Waves was such a heavy movie but it really changed my perspective on some things.
!! mini spoilers !!
🌪️Plot; 9/10 This movie expressed the feeling of loss and process of healing so well. Its structure is made in a unique way because it gave us 2 perspectives of the one dealing with difficult and emotional moments we go through in life when we don’t handle it well. Really portraying the grief and hardship Tyler went through with high standards and expectations from his dad and pressure from relationships. Both sides were conveyed so differently yet it was both so powerful and meaningful.
🪐Characters; 8/10 The characters in this movie feel so authentic in a way. With their flaws and human experiences. With struggles some people can relate to. Tyler’s family and their relationship within each other is shown in a way of no right or wrong. No clear villain or hero, but people who make mistakes and face the consequences. Trying to find a way forward. It was really nice to see how Tyler’s sister (Emily) was turned to her whole take on the situation and how she handled the whole thing. It was definitely a different vibe from Tyler’s but that’s what made it so special. I loved how Tyler and Alexis’s relationship was so different from Emily and Luke’s relationship. I feel like Tyler’s relationship showed a lot of unresolved stress. Tyler let his other problems interfere with his relationship issues therefore effecting his decisions. Emily’s was a mature and emotionally intelligent relationship. She really did build her connection with Luke through trust, honesty and understanding. Healing from the trauma and experiences that Luke and Emily share together and supporting each other through hard times.
🍷Acting; 9/10 The cast works so well together because they did so good in creating a realistic family dynamic. Their performance made a huge impact on how it made me feel throughout the movie and it helped me understand the struggles, growth and relationships. It just felt so real. The scenes with Tyler and his strong emotions when he was crashing out in his room, the bathroom scene broke my heart though it was nice to see Emily comforting and reassuring Tyler.
📀Cinematography; 10/10 The colours, scenes, angles, lighting. Everything was a piece of cake. No words needed.
