The Cuyler Adams, docked...at Buffalo maybe? Another interesting photo without description. The ship was built in Lorain, Ohio in 1904, its home port was Duluth. At one point it was named the Sahara. That’s all I could find out about the ship.
Cuyler Adams (1852-1932) himself is quite a different story. The Minnesota Historical Society lists a trove of documents relating to him and his Adams Mining Company. The story goes that he noticed the needle on his compass acting strangely and deduced that the iron content of the surrounding land was responsible. The innocent-looking land had no mineral outcroppings, but vast amounts of iron ore lay 100 feet under the surface. He formed the Orelands Mining Company in 1903 and named the mountain range (the Cuyuna) by combining “Cuy” from Cuyler with “Una” after his pet St. Bernard. The Cuyuna was the third most productive iron deposit in the Iron Range of Minnesota.
The pages below are from a 1922 issue of American magazine, a colorful account of Cuyler Adams and some of his legacy.
As for the photo of the ship at the top of this post, it’s another print that I bought at the Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo.
Let's try this again. More #riding #mountainbikes from last weekend's trip to #Cuyuna if you haven't been and you're from the upper Midwest, you owe it to yourself to get up there! The #singletrack is great, catering to all abilities. And they're building more! #singletrackmind #cycling #mtb #shredthered #realgirlsthatride #outsideisfree #outsideisbest #thisisminnesota (at Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails)
