The TikTok trend of cord cutting with two candles is originally a form of divination. I will illustrate how to do this in simple steps. I typed this out in Google docs before posting it here, so if the layout is uncomfortable I apologize.
Music to focus if preferred
Create sigils to represent yourself and the person with whom you wish to ascertain your relationship strength. Carve one sigil into each candle, and seal them to a burn safe surface with a bit of wax, or put them in candle holders about 6 inches apart.
Next you will tie a cord to both candles, taught across the space between the candles, but not so tight as to make them lean towards each other. Decorate the space with herbs, crystals, and any epithets to deities that feel appropriate to you. This is a divination ritual, so having a clear, open mind is paramount. Light both candles at the same time.
As the candles burn, shuffle your tarot cards, awaken them and attune them to the ritual you are conducting. This will help convey what you’re searching for when the reading takes place. Keep an eye on the candles. You will want to watch as the cord between them burns. Feel free to film that part specifically to interpret the cord burning several times.
I interpret candle burnings thusly:
Whichever candle lends fire to the cord first is putting the most energy behind it. If the cord burns on one side the energy is being used to maintain the connection. If the cord breaks quickly, the opposite is true.
If the flame is generally even on both sides and the center breaks, the connection is ready to be severed on both sides. The side that stays intact the longest is the side wanting the cord to stay untouched.
While waiting for the candles to burn down, answer the following questions, either in your head or in a journal or grimoire. Be sure to acknowledge your initial reaction to all the questions and think about why you feel that way. It’s important to let whatever emotions you have pass through you without judgement during this ceremony.
What, if any convictions do you have for making amends with *****? If I remove all external factors, including how ***** feels, what do I want?
Reflect on the mistreatment that occurred. Is there any way to forgive ***** of that? Would you feel freed by absolving ***** of blame, or is there a bitter taste in your mouth about letting the past go and keeping ***** present and moving forward?
Once the cord is cut, are you willing to leave it severed, to be silent and removed from ***** for the rest of your life? Consider ***** in the hospital, unwell and asking for you. Imagine them calling. Imagine them arriving to your home with a gift and a sincere apology. Can you turn them away even then?
Are you ready to move forward feeling indifference toward *****, whether they live or die, are happy or unhappy, would choose this or fight against the severance? Are you ready to reject any future crossings of your paths?
These questions are meant to be hard, and if you have a hard time answering any of them with certainty, I suggest pausing the ritual and meditating further. If not, keep an eye on the candles, it’s time for the tarot drawing.
Draw five cards and place them as if on the points of a star. The cards should be face down. Draw a five point star. This can be done with your finger in the air above the cards, or on a piece of paper. Each stroke should be treated as an arrow guiding towards the point you are drawing towards. Starting at the pinnacle of the star, read and interpret your tarot cards. In this reading you are trying to gauge just how strong the connection between you and ***** is, as well as what factors could be contributing to it.
By the time you are done with this reading, the candles should have done their work and possibly burned all the way. Compare the interpretation of the burning cord you witness with the tarot reading. With these divinations, if you are still comfortable completing the ritual, do so. Move forward unshackled from uncertainty either way. Blessings and bounty.
