ever since receiving promotion to lieutenancy, rukia has developed a special sense of duty towards her captain; while he wasn't the strongest or 'coolest' among his peers, yet there was a unique strength that touched her heart & made him the truly best in her eyes. it takes one REAL POWER to defy one's ailment for the sake of helping others, rise to the top despite all odds & still remain serene & respectful, even with a blade aimed at an enemy — when she learned the details of what he did at the battle of fake karakura from kiyone, she remembered THAT ONE DAY, the way he threw himself at metastacia & felt the same dread. a man so noble, so gentle at heart had no business wasting himself away.
hence rukia saw herself as the lieutenant ( as a successor to late kaien ) in the obligation to give all of herself into making sure her captain isn't bothered beyond what is absolutely necessary. it was a service of respect, of admiration, of warmest sense of duty.
even in this peaceful time, when there was nothing to be really done ( she diligently managed all of personnel & tasks for her superior ) rukia made sure to be available for assistance wherever needed, like the koi pond at the captain's quarters. so she was readily there when an oh so typical request came.
she could hear it too, the bickering her subordinates / partners had going on ( most probably another of their 'who likes captain ukitake more' shenanigans ). they mean it well, never aiming to hurt those around, but was there a true necessity to let all of soul society know what... what was that word again? 'simps'? ...they were?
with nimble moves, she crossed the distance towards the exit, but halted just for a second.
