Synopsis: In the near future, a weary Logan (Hugh Jackman) cares for an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart),at a remote outpost on the Mexican border. His attempt to hide from the outside world gets upended when X introduces him to young mutant name Laura (Dafne Keen).Logan must now protect the girl and battle the dark forces that want to capture her.
For decades now, we have been clamoring for a Wolverine film done correctly, from his first incarnation in Hulk #181,to his own mini-series in comic book form, in the 1980′s by Frank Miller. Than to the amazing Saturday morning cartoons and his first appearance in a feature film in 2000 with the ‘X-Men'. Hugh Jackman has played this iconic character known as Wolverine,that fans took a liking to him immediately. Besides the ‘X-Men’ films, Wolverine also received his own set of stand alone films, which may or may not have been liked by people for various reasons.
The Wolverine character is brutal, violent and this Logan film was given an R-rating just for that reason. It is complete with blood,ultra-violence,nudity and vulgar language. It's everything we wanted in a Wolverine movie...FINALLY!
The past three X-Men films, we have seen our favorite X-Men characters grow up as it served as the prequel to the original 2000 film. Logan is set in 2029,where he has crawled into a whiskey bottle and has never come back out. With the exception of driving a limousine for cash around town, he's old, mean and his body is starting to fail him. When he’s driving people around or killing them, he takes care of Professor X, who is suffering from dementia and lives in a rusted out, abandoned water tower. Life is not good for anyone.
Meanwhile, a little girl named Laura crosses paths with Logan, who seems to have the same abilities as him. Logan is now charged with the task of transporting this girl to a safe haven with Charles in tow,as a group of bad guys are after her, led by Doctor Zander Rice.
It’s a straight forward story that takes it’s time setting up these older, dying characters as well as new ones. James Mangold certainly was influenced by some of his favorite old western films, as it can be seen in some of the cinematography, which are just fantastic. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart give award worthy performances, which might bring a tear or two down your face. It's that good, newcomer Dafne Keen as Laura was also fantastic and very believable at being one of the youngest mutants.
Overall, LOGAN is a perfect comic book/movie adaptation, that is heartbreaking as well as visually stunning.
Mangold and Jackman create a special film with that and a something that will be talked about from years to come. Believe the hype, LOGAN is a serious, amazing Marvel comic book film that may just be the best in the franchise that embodies the definition of a perfect adaptation.
