While we were working on improving the ICIMOD headquarters’ landscape back in 2018, we could not ignore the presence of an ugly structure towards the entry serving its sole purpose of connection to the underground parking.Former DG David Molden requested us to come up with an appropriate design that would rather enhance the new landscape.
Building on to the architectural language we had carefully developed with our copper clad welcome pavilion sharing the same central axis as it, we were keen to use a light structure with roof in copper. This hybrid multi-functional node serves as a drop off for public visitors, protects the ICIMOD community and other users while its integrated Sal wood timber seating makes for a great spot for conversations /lunch or to simply marvel at the compound’s landscape. The three stepped butterfly roof clad in copper, which follows the inclination of the steps below, adds elegance to this transparent connection and doubles up as a water harvesting feature during monsoon.
