Reliable guidance, and the possibility of checking as we go, are the indispensable conditions for getting anywhere.
The Absorbent Mind, p.248 Maria Montessori
What matters is not so much correction in itself as that each individual should become aware of their own errors.
The Absorbent Mind, p.247 Maria Montessori
So it is well to cultivate a friendly feeling towards error, to treat it as a companion inseparable from our lives, as something having a purpose, which it truly has.

The control of error guides the child in his use of the materials and permits [them] to recognize [their] own mistakes. [...] This dialogue with the materials puts the child in control of the learning process.

Early Childhood - Nomenclature Cards
Montessori Nomenclature cards (from the Latin nomenclatura β "assigning of names") are often used for building vocabulary and concepts in all subject areas. Also known as 3-part cards, this material is made up of pictures and labels. One card, the control card, has the picture and the name of the subject, and each of the other 2 cards have either the picture or the name. The student finds the matching picture and name. By using the control card, children are able to self-correct and work independently without guidance from the Montessori teacher.
Early Childhood - Spindle Boxes
The Spindle Boxes are a Montessori math material that introduces counting with tangible wooden spindles.Β
The spindles themselves are wooden rods with no markings or coloring on them. A child carefully arranges the two boxes on a table, and begins counting! One spindle in the one compartment, two spindles in the two compartment, and so on.
A natural control of error occurs when a child finishes counting. If there are too few or too many spindles, the child knows he or she has made an error somewhere along the way.
The child isnβt dependent on a teacher for confirmation that he or she has done the work correctly. Itβs just another way that independence is fostered in the Montessori classroom.
