The smell of crispy garlic soy Korean fried chicken filled your small apartment, a warm and comforting contrast to the cold rain tapping against the windowpane.
Martin had arrived twenty minutes ago, wearing a oversized black hoodie, a thick beanie pulled low over his forehead, and a mask that had barely hidden the exhaustion in his eyes. But the moment the door locked behind him, the idol facade evaporated. The tension drained from his shoulders, leaving behind just Martin the boy who stole extra pickled radishes from the bag, who laughed until his cheeks turned pink, and who looked at you like you were the center of his universe.
Now, the empty takeout containers sat on the coffee table. Martin was sprawled across your sofa, his head resting heavily in your lap while his long legs draped over the armrest. One of his hands rested gently over your knee, his fingers casually tracing light patterns against your jeans.
You combed your fingers through his soft hair, your thumb gently caressing the warm skin of his neck, right where his pulse fluttered steadily. He let out a soft, contented sigh, his eyes fluttering shut as he melted into your touch.
"I missed this," he murmured, his voice thick with sleepiness. "I missed you. The practice room was hell today, Y/N. The choreo for the new comeback is insane."
"I know, baby," you whispered, smiling softly as you nudged a stray hair from his forehead. "You’ve been working so hard. I saw the teaser photos this morning. You look incredible."
"I only care if you think I look good," he muttered, a lazy, dimpled smile tugging at his lips. He turned his face into your stomach, breathing you in. "You're my safe space, Y/N. Seriously. Out there, everything is so loud... but here, with you, it’s quiet."
You kept your hand moving against his neck, but a quiet, sharp ache bloomed in your chest. You loved him. You loved him so fiercely it terrified you sometimes. You were endlessly proud of him proud of every late night he spent in the studio, every goal he smashed with CORTIS, every dream he was actively bringing to life. He belonged on a stage, shining bright for the world to see.
But nights like this were so rare. The secret rendezvous, the constant fear of being caught, the hidden glances, the looming threat of his agency finding out it weighed heavily on your shoulders.
Without thinking, the thought escaped your lips in a quiet, fragile whisper.
"I wish you weren't an idol sometimes..."
The atmosphere in the room instantly shifted.
Martin’s breathing paused. The lazy smile vanished from his face, replaced by a sudden, rigid stillness. He slowly opened his eyes, tilting his head up to meet your gaze.
"What?" he asked softly, his voice stripped of all its playful warmth.
Panicking slightly, you tried to smooth it over, your hand still trembling against his skin. "I-I didn't mean it like that, Martin. You know I'm so proud of you. I love seeing you follow your dreams, I really do. It's just... sometimes I wish we were normal. I wish I could hold your hand in public. I wish I didn't have to worry every time a car lingers outside my building."
Martin sat up quickly, turning on the couch to face you fully. The exhaustion in his eyes was replaced by a raw, desperate fear that made your heart drop.
"Y/N, look at me," he pleaded, reaching out to grasp both of your hands in his. His grip was firm, almost tight, as if he were afraid you were going to slip away right then and there. "Don't say that. Please."
"Martin-"
"No, Y/N, listen to me," he cut in, his voice cracking slightly. "I know this is hard. I know hiding sucks, and I hate that I have to hide the person I love most in this entire world. But don't talk like you're letting go. You are my anchor. You're the only thing that keeps me grounded when everything else feels like it's spinning out of control. If I lose you, none of this the music, CORTIS, the fame none of it means a damn thing."
"I'm not leaving you," you whispered, tears prickling at the corners of your eyes. "I just worry."
"I won't let anything happen to us," he promised fiercely, pressing his forehead against yours so he could look directly into your eyes. "The guys know about us, and they've got our backs. Juhoon literally distracted our manager tonight so I could slip out the back door. I will protect you from the company. I'll protect you from the sasaengs. I don't care if I have to risk my entire career I will never lose you, Y/N. I can't."
Before you could reply, a harsh, metallic buzzing of Martin’s phone shattered the heavy silence in the room.
He snatched it off the coffee table, his eyes darting frantically across the screen. You held your breath, watching the blood drain from his face before a flicker of pure panic crossed his features.
James: MARTIN. GET YOUR ASS BACK HERE NOW.
James: Manager hyung just randomly showed up at the dorm. He wants to hold an emergency meeting in the living room.
Keonho: We lied and told him you’re in the shower right now to buy you time, but you know how hyung is. He’s already asking why the shower’s been running for twenty minutes. You need to get out of her apartment IMMEDIATELY.
Martin let out a ragged breath, running a hand through his hair. The immediate danger of being caught right at your doorstep wasn't knocking yet, but the clock was ticking, loud and relentless.
"I have to go," he whispered, turning back to look at you. The sudden rush of reality felt like cold water thrown over both of your heads.
"Go, go! What are you doing still sitting here?" You scrambled off the sofa, grabbing his heavy coat from the back of the chair and shoving it into his hands. "If he finds out you snuck out to see me, they’ll put a twenty-four-hour watch on you. He'll take your phone, Martin!"
"Y/N, wait-"
"No, Martin, don't wait!" Your hands were shaking as you helped him pull his arms through the sleeves of his oversized hoodie. "James and Keonho are taking a massive risk lying for you right now. If your manager walks into that bathroom and sees an empty shower, it’s over."
Martin grabbed your wrist, pulling you firmly against his chest before you could usher him toward the door. The coat fell to the floor between you. He wrapped his arms tightly around your waist, burying his face into the crook of your neck, breathing you in like a drowning man trying to catch one last lungful of air.
"I hate this," he choked out, his voice muffled against your skin. "I hate having to run from you like I’m doing something wrong. I just want to stay here. I just want to stay with you."
Your heart shattered into a million pieces. The pain in his voice was raw, almost unbearable. You wrapped your arms around his shoulders, holding him back just as fiercely, resting your cheek against his.
"I know, baby. I know," you whispered, fighting back the tears burning behind your eyes for his sake. "I love you so much. But you have to protect yourself right now. We'll have other nights, okay? Just go."
"I'm not letting them ruin us," he said fiercely, pulling back just enough to frame your face with his hands. His eyes were burning with an intense, desperate pledge. "I mean what I said before, Y/N. I’m doing everything I can to keep this secret to protect you from the media and the fans... but if the company ever tries to make me choose between this career and you? I will drop everything. I will walk away."
"Martin..."
"I'm serious," he insisted, his voice cracking with emotion. "You're my other half. You're the only person who keeps me sane in this insane world. I can't lose you. I won't lose you."
He leaned in and kissed you hard, desperate, and full of an aching devotion that left you breathless. It was a promise, a plea, and a reassurance all at once.
When he finally pulled away, he grabbed his beanie and mask, pulling them back on until only his soft, worried eyes were visible.
"Call me the second you get back to the dorm safely," you begged, opening the door just a crack to check the silent hallway. "Be careful down the stairs. Make sure nobody's watching."
"I will," he whispered. He squeezed your hand one last time, a tight, lingering hold before forcing himself to let go. "I love you, Y/N."
"I love you too."
You watched his hooded figure disappear down the dark stairwell, slipping into the shadows like a ghost. Closing the door softly, you locked it, resting your back against the cold wood as the quiet apartment suddenly felt agonizingly empty. All that was left was the faint scent of his cologne, the leftover chicken on the table, and the terrifying prayer in your heart that he'd make it back before the bathroom door opened.

.✦ ݁˖ summary – you move to korea with your parents, abandoning everything you knew back home. the cultural shock makes it difficult for you to adjust, especially since you barely speak korean. apparently, most people mind their business here. you also don’t know much about kpop, nor kdrama, so finding like-minded people that way is also impossible. in search of comfort, or maybe even a friend, you decide to text both your number neighbours. they don’t reply after many texts, so you’d gotten into the habit of sending one of them to-do lists, grocery shopping lists, and random thoughts. but what happens when one neighbour replies, and the other starts to do the same?

gigi notes𝄞 Hai angels! Yes WE self insert our interests into fics😂👌 Code geass and arctic monkeys is peak. Sooo I DID in fact plan for this point of the plot to have a written section, just not quite this long. So sorry about that, I just got carried away. Also, thank you so much for 50 followers! I've only had my blog for a week, so I'm super honored. Enjoy!!🤍 (wc 1.8k)
You sit at your vanity, tossing your hair back and forth, hoping you look good enough to impress Juhoon. You haven't spent much time with him, let alone one on one, and you dont want to mess up your shot. Was he being dry with you? Yes. But you assume that's just... how he is. He isn't exactly Mr. Popular, and thats what you like about him. He's different from Martin and his other friends, and you're glad he is. Martin is one of the most obnoxious people you know. Even if he is nice to you most of the time, he can be pretty clingy when you guys are together. Not that you
mind, necessarily. You've been friends for years, and you'v had your fair share of being clingy with him, too. What irks you is the fact that he still acted that way even when he had a girlfriend in the past. You were actually the reason they broke up. His ex said something about him being TOO close to you, in a way a friend shouldn't be. You didn't see it though, he joked around too much and treated you too much like a guy for there to be any actual... feelings involved. So you consoled him after the break up, being the good friend you are, and that was that. No mention of any possible feelings between you two, and you hoped it would never be brought up again. When you two first became friends, you thought he was really cute. Shortly after you had been accustomed to his lifestyle, and how he treated you like a brother, not even a sister, you pushed those feelings down immediately. You hadn't actually crushed on someone the way you are with Juhoon since Martin. Sure, you've talked to a few guys here and there, but you never stayed with a guy long enough to reach girlfriend status. To them, you were always too friendly, too loud, too nice, to be considered girl friend material. How that even makes sense, you'll never know. Your friends constantly tell you that it really isn't you, and that you just keep accidentally choosing the wrong guys, but sometimes you wonder if there will really ever be anyone who stays long enough to like you for you. *Knock Knock* you hear someone at your door, interrupting your thoughts as you shoot up from your bed. You rush to the door, and standing there, looking so cute and effortless and absolutely perfect, is Juhoon.
"Hi" he gives you a slight wave and a gentle smile. While he looks effortless at first glance, he is a jumble of nerves inside. "What do I even say. I've never hung out with a girl. Is this weird? Does she think I'm weird for asking to study today? Was it too soon? What if she only sees me as a friend? My hands are getting sweaty oh no this is so embarrassing-" "Come on in!" You greet him warmly, extending your arm dramatically towards your living room. "It's not quite unpacked just yet, so excuse any mess that's lying around. And if you see a cat wandering around anywhere, feel free to play with her! She's super friendly," you grin, sitting at the table. "Just like you," Juhoon mumbles, just quiet enough for it to go unnoticed. "So, what unit are you one?" he asks, opening his laptop. "Unit 3. Honestly, I'm a bit lost. At the end of this unit, I have to write an ultra long essay that I am NOT excited about, because I hardly know the difference between the three branches of government," you sigh, slowly melting into your chair as you reluctantly open your laptop. "Ahhh, ok, I see. Well, let's start from the beginning then. I'll help you review the topics from Units 1 and 2, so you can go onto Unit 3 understanding what to do. Sound good?" he says, tilting his head and smiling, his glasses falling a bit down the bridge of his nose. "Uhh yeah! Thank you so much again, I really don't know what I would've done if you hadn't offered to help," you say, quickly looking away from him and at your laptop. The way he tilted his head and looked at you, you were afraid of looking at him for too long, like if you did he would disappear, or run away. "Of course, y/n. It really is no big deal, I like helping my friends out when I can," he says the last part quietly, averting his attention to his laptop. "I'll email you a few things for you to review. Then, I'll go over the questions with you and quiz you. While you do that, I'm gonna do my homework," you nod your head. Those are the last words spoken between the two of you for the next half hour. The silence is unnerving to you. You've never been one for silence. You always need something in the background; people, music, a youtube video just SOMETHING.
"So...uh... what music do you like," you ask, your voice barely above a whisper, not wanting to disturb his peace. "Sorry," he peaks out from his laptop, "Could you repeat that?" Your face gets hot. There's no way you whispered that. Now you're embarrassed and nervous. "Uhm... I asked, what music do you like? Im sorry, it's hard for me to work in complete silence. Could I play some music?" "Oh, yeah. I mean, it is your house, you don't need my permission. I like working with music, too. I'd have to say my favorite artist is Daniel Caesar, but I also really like indie rock," he says, a pause between his words like he's really thinking about his answer. "Oh my gosh, I love both of those! Indie rock is one of my favorite genres. I really like alternative, too. More specifically 90s indie and alt rock. Like, I love Oasis and Sonic Youth, but recently I've really been on Arctic Monkeys..." your voice trails off, realizing you've been rambling for too long as you lock eyes with Juhoon. "Sorry," you blush. "I just really like music. It's my lifeline," you laugh lightly, hoping he wasn't annoyed with you. "Don't apologize, y/n, I like hearing you talk." Your blush becomes an even deeper red as you turn to your tv, opening up youtube to play music. "So, uh, Arctic Monkeys. There's this one song that I've been listening to all the time, sooo I hope you like it. It's like, super duper niche, so I bet you don't even know it," you say, playing Mardy Bum by Arctic Monkeys. "This is my favorite album of theirs, but I never really see anyone talking about it. Riot Van is also a really good song even though it's pretty short. Those songs are always the best," you sigh, turning back to your evil history work.
"What else do you like?" you ask casually, hoping you can get to know him more. "Oh, me? Uhh... I like anime... Fruits Basket, Code Geass, Naruto, stuff like that," he replies shyly. "YOU LIKE SHOUJO TOO???" you exclaim, immediately excited. You two have much more in common than you had hoped. "You like anime too? I honestly wouldn't have guessed that," he chuckles, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yes, I absolutely love it. There's actually one that just came out, Ramparts of Ice, and it's so good. I had to read the manga through a random website, though. I can't find the physical english manga anywhere," you sigh. "Actually, I collect shoujo mangas... I have a few figures from fruits basket. I could help you find that manga, I know a few sites," he says. "That would be so amazing omgosh," you babble. If you couldn't get any more obsessed with him, you definitely were now. Suddenly, you hear a knock at the front door. "Sorry, just a second. It's probably my mom," you explain, darting towards the door. "Hi, Sweetie! I have groceries, could you help me out?" Your mom asks kindly. "Yes, of course. One thing though..." you say, glancing over at Juhoon to make sure h can't hear you. "Remember the Kim's son? He's... kinda here right now, helping me study. Please please please don't make it awkward, we're just friends," you plead silently as your mom looks over to Juhoon and gives you a knowing grin. "Friends..." she mumbles, then bursts through the door. "Juhoon! Wow, it's so good to see you! Thank you for tutoring my y/n, that is so kind of you. In fact, since you're here, why don't you stay for dinner, as a thank you from our family?" She smiles, placing the groceries in the kitchen. "Oh I couldn't, I don't want to overstay-" "It really is no problem at all! You're such a pleasant guest, nothing like that Martin kid y/n always has over. Such a messy kid, but kind nonetheless." "I mean, if you insist, and as long as y/n is ok with it," he turns to you and gives you a lazy grin. You feel your heart melt just a little more than it already had, and you feel your body get warm. "Yes of course it's ok. Plus, I'm almost done with my work, so I'm hungry. If only I could get hot pot..." you reply. About 20 minutes later, your mom whips up a quick dinner. Your brothers burst through the front door with your dad trailing behind them. "Y/n! Is this your boyfriend? The neighbor kid?" Your youngest brother yells, and the two burst into laughter, chanting "Y/n has a boyfriend!" "Omgosh stop! He's not my boyfriend..." you murmur. "Just sit down. We're gonna eat dinner AND we've been waiting on you AND I'm hungry," you huff, crossing your arms and glaring at them. They know that's their cue to listen, and they immediately sit down at the table. The dinner, surprisingly, goes smoothly with hardly any comments from your family.
When dinner is done, Juhoon silently gets up to do the dishes. "Ju, you don't need to do the dishes! You're our guest, please don't feel obligated," you say. He slowly looks over at you, tilting his head once again. "What'd you just call me?" A slowly smile creeping over his face. "Uhm... Ju? I don't know, it kinda just came out naturally. It seemed like a fitting nickname..." your voice trails off. "It's ok. I liked it. Ju... I don't know why nobody has ever called me that," he replies, smiling to himself as he finishes the dishes. "I should head home now. It's getting late," he says, grabbing his bag. "Today was really fun though. When you need help with that essay, or anything else, let me know and I'll walk over." "Ok! Sounds good. Thank you again," you reply, walking him to the door. "I'll see you later...y/nnie" he gives you a wave and turns towards his house. Did he just give YOU a nickname? "Y/nnie..." you think, "well it does have a ring to it."
