One night, the two of you lay entangled on the swing. Remmick pushed you back and forth gently with one foot as you dozed on his shoulder. His hand stroked your hair softly while he hummed nameless tunes. You could feel the vibrations coming from him like the purring of a cat. Seeking out more, you let your head slip down to rest directly on his chest. The sensation was stronger now, but there was something else you noticed. ‘Remmick?’ ‘Mhm?’ ‘You don’t have a heartbeat?’ Remmick sighed. ‘Nope. Not right now, at least.’ You sat up straighter with a questioning look. ‘When I’ve eaten, it’ll beat then. But not for long.’ ‘Strange.’ ‘I’m dead, sweetheart.’ He shrugged. Slow and hesitant, you pressed a hand to his chest, feeling for the absence. It was unusual, yes. But something about it made him even more solid under your touch. A statue carved from marble. ‘Is it a problem for you?’ ‘If no heartbeat was where I drew the line…’ You yawned and nuzzled back into his embrace. ‘Well, that would be very odd.’
