L Stephenson store on South Main street, Crowland, on the night of June 13, and stealing a quantity of tires, tire tubes and other goods, Edward Zeilinsky of Crowland was yesterday, in city police court, sentenced to two years in Portsmouth penitentiary. Magistrate John Goodwin also sentenced Ben Borkoski, Deere, street, Crowland. to one year definite and an additional term of six months indeterminate at the Ontario reformatory at Guelph for this offence.

Page 01. ---- Crowland Man Knocks Unknown Attacker Unconscious, But Suffers Stab ---- Special to The Star Welland, Sept. 24. - Residents of Welland and Crowland to-day are mystified at a strange stabbing affair last night in the township. Luther Merritt of Crowland was returning from Welland and as he crossed a field a man rushed from the darkness, armed with a knife, and sprang at him.

A terrible struggle ensued and although Merritt beat his assailant into insensibility, the unknown man, presumed to be a foreigner, succeeded in plunging the knife into Merritt’s chest. Merritt struggled to his home with the knife lodged in his chest. A boarder pulled the knife out and summoned a doctor. It was found that the wound was an inch and a half deep but it is believed Merritt will recover.
