taking care of you and just people in general.
â˘I think Beau is a really good listener. Whenever you have a hard day, you can rant to him for hours on end and heâll just listen.
â˘Beau loves leaving handwritten notes for you. Whenever he gets deployed, he always hides little letters around your home to let you know heâs thinking of you.
â˘Beau is NOT good when it comes to technology and itâs something you often make fun of him for.
â˘Once, he asks you for help lowering the brightness on your phone and you burst out into laughter.
â˘Beau values your presence in his life. He never thought at 50 heâd find someone so loving and caring.
â˘When you get a big promotion at your job, Beau is the first person congratulating you. He gets you flowers and champagne to celebrate.
â˘Beau, like Bradley and Jake, would drop anything for you. (Honestly I think all the aviators would.)
â˘Beau loves watching documentaries. It doesnât matter what the documentary is about. If thereâs one on tv, Beau is SAT. (He also still has cable FOR SURE.)
â˘Beau has really bad work life balance. One of your first arguments is about Beau spending too much time at work. You miss him when heâs gone but you also worry for his sanity. Being an admiral isnât an easy job. Itâs also not a job you should be doing 24/7.
â˘After that argument, Beau tries a lot harder to cut back at work where he can. Now that heâs in a relationship, he has to learn how to manage his work life and you.
