Built in the early 1800s, this structure was used as a charcoal blast furnace for smelting iron. The furnace is located at the base of Cumberland Mountain, next to Gap Creek near Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. The foundry and buildings were used for ammunition storage for a part of the Civil War. This foundry is considered one of the last examples of a cold-blast charcoal furnace. All the ingredients needed to make iron were nearby: iron-ore deposits close to the surface, limestone, abundant firewood to be made into charcoal for fuel, and waterpower to run the air bellows and a massive hammer mill. Everyday it took 625 bushels of charcoal, 6.25 tons of iron ore (I never get enough of this when playing Settler's!), and 1563 lbs of limestone to make 3 tons of iron. From the early 1820s to the 1880s, an iron smelting business here took advantage of the rushing waters of Gap Creek. Today only the creek and part of the original 30-foot-high stone tower remain, a small part of an industrial complex of buildings, slag heaps, and machinery then called the Newlee Iron Frunace. #cumberlandgap #cumberland #ironfurnace #tennessee #teampixel #kelwinadventures (at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqICFQzAg0E/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=3kvmxvn5zfn
We stood in three states at once by hiking up to Tri-State Peak in Cumberland Gap to stand at the tripoint of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. The Cumberland Gap is a narrow pass through the long ridge of the Cumberland Mountains, within the Appalachian Mountains, near the junction of the U.S. states of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee. Long used by Native Americans, the Cumberland Gap was brought to the attention of settlers in 1750 by Thomas Walker, a Virginia physician and explorer. The path was used by a team of frontiersmen led by Daniel Boone, making it accessible to pioneers who used it to journey into the west. Before we adopted @halflionhalfpup , his name in the shelter was Boone. To get to this peak, we hiked a part of the Daniel Boone Trail. π·: @kale_ylin #cumberlandgap #cumberland #kentucky #tennessee #virginia #kelwinadventures (at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp8hM3mF2KN/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=enqdj16setwz
