Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
I've heard stuff about this book for years, and a couple of weeks back I finally got it. Lately I have been in the mood for fast paced thrillers and horrors, and since I also hadn't picked a thriller for the 2022 genre bingo I bought Gone Girl. I will admit at first I was intimidated by the length. As I have said in previous posts I tend to gravitate around shorter books, and this copy is 550 pages more or less. So I also faced my big book fear with this one.
I absolutely adored it. One of the best books of the year so far. I totally get why everyone was talking about it. The writing is spectacular. It's amazingly done. It is so addictive, I couldn't put the book down. I just needed to know what was going to happen next. Everytime I thought I had enough information to for opinions, someone said or did something that changed my ideas completly. It's really a great book. Do not go into it expecting nice lovable character. They are not, at all, you won't like them, but you will be absolutely invested in them and what is happening to them. It is one of the traits of the novel I appreciated the most. The author managed to create unlikable characters that still keep you glued to the pages, which is not easy at all.
Since this is a thriller I won't say too much about the plot, becase the less you know the more you will enjoy it. Since a movie was made a few years ago (I haven't watched it yet) you might know some plot things and some twists, do not fear because I knew a major plot twist and I still loved the book. Still I think the less you know the better. Anyway the plot concerns a marriage, between Amy and Nick. On their 5th anniversary Amy goes missing, and from then on you will read a chapter from the point of view of Nick, dealing with his wife missing. And a chapter from Amy's point of view, these are diary entries that date back to when she and Nick started dating. Pretty soon you find out that their marriage isn't as perfect as it seems, but I will not tell you more than that. The idea of having the story told from two different points of view (and time) was very well executed, and it does an amazing job at keeping you glued to the book. If you are looking for a thriller this is a great option to check out, I highly recommend it.
As I mentioned I have read this novel for the 2022 genre bingo, for the thriller prompt. I will post an update on the challenge once I have read at leas another book.
