When looking for a picture for the banner of this post, I noticed a trend of these colorful flags and wondered what they were and why they were there, so I hope this may help anyone who has wondered the same thing! Also, keep in mind that prayer flags are also a part of Nepal, India, and Tibet, but my focus is on Bhutan for this post.

Bhutan's prayer flags are pieces of cloth with buddhist texts such as prayers, mantras, sacred symbols, and blessings. Rather than being used for worship, prayer flags are believed to spread positive energy, compassion, wisdom, and peace as the wind blows them, carrying the prayer across the landscape to all living beings rather than being exclusive to the person who hung it up. This practice reflects the central teaching of Buddhism: having compassion for others and the interconnectedness of all life.

The colors of the flags also carry their own meanings relating to the earth. Blue to represent the sky and space, white for air and wind, red for fire, green for water, and yellow for earth. These colors are commonly arranged in the same sequence.

A common type of prayer flags that you'll see is Lung Ta, which translates to "the wind horse." They're rectangular, and are strung between poles, trees, buildings, or mountain passes. They feature a horse that carries a wish-fulfilling jewel, and that horse is surrounded by prayers and mantras.

Khuru (ཁུ་རུ) is a dart sport that is traditional to Bhutan. In comparison to sports such as archery, khuru is much simpler and affordable as it only requires a pair of darts and a target.

Khuru is played on holidays or special events and is just as popular as archery is.
