I marathoned the six Star Wars films during the weekend, rewatching the prequels, watching the originals for the first time, but I left my opinion post for when I watched episode VII, which I did today ^^ (Iām turning this into a tradition btw, going to the cinema on christmas eve morning :) Last year it was the hobbit) So alright, opinions under the cut, because of spoilers for VII, but also because I have a few unpopular opinions about some of the others and somehow I feel like this is the kind of fandom where unpopular opinions magically summon angry mobs with pitchforks and lightsabers right to your doorstep :P
I liked this one when I first watched it as a kid and I still like it when I rewatched it now :) Some things now I can appreciate differently than I remembered, like for example the fact that the story is a little dull for an action film (which personally I still love anyway, because hell yeah for exploring the worldbuilding in sci-fi and fantasy stories, but I can understand why some people disliked it in this particular franchise), and jar jar, who I used to like when I was a kid, is actually quite annoying and not really that efficient as comedy relief unless youāre a kid tbh :P I liked mini!Ani even more than I liked him when I was a kid, and the race scene was still cool as hell, and a little reminiscent of video games which I loved :) I was completely in love with Padme when I first watched the films, and now I loved her even more if thatās even possible, because what an amazing badass and intelligent queen and leader and you go bby you rock that possition of power *hearteyes* Also the scenery is A+
Episode II AKA Holy Forced Heteronormativity Batman
Okay, eerrrrmmm, what a turd :P I used to like this one, even if it was my least fave from the three prequels, I still thought it was cool... But oh boy... Iām always amazed by this societyās power to make you grow up overappreciating mediocre white dudes, because holy shit, I actually used to think that Hayden Fishfacen made a really good jobĀæ? Heās such an annoying whiny brat throughout the whole film, but not in aĀ āAnakin is supposed to be an annoying whiny brat in this film and heās doing a great portrayal of thatā kinda way, but more like āAnakin is an annoying brat but you too Hayden what the hell shut upĀæ? Why is your face doing thatĀæ? Stop.ā Which is of course not terribly good for an actor to make you feel :P Also the heteronormativity, eewwwwww, completely forced and unnatural, even less chemistry than in a club of snobbish literature academics whoāre bitter and condescending about science :P The pacing and story was also all over the place tbh. There were still a couple of good things I can apreciate though: The droids of course are perf as usual, the scene where they fight against those creatures in the arena is still super cool, and ALL THAT TIME THEY SPEND ON NABOO HOLY SHIT. I WANT A THREE HOUR LONG DOCUMMENTARY JUST WALKING AROUND THE STREETS OF NABOO AND SHOWING ALL ITS ARCHITECTURE AND CULTURE AND HISTORY PLEASE AND THANK ITāS THE MOST GORGEOUS THING EVER :D
I really used to love this one and I STILL FUCKING LOVE IT :D Tbh a tie between this one and ep VI for my favourite of the franchise :D Hayden Fishfacen actually does a decent enough job for most of this one tbh, only a few times does he make me feel the usual awkwardness and second hand embarrasment, and all the scenes where heās turning into Darth Vader, after Palpatine has baptised him as such, are just bloody superb tbh :D I do have a complaint about this one though, and itās that my dear bby badass Padme spends the whole of it literally just sitting down being pregnant and worrying about Anakin. Thatās it, thatās her role. Because everybody knows that once you get pregnant you stop being a person and simply become a walking incubator. A sitting incubator in this case. At least in the original script there was a political subplot for her to make her role more interesting, but even that was deleted in the edition process, so whatever, not even that, just a whole film of sad sighs and uneventful pregnancy until it is her turn to die for manpain.
This one is okay, itās enjoyable, and itās likeĀ āyay Iām watching Star Wars which is such a meaningful nerd thing!ā, but as a film on its own it falls a little flat and tends to fail a little at making me emotionally invested tbh? :/ Like, the story is good, and the worldbuilding is good, and BOY DO I LOVE THAT LEIA IS SET UP AS A POOR DAMSELL IN DISTRESS AND COMPLETELY TURNS THAT ON ITS HEAD :D But all the emotional beats of the film felt a little lacklustreĀæ? Like:
āYour whole life and all the family youāve ever known and your home have just been burned to the ground, with only a couple of charred skeletons left for showā And they donāt even show Lukeās grief for a secondĀæ? Heās like,Ā āoh, okay, that sucks. Welp, I guess Iāll just go with this old dude then, thereās nothing for me here anyway, meeeeh, who cares, look at all the grief Iām not really shown feeling, at allā
āYour home planet and all its millions/billions of inhabitants have just been destroyed forever. This is a completely horrifying act that really establishes what horrible villains we areā But we never see anything of Alderaan, or of Leiaās relationship with anyone there, or even a simple reaction shot from LeiaĀæ? Itās just likeĀ ālook at this blue ball here, now we press a button, whoops itās gone, letās move onā. So, I mean, objectively speaking the destruction of a planet is a horrible thing, but nothing in this scene shows the gravity of the act or why weāre supposed to careĀæ?
In honest trailers they describe the fight between Obi Wan and Vader asĀ ātwo old geezers gently pok[ing] at each otherā and tbh yeahĀæ? and the dialogue has no gravitas either, so Obi Wanās death is just kinda dullĀæ? For a satisfying emotionally charged fight between Obi Wan and Anakin I much prefer the one in ep III tbh *ducks to avoid the flying tomatoes*
Also I had no idea the Death Star was destroyed in the first film, I thought it was the main enemy through the whole trilogy :P
This is the one that actually got me emotionally engaged with the originals :D The story gets a little slow around the middle, but who cares, because I love it anyway, and the characters are great :D Ā I really fucking love Yoda playing the part of the senile crazy old fuck at first, one of the most hilarious things ever XD And the emotional weight of Darth Vaderās reveal is fucking great, the scene where Luke is hanging from that antenna and waiting for Leia to come back is one of the most heartbreaking things ever.
Hello, yes, Iād like to declare that Ewoks are the most adorable little balls of beligerence in the whole universe :D Apart from the whole thing with Jabba the hut, which personally I found slightly boring, Iād also like to reiterate that this is one of my two favourite films on the saga :D Itās perfect, I love that so much of it takes place on a planet, which is great for more worldbuilding, and one as entertaining as the one with the Ewoks ^^ Also, I had no idea Anakin got redeemedĀæ? I wasnāt expecting that, I always thought Darth Vader died a villain, but all the father-son scenes were bloody beautiful, and a very pleasant surprise ;u; And Iām always a sucker for Anakin angst tbh :P I always found it annoying that the jedi kept insisting that repressing your feelings and turning a blind eye to them is the way to virtue, because if thereāsĀ one thing Iāve learnt in therapy to deal with all my anxiety and depression, itās that feelings need to be acknowledged, and I need to allow myself to feel them and not feel guilty about negative emotions, because theyāre normal and a fundamental part of a balanced emotional health, and constantly bottling them up just drives you crazy and makes you get worse. So Luke allowing himself to feel all the negative things, and still dealing with them in a healthy way and coming out of it even more strongly in the light side, was a real breath of fresh air and beautiful to watch ;u;
I LOVED IT IT WAS GREAT :D :D :D :D :D :D The experience of getting to watch it on the cinema was nice (also because the Stucky trailer in cinema quality came included in that experience ;u;), and just the emotion of being part of it already had me crying in the crawling text intro :P The plot was kinda completely recycled from the original trilogy tbh, but who cares, it was still cool as hell :D COMPLETELY PUMPED ABOUT WOMAN AND MOC BEING THE MAIN CHARACTERS AND THE THREE OF THEM BEING ABSOLUTELY GREAT :D And I loved how they mashed so well all the old elements with the new ^^ Hanās death was horrible and absolutely heartbreaking, and even though it was quite predictable, because you canāt have your villain turning good so early in the game (and also because I had already been spoiled about it :P), it was tremendously emotionally relevant, and it had a great dignity to it, it was beautiful and heartbreaking. Leia was awesome as usual, and I love that Luke didnāt have a single line in the whole film, and yet his presence was so important, and the meeting with Rey so poignant ;u; Also Chewie and all the droids are the bestest :D One thing I didnāt see though, and that I was disappointed to not see, was the great love story between Finn and PoeĀæ? From how much it has been hyped and how excited people were about how the movie presented it, tbh I was expecting a lot moreĀæ? Iād heard people talking about how the movie puts tons of romantic subtext between Finn and Poe and didnāt do that between Rey and Finn, and tbh thatās not really the way I saw itĀæ? I came out of the film appreciating all the relationships between the three of them as simply platonic, and I got the impression that the film and the narrative itself actually did more to set up the base for a possible future romance between Rey and Finn than it ever did for Poe and FinnĀæ? Not that I wouldnāt love it if they went that way, but tbh I didnāt see anywhere any indication of intentional subtext of that kindĀæ? What I saw just reads as good platonic friends to me tbh :/ Iād like to be wrong here but Iām actually surprised that this was what I saw after having seen everybody elseās super enthusiastic reactions about this supposed romance :/ Anyway, the platonic intimacy that they did develop and the rest of the film were superb so whatever, still loved it :D
