Raffaella Curiel viene introdotta al mestiere nell'attività di famiglia, una sartoria milanese di proprietà della madre Gigliola (1919-1969, che divenne un centro di moda molto importante negli anni cinquanta e sessanta, e segue anche la scuola francese di Pierre Balmain. È attiva nel campo della moda dagli anni settanta Nel 1992 Curiel ha aperto uno showroom a New York e dal 1996 è presente anche in Giappone]. È affiancata nell'attività dalla figlia, anch'essa di nome Gigliola, dal 1993. Nei suoi lavori Curiel riprende grandi personaggi della letteratura e dell'arte, guadagnandosi il soprannome di "intellettuale della moda italiana.
