FYI to Verizon Customers regarding CPNI…
An alert was recently sent to Verizon customers regarding Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI), with a request to share your information among affiliates, agents and parent companies (including Vodaphone) and their subsidiaries.
What if this notice ended up in your spam folder? Verizon indicates that you only have 45 days from the date of the notice to opt out or they will automatically assume that you have given them the rights to share your CPNI with everyone listed above.
Verizon:
This information allows us to better serve you by identifying, offering and providing the most appropriate communications products and services to fit your needs.
The FCC requires Verizon to protect your CPNI. If you do not opt out of CPNI:
As you wireless provider, Verizon Wireless may have certain information about you that is made available to us solely by virtue of our relationship with you, such as details regarding the telecommunications services you purchase, as well as the type, destination, technical configuration, location and amount of use of such services. This information and related billing details are known as CPNI. [Source]
Translation:
Bottom line is that Verizon is using opt-in as the default setting.
Solution:
Q7. How can I opt out of CPNI sharing?
A. 1. Register for My Verizon, sign in and click the “Account” tab located on the top navigation bar. Select “Account Profile” and scroll to the “Alerts and Preferences” section, then click on “Manage Privacy settings” in the “Privacy Settings” section. You can also call 1–800–333–9956 and follow the recorded directions. Finally, you can also call 1–800–922–0204 from 6am to 11pm to reach a Customer Service Representative who can process your request for you. [Source]
If you are a Verizon customer - do you plan to opt out or will you maintain default settings?
Update: 10/12/11 Verizon changes privacy policy and it is not for your benefit...
