"My wife told me that I needed a project to stay busy, and I think she meant for me to paint the bathroom or fix the railings on the back po
Pretty cool pictur eof the Shay locomotive crankshaft and the geared drive splines — these were considered "geared locomotives" indeed!
I wish them well on their restoration👍 ... common pitfall is to try and simplify the drive line, which then results in binding and a locomotive that doesn't run (as has happened with many attempted Shay locomotive restorations)
They call it a crankshaft because damn is that crank shafting. they call it a crankshaft because *looks at google search results* They call it a crankshaft because it cranks the shaft around?

“He was the most optimistic person I have ever known. He just thought things were gonna work out. And he didn’t have a particularly easy life… he just had this incredible optimism. In fact, as an older man I took him I took him to visit some of his World War II friends, Charlie Cruikshank, “Crankshaft” … and there was another guy, Danny, one of his World War II friends … and I asked that guy was he always this positive? Was he always this optimistic? Even way back during the war? And Danny said ‘Yeah, it used to drive us crazy’.”
