I have a question, and it's fitting for Mermay. In your AU are Mer generally colorful? The two canon Mer we know of are a gorgeous green and vibrant violet reminding me at least of tropical fish. Is that color saturation common or do some Mer have dark scales, or silver scales, do they have countershading?
PFFFF I kinda dropped the ball on Mermay, huh? May got. Really hard all of the sudden and Iām still not recovered.
ANYWAY. Yeah! Mer come in all different colors! Okay so Legend was originally supposed to be bright blue to match the mermaid suit in Oracle of Ages? But then I still wanted the color inverse with Ravio to make sense so I changed it to green- because Ravio is purple. This is why Legendās eyes are also purple now! Ravioās are green! They match! Thatās⦠pretty much the only deciding factor for how Legend and Ravio are colored. (Iām doing my best).
I wanted to really simplify how I draw Mer for this au. I know that I failed miserably in Mermay, but I draw Mer All The Time, and I always do designs based off of specific fish and it ends up looking really cool⦠but usually pretty complicated. For this au, Iām making comics. Which means I have to draw the same characters consistently and quickly. So I really simplified how Mer look here. Thereās a difference between Lorulean Mer and Hyrulean Mer- Ravioās fins are pointy while Legendās fan out. But other than that, every Merās structure is the same. The only differentiation between them is color.
Pods of Mer might look like rainbows in the water! Theyāre usually very brightly colored- so yes, this level of saturation is normal! Younger Mer might have darker scales to help blend in with the water, but they tend to swim close to the Surface where itās warm and sunny, and when the sun shines, the sea is very bright! They tend to be out in the open ocean, far from land, but they donāt swim very deep. Theyāre always traveling. Mer are so cool.
I don't know if you are answering questions right now, but I had a thought about Legend and Ravio. Being mer, did they have a hard time figuring out how to walk for the first time. I ask this because I cannot get the image of them flopping around like seals to move around for the first little bit before they get used to their new legs.
Yes! They really really sucked at walking when they first came onto land! But they were children back then so itās frowned upon to make fun of them. Ravio was five years old when he fled to the beaches- and the only guidance he had was Sheerow. Birds are bad at teaching children how to walk. Rav was all on his own, poor guy.
Legend was somewhat prepared? He knew the stakes of his banishment, but being told what to expect is a lot different than living it. They told him that the sun would burn him. They told him that heād have to breathe air. They told him that heād use legs- but they didnāt tell him how HARD that was gonna be! He was twelve when he was banished. So he had more time to know swimming, less time to know walking. Even now, he still trips over his feet. (If anyone makes fun of him for it, heāll push them over and laugh when they fall. āAw are you off balance?ā Either that or heāll just cuss at them in a language no one speaks).
Beautiful
For the wip ask game
This one is a comic that Iām working on! Where Legend is teaching Ravio Merspeak (because Ravio had to leave his pod when he was very young. He hasnāt spoken his native language since he was five years old, and heās VERY out of practice). Since Merspeak is almost entirely song, Ravio feels very self conscious of his singing voice, so Legends helps him.
Iām a sucker for Soft Legend. And Ravio in general.
I donāt have art that is good enough to share for this haha! But stay tuned!
I did a simple sketch of Ravio for day one! Iām still open to Mermay suggestions!

I donāt know if Iāll ever actually use this little secret code in my comics but I want you to know that it exists.
For the Cryptid au, Mer language is very much based in music. Songs. Legend has different melodies for all of the Links- songs that exist in their respective games- that function as their names to him. Ravio is called by his theme, Marin is called by the Ballad of the Windfish.
Legend has two names in his own language: one that was given to him by his Pod and one that was given to him by Ravio. The one given by his Pod is a deadname, heās not allowed to use it anymore since he was banished. Ravio calls him by the āFirst Searchā theme from Linkās Awakening, and thatās what he answers to now.
He also gave Ravio his second name, since poor Rav was too little to remember his first one.
Legend is unfairly good at singing. Poor Ravioās voice is all scratchy and hoarse- he hasnāt used his native language since he fled his home. He was five years old. Heās very out of practice. Legend gives him vocal lessons until heās able to hold a proper conversation in Merspeak.
⦠I love these two so much
Miscellaneous Cryptid au lore bits that are too short/too specific to make it into individual posts!
If you want more information about any of these, feel free to ask! Iām always willing to ramble about my Little Guys haha!
