Happy Two Years!

Two years ago today, I posted the original character sheets for the Chain as Cryptids au, and I could not be happier with the way things have unfolded. Two years later, and I’m still surprising myself with the story and pushing myself to make better drawings. This au continues to connect me with just about the most supportive community I’ve ever been in, and continues to introduce me to some of the kindest, most creative people I’ve ever met.

I’ll be opening up CAC art requests for a short time to celebrate, but please bear with me as I am a very stressed animation student, and things just got very busy!

Oh MAN okay so I’ve talked a lot about Wild here but MAN I have such a lack of Twilight lore. I wasn’t originally going to make any art for this, but I realized I have almost nothing for Twi. So here’s a sketch for his updated character design (will be colored and fixed up later)

I can definitely write some more information here!

• Twilight is ambidextrous, but he didn’t outright tell anyone that (he didn’t think he had to. Like. Why would anyone care?), except one day he cracked his left wrist while blocking an attack in a fight, then he immediately just swapped the sword over to his right hand and kept fighting. Everyone lost their minds. He felt so cool afterwards.

• He’s the KINDEST PERSON EVER. Like genuinely. He will always stop to befriend any animal they come across on the road. And he’s very excited to learn new shapes in foreign eras! The wooly rhinos in Wild’s mountains quickly become a favorite- oh and don’t even get him STARTED on remlits. He pets every cat, plays fetch with every dog (or wolf!), feeds every bird. And after hanging out with animals in his Hylian shape, he’ll change to match them and get to know them better. He’s precious.

• One might describe him as a gentle giant. We’ve already covered the ‘gentle’ part, but this guy??? Is second only to Time when it comes to sheer power. And that’s saying something! Time is a literal god! Twilight has the most muscle mass of any of the Cryptids, and he’s taller than most. It’s a good thing he likes everyone so much- you would not want to get into a fight with him. He’ll happily carry any one of the Cryptids of then go down in battle or simply need a break while travelling. He’ll shift into a bear to carry multiple! And he won’t even bat an eye!

• He is very incredibly protective. He views every single one of the Cryptids as family, and will get very defensive on their behalf, guarding them like he did the children of Ordon village. He means well, but his protectiveness can sometimes paint him in a negative light. Sometimes, he meddles in things that he shouldn’t, and he doesn’t know how to back down when he’s in the wrong. Like with Time and Sky, he will jump to conclusions and confront them each as a means of protecting the other. This ends up doing more harm than good, but his heart is in the right place.

• Big brother of all time. Big brother of all time.

• He is aroace. I know I’ve said differently before, but I thought about it a little more. I’ve always said that Twilight and Midna are simply the best of friends, and there’s not really much evidence to suggest he has any romantic feelings for Ilia. I strongly believe that he is just everyone’s best friend, and he has no interest in anything other than a platonic or familial bond. He’s so loving towards everyone in Ordon Village and everyone he meets in his travels, and he’s really bonded with the Cryptids. And he’s just like me, and we love him.

• His shape shifting abilities are always engaged. His Hylian shape is simply one of many- and it is not the ‘default.’ There is no default. He feels itchy and uncomfortable if he doesn’t shift for a long time, like his skin is a tightening prison that he has to break out of. He changes his shape every couple of hours. He even shifts in his sleep, his shape determined by his dreams. This is adorable, until it’s not.
