Went to my first hockey game since before the lockout tonight, a preseason matchup between the Washington Capitals and the Nashville Predators. I was not impressed by either team's performance. Nashville was hurting from the lack of Pekka Rinne in net (Hutton allowed 4 goals, including a soft one by the OvenChicken) and Shea Weber out front.

The most embarrassing moment was a Predators power play where they were only in the offensive zone for 7 seconds. It was just long enough to set up the formation, and make one ill-advised pass across the middle that the Caps cut off and turned into a breakaway. Despite having the man advantage, they were unable to reenter the zone for the next minute until they committed their own infraction and we had 33 seconds of 4 on 4.

For the Caps, I saw an excellent one timer by Backstrom from the left circle and a textbook power play goal setup and score (that Ovie goal I mentioned before). Otherwise, they continue to play the system of get the puck, pass it to Ovie. He has to be the most ineffective Captain in the league. I constantly see him just nonchalantly skating along, just waiting for the puck to come his way. He doesn't play defense, he doesn't poke check the puck away. He waits for the pass then goes for the breakaway. No wonder he always leads the league in shots.

This is going around Twitter. No idea who made it, but they deserve an interweb medal in the shape of a mother's basement. Well done. Wellllll done. The Rangers beat the Caps last night, 4-3. This ...
