Ruru hid a smirk as she saw Raha's face light when she asked him to come along. The boy was positively beaming and it was adorable. He reminded her so much of Taln in his eagerness and excitement for just about anything to do with adventure. What they were doing wasn't very exciting just a run of the mill culling of some beasts. Even still he was moving with an all but bounce in his step excited because he was on an adventure with the woman he idolized.
If Ruru was honest with her self his hero worship was uncomfortable at the least down right worrisome at the greatest of it. It had nearly gotten him killed and she had made her opinion of his attempt of self sacrifice well clear. He had taken it pretty hard but he had no idea the history she had concerning male Miqo'te dying for what they thought was a good cause.
Raha turned to her and said, "Looks like one of our quarry is directly ahead shall we…"
"Hold yer chocobos lad no sense in rushin up cause these ones don't move that quick lets take a moment an watch cause they also move in packs so just cause we see one don't mean its alone."
The Seeker nodded his tail lashing in agitation but he heeded her words which relieved the old Lalafell to no end. She wasn't going to have another young fool rush in. She shook her head dispelling the memories that were trying to shadow her mind and focused on the beast ahead. As was so often the case she had been right within moments of them observing two others joined the lone beast snapping and snarling at their packmate.
"You were right Ruru…hmm how do we go about this then." Raha murmured
"Ye've been working on yer spell work right?" Ruru asked
The Miqo'te nodded and he adjusted the staff in his hand looking at her expectantly. She nodded reaching for her Paladin soul stone and in a burst of aether she was armed and armored, "Well then I'll charge in at the one on the right ye put to sleep the other two and we'll do what we can te put it down fore that spell wears off. Or if ye still got that binding trick ye had as the Exarch use that."
He gave a rueful smirk, "That had been a bit of Allagan technology and sadly is currently sealed away within the tower."
"Right, so then use a sleep spell then aim some fiery blasts at the one I'm gonna be hitting just try not to singe me ye?"
Ruru then charged in as she felt the magic hit the other two creatures. The one she was aiming at met her with jaws snapping as she brought her shield up. It then howled in pain as a fire ball burst on its back and when it started to turn she bashed it in the face with her shield making it focus on her.
As the battle continued Ruru was relieved that Raha was so willing to listen to her. These things weren't difficult to deal with but they definitely used pack tactics to their advantage against what to their feeble minds was easy prey.
They had a bit of a surprise of a handful more joining the fray but again Raha listened exactly to her instructions and they handled them with minimal trouble. The worst injury received was Ruru had a pretty nasty bite to her shield arm. Which Raha began to heal as soon as the battle ended.
As he was healing her Ruru said softly, "Ye have no idea how grateful I am lad that ye actually listen. Not everybody I've worked with was so willing to so quickly."
"Did…did you lose someone because of that?" he asked tentatively clearly fearing he was overstepping boundaries.
Ruru gave a sigh and nodded, "Aye, he was a long time partner of mine both as an adventurer and personal. He was a lot like ye eager to do what needed doing wanting to help everyone he came across. We had been asked to deal with some bandits and even though he knew I preferred to observe before going he charged in and…."
"I am so sorry Ruru…can I ask what his name was?"
She gave him a reassuring smile, "Taln of the U tribe. We had met when we were very young on a Little Ladies Day. Poor lad had no one really cause o a sickness that struck the tribe and he was really shy and not one to easily speak with folk."
"Please tell me about him Ruru if it doesn't pain you too much to do so. I'd like to get to know him." Raha said softly
She gave him another smile and nodded, "It pains me a bit but he wouldn't want me to wallow in grief so ya I'll tell ye bout him,"
She then began to talk about Taln in detail something she hadn't done in some time doing her best to keep the smile that kept wanting to creep on her lips as he all but hung on her every word about a Miqo'te he'd never met but she was sure the pair would have been close friends had they ever gotten the opportunity.
"Hes got no one Ru we gotta do something," Taln stated looking at his partner with pleading eyes.
"I don't deny that Tal, but how do you expect us to take care o him if we're always on the road? What if we get into trouble? I'd rather not have a kid in the midst o some o the stuff we've dealt with." Ruru responded.
"I…well….I mean obviously I aient intending to take him on the road with us but we can't just leave him alone."
Ruru nodded looking down at the young Elezen who was sleeping between their chocobos. It was evident that even the stubborn birds had taking a liking to the kid.
Taln was right the boy, Almault had no one. His parents were victims in a recent attack on their village and the other villagers didn't have enough left from the attack to aid a young orphan. Which left the boy with no where to go and in the hands of a pair of too caring adventurers.
"Seven hells," Ruru hissed to herself, "I'll see if my sister can look after him. Aside from that I aient gotta clue what else to do."
"Really?" Taln asked his tail swishing in delight
She gave him a grin, "Aye, Im not about to abandon the kid. And my sis inherited the family business so he won't go without. Only thing strange for him is there aient many Duskwights in Ul'dah. But kids are kids and Im sure it won't be hard for him to find some friends."
"And we can of course visit him between adventures." Taln added beaming
Ruru laughed, "O course, one ye won't let me hear the end o it if we don't and I have a feeling that Pumpkin and Cinnamon there wouldn't either given how they've curled about him."
Taln nodded then said, "I'll make him some food for when he wakes then we can tell him what the plan is."
Ruru nodded and smiled as the Miqo'te then rushed to their packs and began gathering his cook pan and supplies. Ruru simply watched him amused realizing that they technically just adopted the boy. She then rummaged through her pack till she found a linkshell she had not thought to need to use at all.
She placed it in her ear and channeled the bit of aether to it hearing the triple chime of it activating. After a second set of chimes a voice came over it, "Well I hardly expected to hear from you Uma. Whats wrong?"
"I need yer help Une." Ruru responded, "Me and my partner U'taln have come across a young boy with no where to go. I can't take him with us cause o the dangers so I was wonderin."
"If he could stay with me. O course Uma ye know full well mom and da would never let me hear the end o it if I refused. Whats the boys name?"
"Almault, and fair warning hes been though a lot. There was a mess here in the Shroud and his folks had got caught in all o it and I'm pretty sure he saw far more than a lad his age should if ye get what I mean,"
"Poor kid, understood ye bring him by Amber Silk Tapestries and I'll get him settled,"
"Thanks Une I appreciate it, and o course we will not only send money to ye to support him but we will be by from time to time." Ruru responded
"So no chance o this new responsibility having ye two settle down is there?" Une asked an almost wistful tone in her voice
"We've been over this Une, I aein't made for business and dealing with customers. Do you remember the one and only time da had me in the shop." Ruru asked
Rurune giggled over the linkshell and responded, "Aye Silver Wolf still to this day gets a discount cause o how badly ye offended him. I get you its just…I miss having ye here."
Ruru gave a soft smile, "I know sis but look at it this way, Taln and the birds aient gonna let me avoid coming to visit the lad so this'll be a way ye get to see me more often."
Another giggle came over the shell and Une stated, "I'll hold you to that see you in?"
Ruru did the mental calculations, "Three days from where we are in the Shroud. That's o course if the weather don't get to soggy and slow the birds down."
"See you then sis," Rurune replied as the linkshell clicked indicating she had shut it off.
Ruru sighed and looked over at Taln who was carefully measuring out some spices for the rub on the dodo he was preparing for the boy. Looking over at the sleeping Elezen Ruru said softly, "Hope ye like spice lad cause thats what Taln prefers."
"Well old boy whaddya think?" Ruru asked as she led Pumpkin into the newly built stables that the Adventurer's guild decided to grant the Scions with their move to the Rising Stones in Revanant's Toll.
The old chocobo strode in looking around making small Kwehs as he appeared to inspect every inch of the new space before turning to her and giving a loud approving "Wark!"
She grinned at her old parnter and said, "Ya def more fancy than we had back home aient it."
He gave another couple o warks and kwehs that suspiciously sounded like grumbles and she chucked stating, "Oh don't be like that ye know I made it as comfortable as I could for you old boy."
The bird stamped his foot and still continued on his warking tirade and Ruru just watched amused as he also wandered through each stall deciding which one he was going to take for his own. The Lalafell simply followed after the chocobo letting him grumble.
"Yes, yes I know. it was comfy cozy then I dragged you back on the cold cruel road with all manner of unpleasantries that have barely been alleviated by some o the stables we've stayed at." She replied
He turned again toward her and stamped a foot again and gave an emphatic "Wark!"
Ruru just laughed and then looked him in the eye and said, "How in seven hells did ye think I felt with both Momodi and Papashan dragging me back eh? I was quite happy with our quiet life on the ranch with not much to do aside from chores and the occasional help o our neighbors."
She then gave a sigh, "But, thats how life is bud, ye should know this by now. Things change and we just gotta make the best o such,"
The bird chirped again and then leaned back giving her a gentle nuzzle and nip before trotting forward and beaking the lock of one of he stalls.
"This one huh, no surprise there right near the hearth outside so when it gets chill ye'll be nice and toasty. Okie lets get ye settled." She responded opening the door for him.
As he trotted in she grabbed some o the nearby bedding straw and helped him make a nice plump nest for himself. Then the old bird settled down in it giving a contented chirp causing Ruru to chuckle as she hung his tack on the pegs for it next to the stall and then rummaged through her packs till she found his blanket.
It was almost as old as the bird himself and had been lovingly patched many times by her own hands. She had woven it back when she had first started learning the craft and the feisty bird had snatched it and settled under it as soon as she had finished it. He had loved the thing so much she didn't have the heart to separate him from it and had taken pains all these years to repair it when it was damaged. As a result it was a patchwork of different patches depicting various vegetables that he loved.
As soon at it draped over him he gave a contented Kweh and snuggled down settling in for the evening. As Ruru turned she saw Alphinaud looking at her with questioning look. She cocked her head slightly and said, "Something on yer mind lad?"
"Do…does the Echo allow you to understand his calls?" He asked
Ruru gave a heartly laugh, "No no, I got no idea at all what those chirps actually mean technically. I just know the old bird from all our years o travel and get….call it impression o what he means when he starts the chattering. Alot o it is mostly reading his body language."
"Oh, I pray forgive me it was just almost like the two of you were actually conversing…"
Ruru nodded, "In a way we were. Look lad when ye travel as much as I have for as long as I have and yer only companion on the road for a chunk o it was the bird ye ride. Ye tend to well have to talk to someone."
"I see," he responded
She grinned, "Sorry to disappoint but it aient some mysterious, mystical god given power. Its just years o association and not worrying bout what someone might think o me talking to him."
He smiled, "I wasn't disappointed, more I was merely wondering if it was a yet known facet of the Echo since we do not fully understand all of its capabilities."
She nodded her grin widening, "Nope just an old adventurer babbling to her oldest friend on the road. Pay it no mind."
He simple nodded and watched her as she left the stable whistling to herself. The Echo allowing actual understanding that would be handy she thought to herself as her mind drifted back to the many times over the years the bird had tried to warn her of some danger or hazard and she hadn't known until it was too late to avoid it.
In the back of Ruru's mind she knew full well this was stupid that she shouldn't be doing it like this. But the Garlean bastard's complete dismissal of her allies combined with seeing Y'shtola prone coated in blood unmoving had made her blood boil. In an instant she had snatched her Red Mage soul stone from her pouch and her aether flared violently reflecting the rage she felt as she lunged forward recklessly striking with everything she had.
The fact that the crown prince seemed completely bored with her vicious onslaught only infuriated her further, causing her to completely lose her head in battle. Something that small part of her brain was screaming at her for it. This was a greenhorn mistake and she knew it but she ignored that little voice in favor of showing this asshole that they were a force to be reckoned with.
She continued striking and the prince finally seemed to have enough for he blasted her back with a burst of artificially created aether then lunged at her slashing down with his katana. As the red hot pain flashed through her breaking her reckless rage she swore he heard Tal's voice shouting "Ru No!" With that she tried to call up the Shield of Light to deflect the backstroke of the katana which she found her reflexes just slightly too slow to prevent the damage but just quick enough to deflect most of it.
Once the prince finished his strikes he started to sneer at her until his katana broke in half. He then straightened and turned and walked away the Skulls slinking off with him. Ruru knelt there panting as Raubahn rushed up and she saw him briefly look like he was going to draw on the crown prince but seeing her down severely wounded and several other wounded he stayed his hand and asked, "Are ye hurt lass?"
"Mostly my pride," she wheezed as the Serpent conjurer who had ran up with the general began to heal her. She reached into her pouch and grabbed her White Mage stone shifted to the class and waved the conjurer off saying, "I've got myself. See to her shes worse!"
With that she pointed to Y'shtola who now had both Alphinaud and Krile at her side with Krile healing her and Alphinaud taking care of Conrad. The conjurer looked torn for only a moment before nodding and rushing to aid Krile.
Ruru then focused and quickly closed her wounds before pushing herself up and running over too. Krile barely started to ask before she started pouring healing into the prone Miqo'te. She channeled the energies trying to focus on the woman she saw before her pushing the image of a different Miqo'te lying there from her mind.
This will be different, she will live. She has to live! she told herself silently as she and Krile together slowly closed the wounds to a point where Shtola could be safely moved. As everyone prepared to move out Ruru followed slowly mentally berating herself
That was so stupid. I know better than to just charge in like that! What the hell was I thinking.
Deep down she knew what happened. She hadn't been thinking, she just wanted to hurt the bastard for being so dismissive and hurting people overtly for the sake of it. It sickened her to her core that someone could be like that.
For her entire life she had strove to protect people to save them from the dangers of the world. When she fought a foe she tried to make the battle quick and concise. Desiring only to end the threat be it driving them off or if necessary killing them. The Lalafell was not a fan of killing unless absolutely necessary. Killing to hunt for food sure was definitely she didn't hesitate with. Killing to protect people from harm absolutely would do if necessary. But she never once wanted to kill just for the "fun" or "thrill" of it.
The fact that he thought to compare them, to claim they were the same infuriated her almost as much as his dismissal of everyone had. She trudged along after the group as they fell back to Castrum Oriens her entire body aching from her wounds but she didn't bother with any furthering healing on them. Nothing was life threatening and the pain was a good reminder not to be stupid as she had told many a green adventurer who had gotten hurt due to stupidity.
Several times the Serpent Conjurer Vounex tried to come up to further heal her, But she waved him off each time in favor for one of the Ala Mhigans from Rhalgar's Reach. She knew deep down he was simply doing his job but she felt his energies better spent on the others. She had healed herself enough to keep going.
We're gonna need to figure out what were going to do now. So many were felled in that fight and those that weren't are in no condition to fight. she thought to herself as they walked, We're gonna need allies….the Far East maybe? Im sure Doma is itching to throw of the imperial yoke and a fight on both fronts for the Garleans will force em to streatch their forces thin.
She made up her mind long before they reached the Castrum she would suggest if not insist that they take the fight to Doma. It would be a good way to weaken the Garlean's holds on both regions and gain them like minded allies.

Prompt: What’s the maximum amount of time your character can sit still with nothing to do?
"Stay here." Lady Margelot de Nevelle smiled with what she thought was the greatest kindness she could muster given the chaotic circumstances. She gestured toward a high-backed chair beside a closed set of double doors in a stark white marble-floored hallway in the west wing of the De Nevelle Manor. Yloise set her frayed bag on the ground beside the chair and sat down, folding her hands across a loaf-sized metal tin she carefully balanced on her lap. Distant shouts rang out beyond the hallway. Lady Margelot glanced back toward the sound, then turned back to Yloise. "I'll be right back." Her eyes radiated sympathy. Yloise caught her gaze for just a moment before fixing her eyes back on the box in her lap and nodded, forcing a wan smile. Satisfied by this exchange, Lady Margelot swept down the hallway, turning once to wave pleasantly before closing the far door behind her. Her footsteps faded and Yloise realized that this was the first time she had been alone since the tidal wave had struck the shores of Western La Noscea a few nights ago.
She breathed in and out again, slowly, stretching the moment out for as long as she could. Her lungs felt weaker than they had before. How long would she last underwater? The impact of the wave, if she survived it, would have probably knocked the air out of her anyway before she was dragged under with the current. Would she have tried to outrun it before it overtook her? Sitting in the chair, Yloise could feel her pulse quicken and her cheeks burned. Adrenaline rose from somewhere within her and she needed to be far away from even this place, a sturdy manor on the high cliffs of an island, sheltered in Galadion Bay from the open ocean. She swallowed and pushed down her fear, drowning her anxiety in a brief calming numbness.
Time passed. Clink. Clink-clink. Clink. Yloise’s absent-minded tinkering with the locked latch of the tin on her lap settled into a vague rhythm. Her eyes drifted from the hallway to the window across from her seat and to the sea beyond it. The grey sea reflected the grey sky beyond the dampened cliffs, giving the impression that they had merged into one great, grey void stretching out into a dull nothingness. Her mother was out there somewhere in that void, taken by the tidal wave along with the ruins of the Halfstone colony. Yloise’s eyebrows furrowed when she realized she was pondering whether her mother’s body could be found in the sea or the sky or if it would be found at all before something else swallowed it up. She straightened her back and tried to think about anything other than the ocean. The sound of waves or blood pounded in her ears as she dug her nails more forcefully into the latch. It did not budge.
She thought of her brother, Vallerin, half a continent away in the city of Gridania. He would have to be informed of their mother’s death. Yloise remembered Lady Margelot mentioning her eldest children, Irielle and Rolandaix, would be joining him in investigating the impacts of the Calamity on the ancient city of Gelmorra in the hinterlands beyond Gridania. Would she send word of the tidal wave to them before Yloise could reach Vallerin? Would she let them know – no, no, we’re safe. The wave didn’t reach the island. But do sit young Vallerin down before you tell him what happened. Yloise frowned. Regardless of who told him first, she would still have to write to him. But what could she say? All of Halfstone, gone in a moment, overtaken by a great wall of seawater churned up by Leviathan, the dread god of the Sahagin? The lavender fields, the fish-drying racks, the stacks of rocks they had left in the caves as children. Their beds and all the memories they hid beneath them. Their neighbors and friends, at least, had survived, aside from gruff old Aerghaemr, who had died a hero, occupying the Sahagin so the rest could escape – but Maman went back. A fool to the very end. Yloise grimaced as tears welled in her eyes. What could have been so important she had to go back before the alarm had even stopped ringing? What could not have waited?
Gone now, anyway.
Blinking away the tears, Yloise felt an unfamiliar wetness on her fingertips. Her eyes focused with some effort on her hands, finding blood where her finger had dug too deeply into the rough edges of the latch, still no closer to opening the damned thing. Resisting the urge to fling the tin against the darkening walls, she looked down one end of the hallway, then the other. No one. Had it been an hour? She looked out the window again to the grey void. Maybe... a few hours? She slumped against the high back of the chair and turned her attention back to the tin, holding it with one hand as she stuck the bleeding forefinger of her other hand into her mouth, gently sucking on her shallow wound as the coppery taste of blood sat on the tip of her tongue.
Yloise regarded the tin. A lidded metal box, no markings. A hinge on one side of the lid, a latch with a keyhole on the opposite. No key, of course. Was that what Maman went back for? Whatever was inside was lighter than the tin itself. When she shook the tin, something small and metallic pinged off the unlined walls inside, but, she noted with some curiosity, not against the bottom wall. Was that wall lined? Or was something soft inside this tin?
Yloise had seen this tin, or many others like it, stacked under her mother’s bed. One night, ages ago, Yloise and Vallerin scurried into the night with one of the tins while their mother slept. That tin wasn’t locked that night. Swinging open the lid revealed the tin held only a few scattered, tiny black seeds. Yloise, by virtue of being older and, therefore, smarter than Vallerin, declared that these were the lavender seeds her mother had been sowing. Vallerin conceded that Yloise was right, but did she consider that these were maybe magic seeds and that’s why Maman kept them under the bed? Yloise said that she had, of course, considered whether they were magical, but what is the use of magic seeds if they aren’t sown? Vallerin nodded sagely and closed the lid, satisfied at solving this small mystery before they snuck back into bed.
How long ago had that night been? And how long ago had Lady Margelot left her in this hallway? The growing dark obscured the doors at either end of the hallway. Yloise’s eyes tracked the stark white walls and cold white marble floors from north to south. Windows on the west side offered a view to the cliffs and the ocean beyond it. On the east side, a line of chairs, broken by a few doors, stood beneath a gallery of wood-framed paintings depicting the history of the storied De Nevelle family. Yloise craned her head to examine the painting behind her, a moody and evocative oil painting of the Galadion, shipwrecked upon Vylbrand, the stormy sea beyond its shores dark, roiling, foam-capped.Â
Yloise had not witnessed the tidal wave herself. That night was confused and hectic in her memory. She remembered her mother shaking her awake amidst shouting and smoke and, above it all, the ominous toll of the lighthouse’s foghorn. Yloise’s mother shoved a hastily packed bag into her arms as Yloise fumbled with her shoes, then they were running alongside their neighbors, wet blades of tall grass stinging at bare legs as they weaved through the fields towards the highlands of Skull Valley. At some point, the running stopped. Huddled in the cold, the villagers silently watched the light of fires on the hatched rooftops of Halfstone, mirrored in a dozen other villages dotted along the northwestern coast. Turning from this horror, Yloise watched her mother rifle through the bag she had brought with her with increasing alarm until Maman looked up and locked eyes with Yloise. “Stay here,” she ordered, firmly, but softly, as if Yloise was still a child that needed direction. Maman kissed Yloise’s forehead gently and tied a thin shawl around her shoulders as rain began to fall. “I’ll be right back.” It didn’t even occur to Yloise to protest before Maman disappeared into the night.
She had not returned by dawn. The fighting had stopped and the fires had died down but the foghorn ceaselessly continued to sound. Yloise had managed to fall asleep for an hour or so without realizing. She blinked awake through bleary, unfocused eyes, struck by the thought that the black sea looked differently somehow – wrong, even, but before she could consider what this meant, a sharp sudden pain pierced her skull. She’d had sudden headaches before, but never this painful and dizzying. She clambered to her feet and staggered toward the nearest person, but the pain pulsed again, stronger this time, and she collapsed into darkness. Images flashed in her mind of waves and flames, falling stars and burning villages. Her mother suspended in space, serene and smiling amidst the chaos. When she finally opened her eyes again, everything had changed.
The door at the far-end of the hallway clattered open, startling Yloise out of her reverie. It was dark now, and she could only see the light of a glass-shielded lantern bobbing toward her. As the light approached, she could make out a red-haired Miqo’te girl in an apron holding the lantern before her as she hurried through the hallway. The girl curtsied as Yloise stood up, looming above the Miqo’te in the dark. “Miss Yloise?” Yloise nodded and the girl smiled, setting down the lantern, and lighting the sconce beside the double doors. The aproned girl spoke nervously and with a punctuated rhythm, as if she were reciting. “Lady de Nevelle sends her sincerest apologies that she will not be able to dine with you tonight, but you are welcome to join the staff for supper or take it in your room if you want to be alone.” Yloise smiled politely and picked up her bag, stuffing the tin inside. “I think I’ve had enough of being alone for now.” The girl laughed lightly for reasons Yloise could not begin to fathom and gestured for Yloise to follow her back to the kitchens as their shadows danced on the walls and across the faces of ancient de Nevelles peering out from their portraits.
The Seeker leaves the known to discover and explore the unknown. This inner-rugged individual braves loneliness and isolation to seek out new paths. Often oppositional, this iconoclastic archetype helps us discover our uniqueness, our perspectives and our callings. Seekers are looking for something that will improve their life in some way, but in doing so they may not realize that they have a lot already inside of themselves. They embrace learning and are ambitious, and often tend to avoid the encumbrance of support from others. Needing to "do it themselves," they keep moving until they find their goal (and usually their true self too).
Shadow Side: The perfectionist. This will manifest itself in your life as the tendency to always strive to measure up to an impossible goal or to find the “right” solution. We see this shadow element in people whose main life activity is self-improvement: going from health club to health club, traveling the world, bouncing back and forth through self-improvement seminars and workshops, etc. If this sounds like you, you might wind up feeling as though you haven't really accomplished anything through a lack of commitment.
Life Goal: Search for a better way (better life)
Fear: Conformity, entrapment
Response to Problem: Leave it, escape it, take off
Life Task: Be true to a Higher Self
Personal Gifts: Autonomy, ambition, identity, expanded possibilities
Personal Pitfalls: Inability to commit, chronic disappointment, alienation and loneliness

This definitely seems to hit accurately on Kansui’s wanderlust, his need to see new places, and ultimately to look for himself in every new land he visits. Though while he does like to do things himself he will give it a couple of goes before he actively seeks help with things rather than shirk helpful hands. The whole perfectionist thing is accurate enough, even if Kansui doesn’t realize he’s measuring at all!
