Once in a while a commission comes across the bench that stops being a knife and starts behaving like a piece of jewelry. This curved khanjar was one of them — a private order, not for sale, shared here simply because a blade this heavily decorated is a rare thing to be asked for.The blade is stainless Damascus steel. Instead of a plain polish, the ornament was drawn out through artistic etching, so the pattern flows like scrollwork down the fuller.Then the slow part: more than 100 gemstones — amethyst, garnet, and green — hand-set into engraved gold across the grip and scabbard, each one placed to keep the color moving unbroken from pommel to tip.Craft, patience, and a little obsession. On most days that's a figure of speech. On this one, it was a hundred stones deep.
