Vasili Mitrokhin: The KGB Archivist Who Buried Their Secrets Under His Floorboards
For 12 years, KGB archivist Vasili Mitrokhin secretly copied thousands of classified documents โ then buried them under his family's floorboards. When he finally defected to the British Embassy in Riga, 1992, he brought the largest intelligence cache of the entire Cold War with him.
The Mitrokhin Archive revealed KGB operations spanning four decades: penetration of Western intelligence services, disinformation campaigns targeting NATO governments, illegal arms caches buried across Europe, and the true scale of Soviet surveillance โ including the GRU officer who tipped off the KGB about Oleg Gordievsky.
