Overview
The Besmirch Triad, led by the 43rd King of Besmirch, is a massive criminal organisation based in Arizona, mainly operating in Pima County. They control these towns for financial gain and use their seemingly peaceful fronts to hide their illegal operations. They consist of terrorists, corrupt law enforcement and politicians, border smugglers, drug dealers, hired mercenaries, the Denomination of Organic Monotheism, Ecotologists, and other petty and big-time criminals. They have strong criminal ties to Hasselridge and Muhosransk City, but these locations aren't recognized as official members of the larger organisation.
History
Little information is known about the historic rise of the Besmirch Triad due to insufficient documentation and the members' overzealous dedication to keeping the organisation's origins an absolute secret. From what law enforcement and governments were able to gather, they started sometime after a couple of years following Hasselridge's construction in the 1920s during the Prohibition era. Hasselridge was a very poor city with an extreme lack of effective law enforcement, and the Arizona government failed to provide it with appropriate funds for better living conditions and other essentials for city growth and citizens' well-being. This situation made the city an ideal location for small Mafia families, a prominent Irish gang led by the McPherson Brothers, and a Jewish criminal organisation to take advantage of for undercover illegal operations, such as alcohol smuggling. Surprisingly, instead of being greedy with the money and only focusing on their official criminal members, these organisations residing in Hasselridge used some of the funds they received to alleviate the financial troubles and improve the lives of the citizens, even going so far as to offer them jobs, albeit risky ones.
In the early 1940s, as Hispanic and Black gangs began to form in Hasselridge due to racial segregation, a conflict emerged between them and established criminal organisations. The ensuing bloodshed and betrayal prompted the Arizona government to intervene, leading to a swift strengthening of law enforcement in Hasselridge. This enhanced police presence significantly weakened the operations of the criminal organisations. Under increasing pressure, the rival factions set aside their differences and reached a peace agreement. The surviving major criminals agreed to vacate the gangs' territory in Hasselridge, acknowledging it as their own, and they both pledged to support one another when necessary. The Irish gang and their allies departed Hasselridge to claim new territory, successfully taking control of the towns of Paradise, founded in the 1880s, Catharsis, established in the 1890s, and Edensin, which dates back to the 1780s.
Territory and Influence
Although the Besmirch Triad isn't fully well-known and their true operations are somewhat secretive, their influence over each piece of territory varies and has been documented by the governments of Arizona and Russia. They essentially own all of Arizona, but their influence is strongest in Pima County, where they originated and most of their largest operations are located. They have the weakest sway over Hasselridge and Muhosransk City due to both areas lacking official membership and the latter being outside of Arizona. It has been noted that they have a strong presence throughout the Western and Central United States as well as a noticeable impact in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq, all due to stable connections with terrorist organisations and the American and Arab underworld.
In Paradise, the community appears docile, but many of the residents are exceptionally rude, incompetent, uncaring, violent, perverted, obnoxious, and/or psychopathic. They engage in various acts of active harassment, such as shouting obscenities and falsely accusing people of crimes, which alerts nearby police who apprehend the accused with no questions asked. The local police force, along with the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives), SWAT units, and National Guard, are corrupt, but they're nowhere near as terrible as those in Catharsis, making an effort to keep the peace. It's plagued by numerous crimes, including bank robberies, terrorist attacks, book burnings, murder, cannibalism, the illegal use of elephants to produce items like basketballs, and the exploitation of people and dogs to process meat sold at Meat World, Cock Asian or on the black market. Pan-Islamic terrorists, biker gangs labeled as "bandits" by residents, white supremacists, serial killers, mass shooters, and smugglers of ostriches and elephants are prevalent.
There's a group known as the Survivalists that serves as law enforcement for the criminal underworld and owns a napalm factory, overseeing illegal bioengineering and the trafficking of WMDs, lethal chemicals, and firearms. A group of rednecks affiliated with the Besmirch Triad is responsible for a range of criminal activities, including serial rapes, selling moonshine and counterfeit chemicals on the black market, kidnapping people for sex trafficking, and animal abuse. Adjacent to a house owned by a couple of ATF agents is the Emporium of the Local Health Pipe Distributor, which sells crack cocaine pipes that have been legalised for pharmaceutical purposes, effectively circumventing potential law enforcement intervention. The Denomination of Organic Monotheism primarily operates in the Trainyard Area and resides in an enclosure known as the Church of the Compound, which is also Uncle Dave's residence. However, some members of the cult have relocated to Hasselridge and Catharsis following the battle against the ATF.
In Catharsis, located near the border of Mexico, life is tough as the stagnant twin city of Paradise struggles to recover from the Global Economic Meltdown, further exacerbated by rampant corruption and illegal activities. There's a mentally deranged left-wing extremist group known as the Ecotologists, often referred to as "eco-zealots" by the Denomination of Organic Monotheism and Erectus Sectarians. This cult operates in the town alongside a corrupt and hypocritical right-wing government led by a sleazy, perverted mayor. His advisor, Richie, is secretly working for Uncle Dave's cult, aiming to generate funds to keep them off the IRS's radar. A Segway dealership owned by the Ecotologists in town operates as a money laundering scheme, generating additional funds by selling animals they frequently steal from Evoluscious Cosmetics to Mexico and various Asian countries for use as food. Local criminals are involved in trafficking illicit goods, including Viagra pills from La Farmacia and radioactive chemicals, armed robbery, child exploitation, illegal pornography, the Malaysian sex trade, and prostitution.
There's a small prevalence of biker gangs that work for the mayor as law enforcers when the police force fails to fulfill its duties. However, the majority of these bikers are nomadic rebels with no ties to the town government and/or Besmirch Triad. Various criminals have infiltrated Arizona's witness protection program with the help of corrupt police officers and federal agents, allowing them to protect their leaders from government intervention. Additionally, an Irish-Mediterranean soup kitchen franchise, owned by pan-Islamic terrorists and Christian white supremacist hate groups, provides them with financial support and supplies weapons to the criminal groups they associate with.
In Edensin, located along the Mexican border, Los Oscuros works for the Besmirch Triad and Syndicate, a local Mafia run by Vince Desi, who's also the CEO and founder of Running With Scissors. Los Oscuros operates either in the town or in the shadows on the other side, engaging in activities such as human smuggling, drug trafficking, kidnapping, and holding people for ransom. They also coerce innocents to do their dirty work, threatening them with execution if they refuse and withholding any potential reward they may desire or need. The biggest job agency in town, Bellow Job Agency, is involved in shady business deals and has been known to torture failed job candidates. Additionally, mountain men are involved in a large human and pet organ trafficking ring, and the local animal catcher business is involved in dog and cat meat processing by catching strays, butchering them, and selling them on the black market. Furthermore, there's a large drug lab located beneath Happy's Pet Stash, an art gallery that operates as a black market for stolen artworks, and a casino district run by the Syndicate that's actually a massive money laundering scheme. The residents are often compared to those who live in Paradise, but they're nowhere near as boorish as those individuals.
Hasselridge is plagued by criminal activity, which significantly worsened after the major zombie outbreak caused by Lorie in an attempt to summon The Devil, who was destined to bring eternal damnation to the world. This disaster devastated the city and required substantial financial resources for repairs, but some areas, particularly the Suburbs, Mall, and Downtown, remain in poor condition. Interestingly, the Hasselridge police aren't as corrupt as those operating in Paradise and Catharsis; they're dispatched to stop incredibly dangerous individuals and perform their duties effectively. This a major reason why the Besmirch Triad refuses to accept Hasselridge as an official member, fearing that the law enforcement force could contribute to their downfall.
A significant portion of the population is notably sadistic and violent compared to that of Paradise. While Hispanic and Black gangs are prevalent, they're generally tamer than other criminals and the staff at Happy Hill Asylum who regularly commit cruel and grotesque acts of murder, including dismemberment, beheading, skinning, and crucifixion. The more organised criminals and asylum staff are involved in the Besmirch Triad's operations, engaging in a variety of activities such as selling organs on the black market, smuggling people to other states, and trafficking stolen items.
Muhosransk City has a corrupt and indifferent law enforcement system that's particularly prevalent in the village compared to other areas connected to the Besmirch Triad. They're organised to be more militant and can be brutal at times, often knocking out innocent people before apprehending them and shooting citizens on sight for violating certain rules, such as breaking into a prison, rarely giving them a chance to explain their actions. They also arrest random citizens, subjecting them to questionable suspect identification procedures to meet specific quotas, such as busting porn pirates. Additionally, there's a large organ and limb trafficking ring involving an underground surgical syndicate that sells these body parts to terrorist groups, cults, and wealthy individuals for various purposes, often for billions of dollars. Local porn businesses are engaged in human sex trafficking and dealing illegal pornography on the black market. There's also a plastic surgery agency believed to be connected to the underground surgical syndicate; however, no evidence of their involvement has been made public. Mitya is the leader of all the gangs operating in the village that form the Muhosranskaya Bratva, ensuring that criminal operations run smoothly and effectively collaborate with the Besmirch Triad.
The Erectus Sectarians operate in the Kumarniki area, where they're involved in numerous sex crimes and cannibalism, and are known for their active phallic worship. In the outback village, there's a local politician and leader of the Agrarian Republican Social Education (ARSE) party, Fyodor Ivanovitch Zhirnomord, who's a major supporter and financial sponsor of the Erectus Sectarians and Besmirch Triad. The ARSE party is involved in organ trading, selling materials they deem compromising on the black market for exorbitant prices, and suppressing the violent efforts of the Bastardz through stealthy assassinations and the kidnapping of members to sell to criminal organisations that require workers for hard labour and prostitution. They're also involved in other illegal activities, such as drug dealing, primarily within territory acquired by Fyodor with the aid and permission of the Besmirch Triad, located outside of Russia and within Arizona. There's a local gang of drug dealers that has allied itself with the Besmirch Triad due to their proficiency in smuggling goods through covert methods, such as hiding drugs inside large animals. They make substantial profits with heroin being the most popular item they smuggle.
Although the Bastardz present themselves as a countercultural, nonconformist group opposed to mass culture, promiscuous sex, alcohol consumption, and marijuana use, they're actually involved in the distribution and sale of child pornography and illegally produced sexual posters and tapes, white supremacist activities, unlawful hacking, and homophobia. Public indecency, unwanted sex change surgeries, attacks on communal places and sex businesses by self-righteous terrorists, and district attorneys involved in secretive homosexual relationships for blackmail or sexual assault against local sex workers are among the other criminal activities known to be prevalent. It's unclear why the village isn't an official member of the Besmirch Triad, but it's commonly believed that its location in Russia, away from nearby regions, contributes to a lack of fully stable and reliable relations.
Extra Information
It's believed that the Holy Water of Lazarus was either stolen by the Denomination of Organic Monotheism, which they're hiding it somewhere in the Medicinal Herb Farm for some mysterious doomsday-related purpose, or handed over to the current Kingpin of the Besmirch by corrupt police officers as a gift of appreciation and servitude. This cursed water was supposedly later used by the Survivalists to bioengineer a zombie plague, incorporating genetic material from bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). This plague would be unleashed on Paradise, resulting in rabid dogs, diseased cows, and zombified humans. However, this is purely speculation as what remained of the Holy Water of Lazarus mysteriously vanished after the defeat of The Devil.
There's a rumour circulating that the Besmirch Triad came into contact with grey aliens, forming an alliance with the promise that if their operations miraculously fail in Edensin, they're free to induce the apocalypse in that town, doing whatever they see fit. However, every criminal in and around Edensin is very hush-hush about it, dismissing the claims and avoiding any discussion.
Old Paradise was once under their control, serving as a peaceful front for their more clandestine activities, such as trafficking military technology and mining fossil fuels to sell on the black market at exorbitantly high prices. However, they swiftly abandoned Old Paradise after the Sudden Paradise Massacre of 1997, which made it clear that regaining any business there was impossible, even though they were willing to risk the lives of a few associates to stop the mass murderer. Although the Besmirch Triad has never attempted to reclaim the territory lost during the Sudden Paradise Massacre of 1997, they've allowed Running With Scissors to draw inspiration from Old Paradise for their animated projects. This decision is driven by a disturbing curiosity to see them create something based on the tragedy as well as a sickening desire for revenge to make the mass murderer regret ever ruining their operations.

Start unlearning your automatic reactions to people being called ‘criminals’. Start thinking about why you trust these authority figures in who they choose to punish, who they’re able to punish, who they most often punish with the brand of ‘criminality’. Is it really the people causing the most harm? I’d argue no. I’d argue it’s the people that they want to oppress the most while they cause the most harm - ‘they’ being the super-rich people who own the prisons, who own the military industrial complex, who own all of the housing stock because they had giant hedge-funds buy it up and drive up the housing prices and use a national price-fixing website —multiple national price-fixing websites— to up the rents on rental units.
They’re setting it up to kill and enslave as many people as they can. Don’t give them the tools or support to do it. Examine your beliefs.”
