Sunrise Over the Sierra/Forty-Mile Desert
These four images were taken on my flight back from Sacramento: the first of which was taken at SMF while sunrise first broke over the Sierra.
The second and third images show us the Forty-Mile Desert in western Nevada. This is the dry stretch between the Truckee and the Humboldt rivers. The Central Pacific Railroad had to traverse this area in 1867. In the second of these two shots one can see where Highway 95 moves south of Interstate 80 at the east end of the desert.
The fourth and final image is of Toulon Lake and the so-called “sink” of the Humboldt. The river begins near Wells, in the eastern part of the state, and peters out in this basin. This area can be found by looking up the Humboldt State Wildlife Management Area, not terribly far from Lovelock.
Four images by Richard Koenig; taken September 23rd 2018.
